  • A space launch vehicle is a very complex system composed of many kinds of components. It is necessary for even a small piece of components in it to be free of defects, malfunctions and to operate normally for the sake of the mission success. For these reasous, a variety of tests are carried out. Burn-in test is to detect latent material and workmanship defects which occurs early in the components use. Developed countries for the space technology have considered the burn-in test for flight vehicles in the standard test documents and performed it. Referred to the documents, application methods of burn-in test will be considered for the components of domestic space launch vehicles such as KSLV-I in this document.

  • In this paper, we analyzed linkbudget with comparing actual received level of telemetry system at Palau Tracking Station. Because Palau Tracking Station participated in the launch mission for the first time and lack of verification tests for antenna tracking and signal reception performance, we analyzed the linkbudget more accurately by predicting transmit antenna polarization gain according to the trajectory and attitude of launch vehicle. The analysis results were used to analyze signal reception range, antenna operation angle and LHCP/RHCP received level. The actual received level of the antenna was similar to the linkbudget result as a result of the launch mission operation.

  • The fairing of the launch vehicles has a role of protecting the spacecraft from outer thermal, acoustical, and mechanical loads during flight. Among them, the thermal load is analyzed in the present study. The ascent thermal analyses include aerodynamic heating rate on every point of the fairing, heat transfer through the fairing and spacecraft, and the final temperature during ascent flight phase. A design code based on theoretical/experimental database is applied to calculate the aerodynamic heating rate, and a thermal math program, SINDA/Fluint, is considered for conductive heat transfer of the fairing. The results show that the present design satisfies the allowing temperature of the structure. Another important thermal problem, pyro explosive fairing separation device, is calculated because the pyro system is very sensitive to the temperature. The results also satisfies the pyro thermal condition.

  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the launch dynamics and thermo-fluid phenomena for gas generator launch eject system. The existing gas dynamic model for launching eject body used ideal gas and adiabatic assumption with empirical energy loss model. In present study, a turbulent Navier-Stokes solver with CHIMERA mesh is employed to predict the detail unsteady thermo-fluid dynamics for the launched body. The calculation results show that proper grid number is necessary for good agreement with experimental data. The important effects for accurate prediction are a gap distance and thermal boundary condition on the wall. The computational results show good agreement with experiment data.

  • If the flow of booster gas which is exhausted to the rear part of a canister is properly restricted in the canister of a hot-launch system, the resultant pressure built up in the canister provides additional force to accelerate the missile to a required launch velocity. These thrust augmentation performances can be controlled through the configuration design of baseplate orifices. In this paper, the simple technique to analyze the thrust augmentation performances of baseplate orifices is suggested and the thrust augmentation characteristics by its various configurations are compared. According to the initial displacement of a missile, the inner pressure of a canister is measured from scaled cold flow tests, and the discharge coefficient of baseplate orifices is calculated. Then the thrust augmentation in a canister is simulated by applying these discharge characteristics to the AMESIM software for launch dynamics.

  • The intended system's function and performance can be assured through implementing the development process, the verification compliance against corresponding requirements, in accordance with the fundamental principle from the Systems Engineering. For the effective verification implementation, related core metadata should be selected and managed throughout the development life cycle. And these have to be included in the configuration document such as specification so that taking them as development baselines each phases if necessary. In this paper, associated case study results are introduced to establish the Requirements Verification Matrix (RVM) for the verification management on the space launch vehicle development program.

  • The satellite experiences the launch environment such as vibration, acceleration, shock induced by rocket and the orbit environment such as high vacuum, no gravity, high temperature and cryogenic. Therefore, the satellite should be designed and manufactured to endure such environments. Also, special care must be taken on the assembly of parts and subsystem. Finally, we describe the environment test of microsatellite to ensure the reliable operation during launch period as well as in-orbit operation.

  • In this paper, the development results of electromechanical TVC actuation system is described in the aspect of design, analysis, manufacturing and test. The kinds of prime power for TVC actuation system is classified by the variety of propulsion system of launch vehicle. The electric power by battery is the sole candidate for prime power of TVC actuation system at the view point of feasible domestic infra technologies for the present. The characteristic analysis study is performed between electromechanical and electrohydraulic actuation system with respect to power efficiency, performance and weight efficiency. The electromechanical actuation system has superiority of power and weight efficiency according to less opportunity of power conversion process.

  • This paper describes the operational concept of the Aegis ship's missile defense. Recently, North Korea conducted a fourth nuclear-weapon test that involved the launch of a long-range missile and the underwater launch of an SLBM. The ground-based BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense) system is very limited for the SLBM of a miniaturized nuclear warhead; therefore, it is necessary to build a reliable sea-based missile-defense system. The ROK Navy has, however, only utilized the Aegis ship that is designed with a search-and-tracking sensor but is without a ballistic-missile interception capability. Given this information, this work focuses on the operational concept of the Aegis BMD by comparing the BMD capabilities of the ROK with those of the U.S.

  • This paper presents results of dynamic analysis of the missile initial motion arising from the missile detent force. Using ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical System) software, a non-linear 46-DOF (Degree of Freedom) model is developed for the launcher system including missile and launch tube contact problem. From the dynamic analysis, it is found that initial angular velocity of the missile increases when the missile detent force increases (more than 18 g) and also rocket exhaust plume is taken into account. To achieve the missile launching s ability, it needs to reduce the missile initial detent force and exhaust plume area of the launcher. Results of the dynamic analysis on the system natural frequency agree well with those obtained from experimental modal tests. The overall results suggest that the proposed method is a useful tool for prediction of initial missile stability as well as d :sign of the missile launcher system.
