Running characteristics of rubber-tired AGT light rail vehicle (고무차륜 AGT 경량전철 차량의 주행특성 해석)

  • Dynamic model of the Korea standardized rubber-tired AGT light rail vehicle, and boundary conditions between vehicle and infrastructures (running track, guidance rail) were defined to analyze vehicular vibration behaviors occurred at the worst condition for straight running track. Using the commercialized software RecurDyn, resultant forces and vibration accelerations of car body and bogies were analyzed. Based on the Korea performance test criteria for urban transit, vertical and lateral vibration of car body were calculated and evaluated as wearing condition of guide wheels. And resultant forces between bogie guidance frame and guide rail in straight running track were analyzed. As the results, the Korea standardized rubber-tired AGT light rail vehicle satisfied the performance criteria and design requirement .

Investigation of fresh concrete behavior under vibration using mass-spring model

  • This paper deals with the behavior of fresh concrete that is under vibration using mass-spring model (MSM). To this end, behaviors of two different full scale precast concrete molds were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were performed under vibration with the use of a computer-based data acquisition system. Transducers were used to measure time-dependent lateral displacements at some points on mold while mold is empty and full of fresh concrete. Analytical modeling of molds used in experiments were prepared by three dimensional finite element method (3D FEM) using software. Modeling of full mold, using MSM, was made to solve the problem of dynamic interaction between fresh concrete and mold. Numerical displacement histories obtained from time history analysis were compared with experimental results. The comparisons show that the measured and computed results are compatible.

  • The spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive can be modeled as a rotor-bearing system supported by the base plate. Ball bearing is the crucial element to determine the stiffness of the spindle motor, and its design parameters and operating conditions determine the dynamic characteristics of the spindle motor. In the analysis of a rotor-bearing system with a short shaft like a spindle motor, the stiffness of the base plate as well as ball bearings must be considered accurately to analyze the dynamic charateristics of a spindle motor. In this paper, the lateral and the axial vibration of the spindle motor were analyzed by the transfer matrix method for the dual-shaft rotor-bearing model and by d.o.f lumped parameter model, respectively. The simulation results had good agreements with the experimental modal testing. The dynamic characteristics were fully investigated for the change of the major design parameters of the spindle motor, i.e. the preload of ball bearings and the rotational speed.

Free Vibrations and Buckling of Rectangular Plates with Linearly Varying In-Plane Loading

  • An exact solution procedure is formulated for the free vibration and buckling analysis of rectangular plates having two opposite edges simply supported when these edges are subjected to linearly varying normal stresses. The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.

Nonlinear vibration analysis of a type of tapered cantilever beams by using an analytical approximate method

  • In this paper, an alternative analytical method is presented to evaluate the nonlinear vibration behavior of single and double tapered cantilever beams. The admissible lateral displacement function satisfying the geometric boundary conditions of a single or double tapered cantilever beam is derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method. Based on the Lagrange method and the Newton Harmonic Balance (NHB) method, analytical approximate solutions in closed and explicit form are obtained. These approximate solutions show excellent agreement with those of numeric method for small as well as large amplitude. Moreover, due to brevity of expressions, the present analytical approximate solutions are convenient to investigate effects of various parameters on the large amplitude vibration response of tapered beams.

  • Current seismic design codes for building structures are based on the methods which can provide enough capacity to satisfy objected performance level and exactly evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. Pushover analysis of fast becoming an accepted method for the seismic evaluation of building structures. The popularity of this approximate, nonlinear static analysis method is due to its conceptual simplicity and ability to graphically describe a capacity and demand of structure. However, some of the shortcomings of the pushover analysis, especially for longer period and irregular buildings, is the inability of method to identify failure mechanisms due to effects of higher modes. In this paper proposed lateral load pattern which includes the contribution of higher modes of vibration for irregular building structure and compared to seismic response obtained by time history.

Some aspects of the dynamic cross-wind response of tall industrial chimney

  • The paper is concerned with the numerical study of the cross-wind response of the 295 m-tall six-flue industrial chimney, located in the power station of Belchatow, Poland. The response of the chimney due to turbulent wind flow is caused by the lateral turbulence component and vortex excitation with taking into account motion-induced wind forces. The cross-wind response has been estimated by means of the random vibration approach. Three power spectral density functions suggested by Kaimal, Tieleman and Solari for the evaluation of the lateral turbulence component response are taken into account. The vortex excitation response has been calculated by means of the Vickery and Basu's model including some complements. Motion-induced wind forces acting on a vibrating chimney have been modeled as a nonlinear aerodynamic damping force. The influence of three components mentioned above on the total cross-wind response of the chimney has been investigated. Moreover, the influence of damping ratios, evaluated by Multi-mode Random Decrement Technique, and number of mode shapes of the chimney have been examined. Computer programmes have been developed to obtain responses of the chimney. The numerical results and their comparison are presented.

Analysis on the dynamic characteristics of RAC frame structures

  • The dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are carried out, the rate-dependent mechanical models of RAC are proposed. The dynamic mechanical behaviors of RAC frame structure are investigated by adopting the numerical simulation method of the finite element. It is indicated that the lateral stiffness and the hysteresis loops of RAC frame structure obtained from the numerical simulation agree well with the test results, more so for the numerical simulation which is considered the strain rate effect than for the numerical simulation with strain rate excluded. The natural vibration frequency and the lateral stiffness increase with the increase of the strain rate. The dynamic model of the lateral stiffness is proposed, which is reasonably applied to describe the effect of the strain rate on the lateral stiffness of RAC frame structure. The effect of the strain rate on the structural deformation and capacity of RAC is analyzed. The analyses show that the inter-story drift decreases with the increase of the strain rate. However, with the increasing strain rate, the structural capacity increases. The dynamic models of the base shear coefficient and the overturning moment of RAC frame structure are developed. The dynamic models are important and can be used to evaluate the strength deterioration of RAC structure under dynamic loading.

Vibration Analysis of a Rotor considering Nonlinear Reaction of Hydrodynamic Bearing

  • In this paper it was attempted to treat the hydrodynamic journal bearing as a time-based nonlinear reaction source in each step of rotor rotation in order to observe the bearing effect more realistically and accurately in stead of the conventional method of simple linearized stiffness and damping. Lubrication analysis based on finite element method is employed to calculate the hydrodynamic reaction of bearing and Newmark's method was used to calculate the rotor dynamics in the time domain. Simulation for an industrial electrical motor showed remarkable results with differences compared to those by the conventional method in the dynamic behavior of the rotor.

  • A study on the effects of a high-speed railway bridge vibration induced by moving train on the nearby bridge is performed. Longitudinal and lateral accelerations of slabs and piers which are calculated from moving load analysis of a high-speed railway bridge can be used as input ground motions for the adjacent bridge. Dynamic responses of the adjacent bridge considering soil-structure interaction effects are analyzed by sub-structure method. Analysis procedure is made of free field analysis, calculation of impedance and effective input load and soil-structure system analysis.
