In the 5xxx series Al-Mg alloy, magnesium addition can increase the strength of aluminum alloy by solid solution strengthening but it has a relatively low melting and boiling temperature. During full -penetration laser welding of the Al-Mg alloys, its low boiling point and high vapor pressure brings about the spiky humping bead on the bottom side. Under back-side shielding, the spiking of back bead can be reduced but it restraints the process flexibility. In this study, a square pulse waveform modulation was employed to stabilize keyhole and back bead surface without back-side shielding. By using an experimental design, the bead shapes were evaluated for various process parameters such as the focal position, welding velocity and waveform parameters and the smooth back bead shape could be achieved.
A 3D visual sensing method using a laser structured beam is presented for robotic tracking applications in a simple and reliable manner. A cylindrical shaped laser structured beam is proposed to measure the pose and position of the target surface. When the proposed laser beam intersects on the surface along the target trajectory, an elliptic pattern is generated. Its ellipse parameters can be induced mathematically by the geometrical relationship of the sensor coordinate and target coordinate. The depth and orientation of the target surface are directly determined by the ellipse parameters. In particular, two discontinuous points on the ellipse pattern, induced by seam trajectory, indicate mathematically the 3D direction for robotic tracking. To investigate the performance of this method, experiments with a 6 axis robot system are conducted on two different types of seam trajectories. The results show that this method is very suitable for robot seam tracking applications due to its excellence in accuracy and efficiency.
This paper deals with the effect of laser welding parameters on the weld formation. Thin steels for automotive application were prepared so as to be welded with high power carbon dioxide laser system. Major process parameters were position of focus and travel speed. The effect of shielding gas was also discussed by employing the high speed photometry. Test results showed that the optimal position of focus varied in accordance with the joint configuration; bead-on-plate, butt or lap welding. It was recommended that the position of focus for the lap welding be located at slightly inner part of the material to be welded. In this case, however, it was noticeable that the weld penetration ratio, d/t$_{0}$ dropped drastically at the critical region. Results also demonstrated that both the bead width and penetration reduced as the travel speed increased. The penetration ratio showed two distinct regions; stabilized zone at the lower range of the travel spped and sudden drop zone at the higher range of travel speed. Lower limit of the penetration for acceptable weld was proved to be about 90% of the parent metal thickness based on the physical properties of the weld. Mixed gas application for both the shielding of molten metal and laser induced plasma control was recommended as far as the penetration was concerned.d.
In order to obtain the basic data concerning the optimal parameters in using Nd:YAG laser as a therapeutic modality to dentinal hypersensitivity, the author prepared 3 sections of sound dentin and 10 sections of sclerotic dentin with thickness of $0.5mm{\pm}0.1mm$ from human extracted teeth of anteriors and premolars, and applied the laser energy from a fiberoptic delivered, free running, pulsed Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1064nm, pulse duration $120{\mu}sec$, fiber diameter $320{\mu}m$) to surfaces of sound and sclerotic dentin sections for 1 second with contact/unidirectional moving mode of the fiber under speed of 3mm~4mm/sec and parameters of 0.5W/10Hz, 1.0W/10Hz, 1.5W/10Hz, 2.0W/10Hz: $62J/cm^2$, $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$. The author comparatively evaluated the characteristics of ultrastructural changes on surfaces of sound and sclerotic dentin sections irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser using the scanning electron microscopy. A fairly ill-defined bordered surface of partially closed and melted dentinal tubules can be seen on the scanning electron microscopic feature of the sound dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with energy density of $62J/cm^2$. The physical modification of sound dentin surface extensively occurred depended on the increase of energy density from $62J/cm^2$ to $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$. While, a fairly well-defined bordered surface of partially closed and melted dentinal tubules with thickened peritubular dentin can be seen on the scanning electron microscopic feature of the sclerotic dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with energy density of $62J/cm^2$. The physical modification of sclerotic dentin surface of a fairly rough, shallow depression with many cracks, thickened peritubular dentin and structureless dentinal tubules extensively occurred depended on the increase of energy density from $62J/cm^2$ to $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$ compared to those of sound dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser under the same parameters. Therefore, it is recommended that the pulsed Nd:YAG laser as a therapeutic modality to dentinal hypersensitivity should be applied with the less energy density than $62J/cm^2$ on the sound dentin surface, and its energy density on the partially sclerotic dentin surface should be lower than that on the sound dentin surface to preserve tooth from unnecessary excessive structural destruction.
Laser welding by fiber laser accompanied by a lot of spatter and humping bead. This is because the deep and narrow keyhole usually form due to high beam quality. So the weld bead is formed defects, because the plasma jet with a high vapor pressure make the molten pool on keyhole wall scattered. For such a reason, unstable behavior of keyhole is difficult to monitor laser welding by using the laser induced plasma. Mostly, fiber laser welding of thick plates most be influenced by this effect. Therefore, fiber laser welding has been difficult to apply the sole. Thus, laser welding monitoring based on plasma measurements have much difficulty in measurements and analysis of signal. In this study, influence of the plasma emission signal according to welding speed and laser power in fiber laser welding analysed by using RMS and FFT analysis. We can verify that RMS value of the plasma emission signal changes with welding parameters in fiber laser welding, and aspect ratio greater than 1, the peak of FFT frequency had been moved in accordance with welding parameter.
In the stereolithography process, the accuracy of product depends on laser power, scan speed, scan width, scan pattern, layer thickness, resin characteristics and so on. Therefore, appropriate process parameters are required for an accurate prototype. This paper presents a method to determine the key process parameters, i.e., laser scan speed, hatching space, and layer thickness based on scan length, scan area, and layer slope. In order to determine these parameters, three neural networks are employed to represent operator’s experience and knowledge. Optimum values on scan speed, hatching space and layer thickness are recommended to improve the surface roughness and build time on the developed SLA machine.
Direct laser melting (DLM) is a powder-based additive manufacturing process to produce parts by layer-by-layer laser melting. As the properties of the manufactured parts depend strongly on the deposited laser-melted bead, deposited layers obtained by the DLM process were characterized in this study. This investigation used a 200 W fiber laser to produce single-line beads under a variety of different energy distributions. In order to obtain a feasible range for the two main process parameters (i.e. laser power and scan rate), bead shapes of single track deposition were intensively investigated. The effects of the processing parameters, such as powder layer thickness and scan spacing, on geometries of the deposited layers have also been analyzed. As a result, minimum energy criteria that can achieve a complete melting have been suggested at the given powder layer thickness. The surface roughnesses of the deposited beads were strongly dependent on the overlap ratio of adjacent beads and on the energy distributions of laser power. Through microstructural analysis and hardness measurement, the morphological and mechanical properties of the deposited layers at various overlapped beads have also been characterized.
In this study, Al-Si-Mg alloys are additively manufactured using a selective laser melting (SLM) process from AlSi10Mg powders prepared from a gas-atomization process. The processing parameters such as laser scan speed and laser power are investigated for 3D printing of Al-Si-Mg alloys. The laser scan speeds vary from 100 to 2000 mm/s at the laser power of 180 and 270 W, respectively, to achieve optimized densification of the Al-Si-Mg alloy. It is observed that the relative density of the Al-Si-Mg alloy reaches a peak value of 99% at 1600 mm/s for 180 W and at 2000 mm/s for 270W. The surface morphologies of the both Al-Si-Mg alloy samples at these conditions show significantly reduced porosities compared to those of other samples. The increase in hardness of as-built Al-Si-Mg alloy with increasing scan speed and laser power is analyzed due to high relative density. Furthermore, it was found that cooling conditions after the heat-treatment for homogenization results in the change of dispersion status of Si phases in the Al-Si matrix but also affects tensile behaviors of Al-Si-Mg alloys. These results indicate that combination between SLM processing parameters and post-heat treatment should be considered a key factor to achieve optimized Al-Si alloy performance.
Laser direct writing process is developed 3rd harmonic Diode Pumped Solid State Laser with the near visible wavelength of 355 m sensitive polymer is irradiated by UV laser and developed using polymer solvent to obtain quasi-3D. It is important to reduce line width for image mode waveguides, so some investigations will be carried out in various conditions of process parameters such as laser power, writing speed, laser focus and optical properties of polymer. This process could be to fabricate a single mode waveguide without expensive mask projection method. Experimentally, the patterns of trapezoidal shape were manufactured into dimension of 8.4 mm width and 7.5 mm height. Propagation loss of straight waveguide measured 3 dB/cm at 1,550 nm.
When the laser diode is operated with continuous current, the light intensity from the laser diode deceases with time due to the temperature rise in the active layer. The phenomena, which is often called as DROOP, should be minimized in order to be used as a light source for the laser beam printer. We experimently examined the influences of the laser parameters such as threshold current, differential quantum efficiency on droop. It was found that decreasing the differential quantum efficiency of the laser diode is the effective way to minimize droop.
