This paper represents an absolute positioning system using a light navigation path for mobile robot. The absolute positioning system is composed of the projector unit which generates a laser beam using laser diode and mobile robot with the optical detector which has some optical sensors. The projector unit is fixed over the navigating plane of mobile robot to generate the light navigation path, and the optical detector located upper part of mobile robot detects the generated laser beam from the projector. The navigation of mobile robot is controlled by the micro-processor which compares the detected present position from the detector with the previously programmed navigation path. And experimental results show that our sensor system can be used for the absolute positioning system of the mobile robot.
Camera rigs for shooting 3D video are classified as manual, motorized, or fully automatic. Even in an automatic camera rig, the process of Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) video capture is very complex and time-consuming. One of the key time-consuming operations is capturing the distance parameters, which are near distance, far distance, and convergence distance. Traditionally these distances are measured by tape measure or triangular indirect measurement methods. These two methods consume a long time for every scene in shot. In our study, a compact laser distance sensing system with long range distance sensitivity is developed. The system is small enough to be installed on top of a camera and the measuring accuracy is within 2% even at a range of 50 m. The shooting time of an automatic camera rig equipped with the laser distance sensing system can be reduced significantly to less than a minute.
As a highly information-oriented society developes, various kinds of amorphous semiconductor devices, such as solar cells, electrographic printers, image sensors, and flat-panel televisions, have been developed as man/machine interfaces. This paper proposed the laser CVD techniques to deposit hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film on glass or dielectric substrate at low temperatures. Varying the deposition conditions, we examined optical and electrical charateristics of a-Si:H film deposited by Laser CVD.
Fiber ring laser based intra-cavity absorption spectroscopic sensor has great potential for high sensitivity gas detection. Using the rate equations and propagation equations, we investigated theoretically factors that affect the sensitivity of such fiber ring laser sensors and determined the optimal design parameters and conditions for significant enhancement of the system sensitivity. Experiments have been conducted to determine the sensitivity enhancement performance. The results showed a factor of 25 ~ 30 in sensitivity enhancement in the experimental system, agreeing well with the theoretical expectations. Experiments on acetylene detection have also been carried out and the results showed that the ring cavity significantly increases the signal absorption and that high sensitivity can be obtained for gas detection.
Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors have been most widely used in terrestrial robotic applications because they can provide dense and precise measurements of the surrounding environments. However, the reliability of LiDAR measurements can considerably vary due to the different reflectivities of laser beams to the reflecting surface materials. This study presents a robust LiDAR-based mapping method for the varying laser reflectivities in indoor environments using the framework of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). The proposed method can minimize the performance degradations in the SLAM accuracy by checking and discarding potentially unreliable LiDAR measurements in the SLAM front-end process. The gaps in point-cloud maps created by the proposed approach are filled by a Gaussian process regression method. Experimental results with a mobile robot platform in an indoor environment are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

In this study, structural deformation estimation using displacement-strain relationship is investigated. When displacements of a structure cannot be measured directly, estimation of displacements using strain data can be an alternative solution. Additionally, the deformation of the whole structure as well as the displacement at the point of interest can be estimated. Strain signals are obtained front Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensors that have an excellent multiplexing ability. Some experiments were performed on two beams and a plate to which FBG sensors were attached in the laboratory. Strain signals from FBG sensors along a single strand of optical fiber were obtained through wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) method. The beams and the plate structures were subjected to various loading conditions, and deformed shapes were reconstructed from the displacement-strain transformation relationship. The results show good agreements with those measured directly from laser sensors. Moreover, the whole structural shapes of the beams and the plate were estimated using only some strain sensors.

A autonomous vehicle requires improved and robust perception systems than conventional perception systems of intelligent vehicles. In particular, single sensor based perception systems have been widely studied by using cameras and laser radar sensors which are the most representative sensors for perception by providing object information such as distance information and object features. The distance information of the laser radar sensor is used for road environment perception of road structures, vehicles, and pedestrians. The image information of the camera is used for visual recognition such as lanes, crosswalks, and traffic signs. However, single sensor based perception systems suffer from false positives and true negatives which are caused by sensor limitations and road environments. Accordingly, information fusion systems are essentially required to ensure the robustness and stability of perception systems in harsh environments. This paper describes a perception system for autonomous vehicles, which performs information fusion to recognize road environments. Particularly, vision and laser radar sensors are fused together to detect lanes, crosswalks, and obstacles. The proposed perception system was validated on various roads and environmental conditions with an autonomous vehicle.

This paper presents to study the sensor fusion of positioning sensors using UKF(unscented Kalman filter) for positioning accuracy improvement of AGV(automatic guided vehicle). The major guidance systems for AGV are wired guidance and magnetic guidance system. Because they have high accuracy and fast response time, they are used in most of the FMS(flexible manufacturing system). However, they had weaknesses that are high maintenance cost and difficult of existing path modification. they are being changed to the laser navigation in recent years because of those problems. The laser navigation is global positioning sensor using reflecters on the wall, and it have high accuracy and easy to modify the path. However, its response time is slow and it is influenced easily by disturbance. In this paper, we propose the sensor fusion method of the laser navigation and local sensors using UKF. The proposed method is improvement method of accuracy through error analysis of sensors. For experiments, we used the axle-driven forklift AGV and compared the positioning results of the proposed method with positioning results of the laser navigation. In experimental result, we verified that the proposed method can improve positioning accuracy about 16%.
In this study, the design of 4S-Van system is discussed fur the implementation of laser mapping system. Laser device is fast and accurate sensor that acquires 3D road and surface data. The orientation laser sensor is determined by loosely coupled (D)GPS/INS Integration. Considering current system architecture, (D)GPS/INS integration is performed far performance analysis of direct georeferencing and self-calibration is performed for interior and exterior orientation and displacement. We utilized 3 laser sensors for compensation and performance improvement. 3D surface data from laser scanner and texture image from CCD camera can be used to implement 3D visualization.

In the multi-pass welding of pressure vessels or ships, the mechanical touch sensor system is generally used together with a manipulator to measure the gap and depth of the narrow gap to perform seam tracking. Unfortunately, such mechanical touch sensors may commit measuring errors caused by the eterioration of the measuring device. An automation system of narrow gap multi-pass welding using a laser vision system which can track the seam line of narrow gap and which can control welding power has been developed. The joint profile of the narrow gap, with 250mm depth and 28mm width, can be captured by laser vision camera. The image is then processed for defining tracking positions of the torch during welding. Then, the real-time correction of lateral and vertical position of the torch can be done by the laser vision system. The adaptive control of welding conditions like welding Currents and welding speeds, can also be performed by the laser vision system, which cannot be done by conventional mechanical touch systems. The developed automation system will be adopted to reduce the idle time of welders, which happens frequently in conventional long welding processes, and to improve the reliability of the weld quality as well.
