Equi-spaced multichannel stabilization with a reference frequency from ($^13C_2H_2$) molecules and optical fiber fabry-perot filter (아세칠렌가스($^13C_2H_2$)분자의 흡수선을 이용한 기준 광신호 및 광섬유 파브리-페로 필터에 의한 등간격 다중채널의 안정화)

  • Using one of the absorption lines of $^{13}C_2H_2$ molecules near the zero dispersion wavelength(1549.49nm) of dispersion shifted fiber, we stabilized center frequency of an optical fiber Fabry-Perot filter. The free spectral range of the filter is 100 GHz for 100 GHz channel allocation. For equi-spaced three channel multiplexing, channel locking of three DFB-LDs to transmission peaks of the fiber Fabry-Perot filter was tried. To investigate the effect of dithering current applied to each DFB-LD, the change of DFB-LD linewidth was measured.

  • A self-pulsating multisection distributed-feedback laser diode (DFB LD) can potentially realize all-optical clock extraction. This device generally consists of three sections, two DFB sections and one waveguide section. The most important variable in this device is detuning, which is the relative spectral position between the stop bands of two DFB sections. We fabricated a novel structure in which two gratings were located one over and one under the active layers. Each grating structure was independently defined in processing so that detuning, which is the prerequisite for self-pulsation, could be easily controlled. Observing various self-pulsating phenomena in these devices under several detuning conditions, we characterized the phenomena as dispersive Q-switching, mode beating, and self-mode-locking.

  • 이동통신망에서 RF 신호를 송수신하는 기지국(base station)과 이동 통신 신호의 교환 전송을 담당하는 중앙국(central station)을 광섬유로 연결하여 구성하는 SCM (Subcarrier Multiplexing) 전송 시스템은 미래의 음성, 영상, 데이터 서비스 등의 이동통신 시스템에 적용할 수 있기 때문에 최근 관심사가 커지고 있다. 이동통신망을 위한 SCM 광전송 시스템의 유용성에도 불구하고, CDMA RF 신호를 전송하는 과정에서 많은 물리적인 제약이 있다. 특히, 많은 가입자의 CDMA RF 신호가 하나의 레이저 다이오드(LD: Laser Diode)를 구동시킬 때, RF 신호의 합이 레이저 다이오드의 선형영역을 벗어나면 클리핑(clipping)이나 비선형 왜곡이 발생하여 시스템의 성능을 저하시키게 된다. 본 논문에서는 CDMA RF 신호의 SCM 광전송 성능분석을 통해 레이저 다이오드에 의해 발생하는 비선형 왜곡의 영향을 분석하고, 분석 결과로부터 레이저 다이오드에 의한 비선형 효과를 최소화 할 수 있는 비선형 왜곡 보상구조를 제안하였다. 또한 제안된 레이저 다이오드 비선형 보상기의 성능을 시뮬레이션과 실험을 통해 얻어진 BER로부터 측정하였다.

Reflection-type Optical Waveguide Index Profiling Technique

  • We report a new configuration of a reflection-type confocal scanning optical microscope system for measuring the refractive index profile of an optical waveguide. Several improvements on the earlier design are proposed; a light emitting diode (LED) at 650 nm wavelength instead of a laser diode (LD) or He-Ne laser is used as a light source for better index precision, and a simple longitudinal linear scanning and curve fitting techniques are adapted instead of a servo control for maintaining an optical confocal arrangement. We have obtained spatial resolution of 700 nm and an index precision of $2\times10^{-4}$. To verify the system's capability, the refractive index profiles of a conventional multimode fiber and a home-made four-mode fiber were examined with our proposed measurement method.

Lasing Modes of LD-Pumped Fiber Grating Lasers

  • Lasing modes of laser-diode-pumped fiber grating lasers are analyzed by coupled-mode theory. First, a power series solution of the coupled-mode equations is derived under the assumption of an exponentially-decreasing longitudinal modal gain profile for a laser-diode-pumped grating section, followed by determination of the transfer matrix for such a section. Based on these results, an eigenvalue equation for oscillation is then derived and solved numerically for the lasing modes of uniform and phase-shifted fiber grating lasers. Comparisons made with the uniform-gain results indicate that, surprisingly, the lasing mode characteristics are not as significantly altered as might be expected in most cases, even for a highly nonuniform gain profile. In the case of a phase-shifted grating, the phase-shift position appears to have a much greater impact on determining the threshold gain, the modal field distribution, and the front-to-back output power ratio.

  • We improved the performance of the spectrum-sliced light source for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks by employing a Fabry-Perot laser diode(FP-LD). We found that the FP-LDs can suppress the intensity noise as significantly as using a gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier. The transmission characteristics were measured and analyzed in both conditions with and without employing an FP-LD.

  • Operational and thermal characteristics of a thin disk Yb:YAG crystal with a thickness of 0.8 mm were studied using as a pumping source a fiber-coupled 930 nm laser diode. The heat generated in the crystal was dissipated by placing both surfaces in contact with copper plates with central hole, and the dependence of the temperature change in the illuminated spot on hole size was investigated by measuring the spectral change of the lasing peaks. The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical efficiency with respect to the LD pump power were as high as 42.2% and 34.8%, respectively. The temperature at the illuminated spot increased with diode current and with increasing hole size of the copper plate. When the hole size considerably exceeded the crystal thickness, the temperature rise deviated from the linear increase at high pump power.

  • A time-domain modeling approach is used to study characteristics of a widely tunable coupled-ring reflector (CRR) laser diode(LD). The CRR consists of a bus waveguide and two coupled ring resonators coupled to the bus without resorting to distributed Bragg grating structure. The tuning range can be a few tens of nanometers with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 35dB through the adjustment of currents into the phase control sections in the rings. The CRR laser diode has long effective cavity length compared to conventional laser diodes. Accordingly, a broad additional resonance peak in the amplitude modulation characteristics is observed between 20 to 30 GHz, implying the extension of amplitude modulation bandwidth.

  • Depends on the running dry of the radio resources for the next generation of wireless communication system the estimated possibilities of the visible light which used for the devices such as signal light, the electric display board, guide board and so on applied for the next generation wireless network is the topic to be explored in this paper. Since radiation efficiency utilization for the wireless network has its capacity to become a trend direction we will study also on its application as well as the technique standardization.

A Study on the Optical Bistable Characteristic of a Multi-Section DFB-LD (다전극 DFB-LD의 광 쌍안정 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A multi-section DFB-LD shows optical bistability subject to externally injected light signal, then it has potential applications such as wavelength conversion and optical logic gates. In this paper, we have studied the optical bistability in multi-section DFB-LD using split-step time-domain model. It is confirmed that the multi-section DFB-LD, which is excited inhomogeneously, shows bistability. The optical bistable characteristics are investigated when input light is injected into a absorptive region. Simulation results show that multi-section DFB-LD works as a flip-flop depending on the set-reset optical pulse which has a few ns in switching time and a few pj in switching energy, so that it can act as a optical logic device. Besides, if we change the carrier lifetime and the differential gain coefficient, it is expected that the response time of optical output signal can be reduced.
