The aim of this paper is the study of instability state of boiling water reactors with a method based in largest Lyapunov exponents (LLEs). Detecting the presence of chaos in a dynamical system is an important problem that is solved by measuring the LLE. Lyapunov exponents quantify the exponential divergence of initially close state-space trajectories and estimate the amount of chaos in a system. This method was applied to a set of signals from several nuclear power plant (NPP) reactors under commercial operating conditions that experienced instabilities events, apparently each of a different nature. Laguna Verde and Forsmark NPPs with in-phase instabilities, and Cofrentes NPP with out-of-phases instability. This study presents the results of intrinsic instability in the boiling water reactors of three NPPs. In the analyzed cases the limit cycle was not reached, which implies that the point of equilibrium exerts influence and attraction on system evolution.

To quantify irregular body motions the time series analysis was applied to the gait study. The motions obtained from gait experiment are complex to exhibit nonlinear behaviors. The purpose of this study is to measure quantitatively the characteristics of the major six joints of the body during walking. The gait experiments were carried out for eighteen young males walking on a motor driven treadmill. Joint motions were captured using eight video cameras, and then three dimensional kinematics of the neck and the upper and lower extremities were computed by KWON 3D motion analysis software. The largest Lyapunov exponent was calculated from the time series to quantify stabilities of each joint. The results provides a data set of nonlinear dynamic characteristics for six joints engaged in normal walking.

Quantifying dynamic stability is important to assessment of falling risk or functional recovery for leg injured people. Human locomotion is complex and known to exhibit nonlinear dynamical behaviors. The purpose of this study is to quantify major joints of the body using chaos analysis during walking. Time series of the chaotic signals show how gait patterns change over time. The gait experiments were carried out for ten young males walking on a motorized treadmill. Joint motions were captured using eight video cameras, and then three dimensional kinematics of the neck and the upper and lower extremities were computed by KWON 3D motion analysis software. The correlation dimension and the largest Lyapunov exponent were calculated from the time series to quantify stabilities of the joints. This study presents a data set of nonlinear dynamic characteristics for eleven joints engaged in normal level walking.
The physiological systems have nonlinear complex phenomena. Expecially, the flow of capillary blood vessel has a nonlinear dynamic system. Thus, this study analyzes nonlinear characteristics of the flow of capillary blood vessel in physiological systems using chaotic tools(phase space reconstruction, correlation dimension, largest lyapunov exponent). Experimental data have been acquired from examining 10 rabbits. The results of chaotic analysis showed a decreasing largest lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension according to increasement glocose index. And we also know the chaotic behavior.
Assuming that EEG(electroencephalogram), which is generated by a nonlinear electrical of billions of neurons in the brain, has chaotic characteristics, it is confirmend by frequency spectrum analysis, log frequency spectrum analysis, correlation dimension analysis and Lyapunov exponents analysis. Some chaotic characteristics are related to the degree of brain activity. The slope of log frequency spectrum increases and the correlation dimension decreasess with respect to the activities, while the largest Lyapunov exponent has only a rough correlation.

The anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) is an important stabilizer of knee joint. The ACL injury of knee is common and a serious ACL injury leads to ligament reconstruction surgery. Gait analysis is essential to identify knee condition of patients who display abnormal gait. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and classify knee condition of ACL deficient patients using a nonlinear dynamic method. The nonlinear method focuses on understanding how variations in the gait pattern change over time. The experiments were carried out for 17 subjects(l2 healthy subjects and five subjects with unilateral deficiency) walking on a motorized treadmill for 100 seconds. Three dimensional kinematics of the lower extremity were collected by using four cameras and KWON 3D motion analysis system. The largest Lyapunov exponent calculated from knee joint flexion-extension time series was used to quantify knee stability. The results revealed the difference between healthy subjects and patients. The deficient knee was significantly unstable compared with the contralateral knee. This study suggests an evaluation scheme of the severity of injury and the level of recovery. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.

Gait analysis is essential to identify accurate cause and knee condition from patients who display abnormal walking. Traditional linear tools can, however, mask the true structure of motor variability, since biomechanical data from a few strides during the gait have limitation to understanding the system. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a more precise dynamic method. The chaos analysis, a nonlinear technique, focuses on understand how variations in the gait pattern change over time. Eight healthy eight subjects walked on a treadmill for 100 seconds at 60 Hz. Three dimensional walking kinematic data were obtained using two cameras and KWON3D motion analyzer. The largest Lyapunov exponent from the measured knee angular displacement time series was calculated to quantify local stability. This study quantified the variability present in time series generated from gait parameter via chaos analysis. Knee flexion-extension patterns were found to be chaotic. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.

Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) injury of the knee is common and a serious ACL injury leads to ligament reconstruction surgery. Gait analysis is used to identify the result of surgery. The purpose of this study is to numerically evaluate and classify knee condition of patients through the chaos analysis. Experiments were carried out for 13 subjects (8 healthy subjects, 5 ACL deficient patients) walking on a treadmill. Sagittal kinematic data of the right lower extremity were collected by using a 3D motion analysis system. The recorded gait patterns were digitized and then coordinated by KWON3D. The largest Lyapunov exponent from the measured knee angular displacement time series was calculated to quantify local stability. It was found that the Lyapunov exponent becomes larger as the knee condition becomes worse. This study suggested a method of the severity of injury and the level of recovery. The proposed method discerns difference between healthy subjects and patients.

This paper demonstrates that the largest Lyapunov exponent λ of recurrent neural networks can be controlled efficiently by a stochastic gradient method. An essential core of the proposed method is a novel stochastic approximate formulation of the Lyapunov exponent λ as a function of the network parameters such as connection weights and thresholds of neural activation functions. By a gradient method, a direct calculation to minimize a square error (λ - λ$\^$obj/)$^2$, where λ$\^$obj/ is a desired exponent value, needs gradients collection through time which are given by a recursive calculation from past to present values. The collection is computationally expensive and causes unstable control of the exponent for networks with chaotic dynamics because of chaotic instability. The stochastic formulation derived in this paper gives us an approximation of the gradients collection in a fashion without the recursive calculation. This approximation can realize not only a faster calculation of the gradient, but also stable control for chaotic dynamics. Due to the non-recursive calculation. without respect to the time evolutions, the running times of this approximation grow only about as N$^2$ compared to as N$\^$5/T that is of the direct calculation method. It is also shown by simulation studies that the approximation is a robust formulation for the network size and that proposed method can control the chaos dynamics in recurrent neural networks efficiently.
This work verifies the chaotic motion of a steer-by-wire vehicle dynamic system, and then elucidates an application of dither smoothing to control the chaos of a vehicle model. The largest Lyapunov exponent is estimated from the synchronization to identify periodic and chaotic motions. Then, a bifurcation diagram reveals complex nonlinear behaviors over a range of parameter values. Finally, a method for controlling a chaotic vehicle dynamic system is proposed. This method involves applying another external input, called a dither signal, to the system. The designed controller is demonstrated to work quite well for nonlinear systems in achieving robust stability and protecting the vehicle from slip or spin. Some simulation results are presented to establish the feasibility of the proposed method.
