In the present study, blow forming characteristics of commercially roiled AZ31 alloy sheets were investigated. Two different kinds of AZ31 sheets were originally fabricated by using direct casting and strip casting methods respectively. Both sheets have similar grain sizes of about $7{\mu}m$ with a relatively equiaxed structure after rolling. A series of tensile tests were carried out to get flow behavior in terms of temperature and strain rate. Also, grain size effect was investigated by annealing as-received sheet at elevated temperatures. Elongation increased with temperature increment as well expected. However, the differences in tensile test condition did not give much difference in elongation even at the temperature range where a large elongation would be expected with such as fine grain of $7{\mu}m$. Blow forming experiments showed that forming condition did not result in higher difference in dome height. However, the interesting feature from this study was that formability of this AZ31 alloy got different with stress condition. Firstly, biaxial stress condition might result in lower temperature and strain rate dependencies compared to uniaxial tension results for both DC and SC sheets. Secondly, DC showed slower grain growth in uniaxial tension than in biaxial stress state while SC has much higher grain growth rage in uniaxial tension than in bulging.
During the last decade there have been many studies on the new ceramics especially engineering ceramics. Sintered silicon carbide is one of the main materials in engineering ceramics. This study shows the effects of surface treatment and microstructure especially the abnormal grain growth on the strength of sintered SiC. Surface of sintered SiC and treated with 400, 800 and 1200 grit diamond wheel. Grain growth is introduced by increasing the sintering times at 205$0^{\circ}C$. The $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ transformation occurs during the sintering of $\beta$-starting materials and is often accompanied by abnormal grain growth. The overall strength distribution are estimated using the Weibull statistics. The results show that the strength of sintered SiC is limited by extrinsic surface flaws in normal-sintered specimens. And it is sound that the finer the surface finishing and the grain size the higher the strength results. But the strength of abnormal sintering specimens is limited by the abnormally-grown large tabular grains. The Weibull modulus increases with the decreasing grain size and the decreasing grit size of grinding.

Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is known the second hardest material followed diamond and was provided industry as an abrasive grain in the late 1960's. Since the introduction of CBN, a large amount of research has been carried out to determine the best application condition for grinding operation. Despite the advantages in its characteristics, CBN has not yet gained full acceptance as more excellent abrasive grain than traditional one. The reason for this state is that the surface roughness ground by CBN is worse than by traditional one and dressing and truing is very difficult. This led user's resistance to the use of CBN as an abrasive grain. Present study is to investigate the cause of lower surface roughness ground by CBN single crystal abrasive grain comparing with traditional one.

Multiseeding with (100)/(100) grain junctions of top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed YBCO superconductors was studied. The effect of the number of seeds and the distance between two seeds on the levitation forces and the trapped magnetic fields of the TSMG-processed YBCO samples was investigated. Multiple seeding shortened the processing time for the fabrication of TSMC-processed YBCO superconductors. The large magnetic field was trapped at the grain junction when two seeds was placed without spacing, while the amount of the magnetic field decreased when the seed distance increased. This is attributed to the increased amount of the residual melt phases around the grain junctions.
The present study aims to identify the effect of sintering atmosphere [$O_2$, 75$N_2$-25 $H_2$ (mol%) and $H_2$] on microstructural evolution at the relatively low sintering temperature of 1040$^{\circ}C$. Samples sintered in $O_2$ showed a bimodal microstructure consisting of fine matrix grains and large abnormal grains. Sintering in 75 $N_2$ - 25 $H_2$ (mol %) and $H_2$ caused the extent of abnormal grain growth to increase. These changes in grain growth behaviour are explained by the effect of the change in step free energy with sintering atmosphere on the critical driving force necessary for rapid grain growth. The results show the possibility of fabricating $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ at low temperature with various microstructures via proper control of sintering atmosphere.

In order to control the grain size, the spark plasma sintering technique is applied for the manufacturing of Cu-26.7Al-4.05AI(wt.%) shape memory alloy with pure Cu, Zn, and Al element powders. The sintering processes were carried out under different atmospheres. The sintered bodies were denser under Ar or Ar+4%$H_2$gas atmosphere than under vacuum. With use of small-sized powders, a very small average grain size of 2∼3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was obtained, but the single phase was not formed. With the large-sized powders the single austenitic phase was observed with the average grain size of $70∼72\mu\textrm{m}$. When the different size of raw powders was mixed, it is confirmed that the average grain size of the manufactured alloys was 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with single austenitic phase, but the distribution of grain size was not uniform.
The effect of grain size on the damping capacity of Fe-26Mn-2Al alloy studied in this paper has been investigated after changing the microstructure by cold rolling and changing grain size. Micro structures in Fe-26Mn-2Al at room temperature consist of a large quantity of austenite and a small quantity of ${\varepsilon}\;and\;{\alpha}'$ martensite. And ${\varepsilon}\;and\;{\alpha}'$ martensite was increased by increasing the degree of cold rolling. The content of deformation induced martensite was increased with increasing the degree of cold rolling. Damping capacity was linearly increased with increasing ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content, which suggests that stacking faults and ${\varepsilon}$ martensite variant boundaries are the principle damping sources. With increasing the grain size in Fe-26Mn-2Al alloy, the damping capacity was increased due to increasing the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite by decrement in stability of austenite phase. With decreasing the grain size, the content of deformation induced martensite was decreased and the damping capacity was decreased.

Ferroelectric lanthanum-substituted Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$(BLT) thin films were fabricated by spin-coating onto a Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by metalorganic decomposition technique. The grain size in BLT thin films were prepared with controlled by various drying process. The effect of grain size on the crystallization and ferroelectric properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope. The dependence of crystallization and electrical properties are related to the grain size in BLT thin films with different drying temperature. The remanent polarization of BLT thin film increases with the increasing grain size. The value of 2P$_{r}$ and E$_{c}$ of BLT thin film dried at 45$0^{\circ}C$ were 25.9 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 85 kV/cm, respectively. The BLT thin film with larger grain size has better fatigue properties. The fatigue properties revealed that small grained film showed more degradation of switching charge than large grained films.lms.s.
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) technique had been adapted to the Mg alloy (AZ31) for achieving effective grain refinement through severe deformation. The average grain size of $2.5{\mu}m$ could be obtained after 4 passes. The stability of the ECAPed structure at elevated temperatures was examined by annealing the ECAPed materials over a wide range of temperature between 473 and 748 K. The average activation energy, Q, for static grain growth of 1, 2 and 3 passes was 33.7 kJ/mole (=0.25QL, activation for lattice diffusion). The abnormally low Q value in the lower temperature range may indicate that grain growth occurs in the unrecrystallized microstructure where non-equilibrium grain boundaries containing a large number of extrinsic dislocations exist. The yield stresses of the ECAPed alloys decreased whereas the elongations increased after the ECAP process. These results should be related to the modification of texture for easier slip on basal plane.

Microstructural and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-46 wt%Ni and Fe-36 wt%Ni alloys were investigated. Alloys were prepared by the electrodeposition process. The electrolytes were iron sulfate/nickel chloride-based and iron chloride/nickel sulfamate-based solutions. Fe-46 wt%Ni alloy was FCC structure with grain size of 10 nm, but FCC and BCC phases were found in Fe-36 wt%Ni alloy and its grain size was smaller. Effective permeability of Fe-36 wt%Ni alloy was higher than that of Fe-46 wt%Ni alloy in the high frequency range because of large electrical resistivity and small eddy current loss resulted from grain size decrease. Up to $300^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature, grain growth of Fe-Ni alloys slowly occured. Conversely, annealing above $450^{\circ}C$ led to a drastic grain growth. In that case, effective permeability was decreased at the temperature lower than $300^{\circ}C$ but at $300^{\circ}C$ or higher effective permeability was increased. At the high frequency of 1 MHz, electrodeposited Fe-Ni alloys had higher effective permeability with an decrease in the grain size.
