Large diameter piles can be defined as piles with diameter of at least 0.76 m (2.5 ft). In bridge foundation, large diameter piles have been used as pier foundations and their use has been increased greatly. In this study, static pile load tests for large diameter piles peformed in Kwangan Grande Bridge construction site were introduced. Also, various sensor installation methods for several types of piles (that is, open-ended steel pipe pile, drilled shafts and socketed pipe piles), pipe axial load measuring method, load transfer analysis method and pile load test results (pile-head load - settlement curve, and pile axial load distribution curve along the pile depth) were introduced.

It is very difficult to accomplish load tests of piles with large diameter constructed on the offshore area, because of requirement for large scaled loading equipment and bad testing conditions. Therefore, so far in many cases pile driving dynamic formulas have applied to quality control, and recently dynamic load test method is widely used for confirming bearing capacities of such piles. However, in cases of piles with very large diameter about 2,500mm, it is nearly impossible for regular type load test methods of piles such as static and dynamic to apply owing to very large design load. This is case studies of load tests such as modified static and dynamic load tests of piles and point load tests of rock samples for estimating rational allowable bearing capacity of very large diameter piles constructed on the marine area.

In Hong Kong, large-diameter (${\ge}600mm$) bored piles and large-section excavated rectangular barrettes are commonly used to support tall buildings to resist both vertical and horizontal loads. These piles and barrettes penetrate through and may found in saprolitic soils and decomposed rocks. Generally, the design of these large bored piles and barrettes involves considerable amount of uncertainty and design parameters must usually be verified by field tests. In this paper, over 50 full-scale load tests on large-diameter bored piles and over 15 large-section of rectangular barrettes in Hong Kong are reviewed and interpreted critically, in particular the degree of mobilisation of side shear resistance using a mobilization rating (MR) factor and a displacement index (DI) for floating bored piles and barrettes and rock-socketed piles, respectively. The author was heavily involved with many of these load tests. The diameter of the bored piles tested ranges from 0.6m to 1.8m and the depth varies from 12m to 75m. Sizes of barrettes critically reviewed include $2.2m{\times}0.6m,\;2.2m{\times}0.8m,\;2.8m{\times}0.8m\;and\;2.8m{\times}1.0m$ (on plan) and the depth varies from 36m and 63m. Based on these field tests, a new failure load criterion for large-diameter bored piles and barrettes is developed and proposed. The side shear resistance of the bored piles and barrettes is quantitatively analyzed with respect to local displacements, standard penetration tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for rock sockets and using the effective stress principle. In addition, the effects of construction including post-grouting, construction time, side scraping and excavation tools on side shear resistance are investigated and reported.

Large PHC piles with a diameter of 1,000mm or larger were recently introduced for the first time in Korea. This paper presents full-scale static and dynamic pile load tests performed on two 1,000mm PHC piles and two composite piles with steel pipe piles of the same diameter in the upper portion, installed by driving and pre-boring. The objectives of the tests include evaluating pile drivability, load-settlement relation, allowable bearing capacity, and the stability of mechanical splicing element for the composite pile(a.k.a. non-welding joint). The performance of the large diameter PHC piles were thought to be satisfactory compared to that of middle sized PHC piles with a long history of successful applications in the domestic and foreign markets.

Using the large diameter (D = 2,500mm, L = 40m) batter steel pipe piles, designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during the static compression load test of socketed test piles (D = 1,000mm, L = 40m), static pile load tests for large diameter instrumented rock-socketed piles were performed. The reaction steel pipe piles were driven 20m into the marine deposit and weathered rock layer and then l0m socketed with reinforced concrete through the weathered rock layer and into hard rock layer. Steel pipe and concrete in the steel pile part, and concrete and rebars in the socketed parts were instrumented to measure strains in each part. The pullout amounts of reaction pile heads were also measured with LVDT. During the static pile load test, total compressional load of about 20MN was loaded on the head of test piles, but load above 20MN was not loaded due to lack of loading capacity of loading system. Over the course of the study, maximum pullout amount up to 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded op to 10MN and 1mm of pullout amount was measured. More than 85% of pullout load was transfered in the residual weathered rock layer and about 10% in the soft rock layer, which was somewhat different transfer mechanism in the static compressional load tests.
The pullout behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles(diameter = 2,500mm, length = 38~40m), which were designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during a static compression load test on a pile(diameter = 1,000m, length = 40m), was investigated. The steel pipe piles were driven by 20m into a marine deposit and weathered soil layer and then socketed by 10m into underlying weathered and soft rock layers. The sockets and pipe were filled with reinforced concrete. The steel pipe and concrete in the steel pipe zone and concrete and rebars in the socketed zone were fully instrumented to measure strains in each zone. The pullout deformations of the reaction pile heads were measured by LVDTs. Over the course of the study, a maximum uplift deformation of 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded to 10MN, and 1mm of residual uplift deflection was measured. In the reaction piles, about 83% and about 12% of the applied pullout loads were transferred in the weathered rock layer and in the soft rock layer, respectively. Also, at an uplift force of 10MN, shear stresses due to the uplift in the weathered rock layer md soft rock layer were developed as much as 125.3kPa and 61.8kPa, respectively. Thus, the weathered rock layer should be utilized as resisting layer in which frictional farce could be mobilized greatly.

In this paper, a case study of drivability and bearing capacity of large diameter steel pipe piles at PTT LNG site in Thailand is introduced. The LNG facilities were designed to be founded on steel pipe pile foundations driven into the weathered rock formation overlaid by sand layers. The drivability analyses of open ended pipe piles were carried out using GRL WEAP program and the bearing capacities of the piles were estimated. Dynamic load tests were performed to evaluate end bearing resistance, and it is shown that the measured end bearing resistance is smaller than the calculated end bearing because the plugging does not develop sufficiently in case of large diameter pipe piles.
Two large diameter steel cased piles (TS-1 and TS-2) were installed and load-tested with the maximum load of 2000 ton at Kwang-An grand bridge. One of the test piles (TS-1) was socketed into the fresh rock and the other test pile (TS-2) was socketed into the weathered rock. Most loads were carried by the weathered rock layer at the maximum applied load for the test piles. In addition, numerical studies were performed using PENTAGON 3D and ROCKET. Based on this study, the weathered rock layer provided sufficient side resistances and possibility of an alternative embedded layer if weathered rocks are deeply layered over fresh rock, which caused difficulties and cost in construction.

Recently, the demand for large diameter piles has been rapidly increased in order to secure the allowable bearing capacity of pile foundation due to the increase of large structures such as high rise buildings. In this study, to improve the shear capacity of a conventional PHC pile, a large diameter composite PHC pile strengthened by in-filled concrete and shear reinforcement was manufactured. All the piles were tested according to the shear strength test method of Korean Standard. As a result of the shear test, the F-type piles which are produced without shear reinforcement occurred abrupt horizontal cracks after flexural and inclined shear cracks occurred. On the contrary, the FT-type piles which are produced with shear reinforcement exhibited stable flexural and inclined shear cracks uniformly over the entire pile without abrupt horizontal cracks. Furthermore, the maximum load of the large diameter composite PHC pile improved to 2.9 times in the F series, and more than 3.3 times in the FT series compared to the conventional PHC pile. This result indicated that FT-type piles had excellent composite behavior due to the shear reinforcement and effectively prevented the unstable growth of inclined shear cracks.
