Many papers have studied computer simulations of elastic bodies undergoing large deflections and large deformations. But there have not been many attempts to check the validity of the numerical formulations because the simulation results could not be matched without correct input data such as material properties and damping effects. In this paper, these values are obtained from real experiment with a high-speed camera and a data acquisition system. The simulation results with the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) are compared with the results of real experiments. Two examples, a thin cantilever beam and a thin plate, are studied to verify whether the simulation results are well matched to experimental results.

The finite element method (FEM), discrete element method (DEM), and Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) are among the standard numerical techniques applied in computational geo-mechanics. However, in some cases there no possibility for modelling by traditional finite analytical techniques or other mesh-based techniques. The solution presented in the current study as a completely Lagrangian and mesh-free technique is smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). This method was basically applied for simulation of fluid flow by dividing the fluid into several particles. However, several researchers attempted to simulate soil-water interaction, landslides, and failure of soil by SPH method. In fact, this method is able to deal with behavior and interaction of different states of materials (liquid and solid) and multiphase soil models and their large deformations. Soil indicates different behaviors when interacting with water, structure, instrumentations, or different layers. Thus, study into these interactions using the mesh based grids has been facilitated by mesh-less SPH technique in this work. It has been revealed that the fast development, computational sophistication, and emerge of mesh-less particle modeling techniques offer solutions for problems which are not modeled by the traditional mesh-based techniques. Also it has been found that the smoothed particle hydrodynamic provides advanced techniques for simulation of soil materials as compared to the current traditional numerical methods. Besides, findings indicate that the advantages of applying this method are its high power, simplicity of concept, relative simplicity in combination of modern physics, and particularly its potential in study of large deformations and failures.

This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin rods undergoing large rotational deformation. Rods are thin objects such as ropes and hairs that can be abstracted as one-dimensional structures. Development of a real-time physical model that can produce visually convincing animation of thin rods has been a challenging problem in computer graphics. We adopt continuum mechanics to formulate the governing equation, and develop a modal warping technique for rods to integrate the governing equation in real-time; This is a novel extension of the previous modal warping techniques developed for solids and shells. Experimental results show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes and it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations.
For construction of steel structures, thin steel plates have been often used and welding is the main manufacturing process. However, welding processes cause some problems(welding residual stresses, welding deformations, etc.). In these problems, welding deformation is extremely harmful to the safety of structures especially. Therefore, in this study, a numerical analysis program based on large deformation plate theory has been developed to analyze and predict the welding deformation in thin plates. From the result of numerical analyse, we can find two parameters, thermal cycles and mechanical restraints affecting the welding deformation of structures. It is considered that large difference of thermal cycles and mechanical restraints in the width direction bring about welding deformation. Results of simulation have the same tendency of deformation distribution in width direction as experimental formulas.
This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Thin shells are almost two-dimensional structures visually well approximated as surfaces, such as leaves, paper sheets, hats, aluminum cans. Unfortunately accurate simulation of these structures requires one of the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, shell theory [4]. Moreover, there has not yet been any work reported to produce visually convincing animation of them while achieving real-time performance. Motivated by discrete shells [5] and modal warping [3], we formulate dynamics of thin shells using mass-spring models instead of finite element models, and then apply the modal warping technique to cope with large rotational deformation of thin shells. Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.
Many papers have studied computer-aided simulations of elastic bodies undergoing large deflections and large deformations. But there have been few attempts to validate their numerical formulations used in these studies. The main aim of this paper is to validate the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) by comparing the results to experimental measurements on beams. Physical experiments with a high-speed camera were carried out to capture the large displacement of the beam and to verify the results of computer simulations. To consider the damping forces, the Rayleigh's damping and quadratic damping are employed and compared to the experimental results, respectively. Numerical results obtained from computer simulations were compared with the results from the physical experiments according to the $1^{st}$ mode and the $2^{nd}$ mode of the beam, respectively.

Precast large panel structures have various connection system such as the horizontal slab-to-wall connection, the vertical wall to wall connection, horizontal slab-to-slab connection, etc. Horizontal connection is connected by vertical tie bars, and vertical joint is connected loop bars and shear keys. The basic function is equalized deformations on later forces and the entire wall panel assembly acts as monolithic actions. Under lateral load some slip occurs in almost vertical connections. The shape and detail of precast connections are very important to the monolithic behavior of overall structures. The paper is a study on the design method and new elasto-plastic analysis of the connections by rigid-bodies spring model.

An experimental study to evaluate structural capacity of an embedded plate connected with prestressed concrete beam was performed. Embedded steel plates and prestressed concrete beam were connected with stud-bolts at the ends of concrete beam specimens. About 1,000 kN concentrated load was applied at 450mm away from the end of beam specimen. A 3,000 kN capacity static Oil-jack was used to direct concentrated load. The maximum strain of stud-bolt recorded $90{\times}10^{-6}$(mm/mm) and wide width cracks were not founded. Any falling failures of concrete and large deformations were not founded either between steel plate and prestressed concrete specimen. As a result, construction performance can be improved using this embedded steel plate connection system apply to large space educational facilities.
A finite element analysis is performed for lateral buckling problems on the basis of a geometrically nonlinear formulation for a beam with small elastic strain but with possibly large rotations. The total Lagrangian formulation for a general large deformation, which involves finite rotations, is chosen and the exponential map is used to treat finite rotations from the Eulerian point of view. For lateral buckling, the point of vanishing determinant of the resulting unsymmetric tangent stiffness is traced to examine its relationship to bifurcation points. It is found that the points of vanishing determinant is not corresponding to bifurcation points for large deformations in general, which suggests that the present unsymmetric tangent stiffness is not an exact first derivative of internal forces with respect to displacement. This is illustrated through several numerical examples and followed by appropriate discussion.
