This research suggested the traffic signal calculation model of active transit signal priority using a shockwave model. Using this signal priority timing optimization model, the shockwave area is computed under the condition of Early Green and Green Extension among active transit signal priority techniques. This study suggested the speed estimation method of backward shockwave using average travel time and intersection passing time. A shockwave area change is calculated according to signal timing change of transit signal priority. Moreover, this signal timing calculation model could determine the optimal signal priority timings to minimize intersection delay of general vehicles. A micro simulation analysis using VISSIM and its user application model ComInterface was applied. This study checked that this model could calculate the signal timings to minimize intersection delay considering saturation condition of traffic flow. In case studies using an isolated intersection, this study checked that this model could improve general vehicle delay of more over ten percentage as compared with equality reduction strategy of non-priority phases. Recently, transit priority facilities are spreading such as tram, BRT and median bus lane in Korea. This research has an important significance in that the proposed priority model is a new methodology that improve operation efficiency of signal intersection.
In recent decades, microscopic simulation models have become powerful tools to analyze traffic flow on highways and to assist the investigation of level of service. The existing microscopic simulation models simulate an individual vehicle's speed based on a constant free-flow speed dominantly specified by users and driver's behavior models reflecting vehicle interactions, such as car following and lane changing. They set a single free-flow speed for a single vehicle on a given link and neglect to consider the effects of highway design elements to it in their internal simulation. Due to this, the existing models are limitted to provide with identical simulation results on both curved and tangent sections of highways. This paper presents a model developed to estimate the change of free-flow speeds based on highway design elements. Nine neural network models were trained based on the field data collected from seven different freeway curve sections and three different locations at each section to capture the percent changes of free-flow speeds: 100 m upstream of the point of curve (PC) and the middle of the curve. The model employing seven highway design elements as its input variables was selected as the best : radius of curve, length of curve, superelevation, the number of lanes, grade variations, and the approaching free-flow speed on 100 m upstream of PC. Tests showed that the free-flow speeds estimated by the proposed model were statistically identical to the ones from the field at 95% confidence level at each three different locations described above. The root mean square errors at the starting and the middle of curve section were 6.68 and 10.06, and the R-squares at these points were 0.77 and 0.65, respectively. It was concluded from the study that the proposed model would be one of the potential tools introducing the effects of highway design elements to free-flow speeds in simulation.

This paper aims to estimate work zone base capacity by the number of lanes for urban freeway. To do this, data were collected from the field survey and the database system maintained by traffic control center, and analyzed with four different methods such as the average maximum observation flow rate, headway, regression analysis, and parameter inspection. The work zone base capacity for urban freeway is estimated based on the average maximum observation flow rate and headway method, which are more reliable methods compared to others. The average capacity is 1,650pcphpl when the design speed is 80km/h. The capacity of four lanes one-way work zones was about 1,700pcphpl, while one of 2 lanes one-way work zones was about 1,600pcphpl. The capacity reduction rates for each are 0.15 and 0.2, respectively. The smaller the number of lane is, the more base capacity is reduced. For verification of results, we estimate the capacity by simulation analysis using PARAMICS, and compare with analytical results by a statistical method. This research can be used for efficient and systemic management of work zone in the urban freeway.
Since rapidly increase of tunnel with increasing of expressway, the study on safety improvement of safety device at entrance of expressway tunnels is necessary. The existence of tunnel occurs more speed reduction than an upward slope by itself, the collision accident of tunnel entrance causes heavier damage than that of general accident on the road. So, many kinds of safety devices such as poly-ethylene barrier, guard-rail are placed on the road side. But these devices affect the drivers as an obstacle. Although there are various safety devices that are placed at tunnel entrance, this study is related to following 2-cases. One is that the poly-ethylene barrier is placed and the other is that a safety devices is not placed. The reason that these two cases are selected, is that poly-ethylene barrier is usually placed at many tunnel entrances and safety devices can affect the drivers as an obstacle. This study is related to the difference of right-hand side clearance between inside tunnel and outside tunnel, too. The average difference observed car speed and VDS(vehicle detect system) speed nearby the tunnel is analysed. Through the statistical analysis of the average difference, this study suggests an alternatives on safety improvement of safety devices at entrance of expressway tunnels. It is concluded that the small difference of right-hand side clearance is desirable to drivers when a poly-ethylene barrier is placed. And when the difference of right-hand side clearance is large, no safety devices is desirable, and when the difference of right-hand side clearance is small, poly-ethylene barrier should be placed to improve safety.
Exclusive median bus lanes were installed to mitigate congestions on urban traffic networks. However, capacity analysis of signalized intersections having exclusive median bus lanes have not been provided in current capacity analysis process(analyses). This study aims to develop a method of capacity analysis for lane groups consisting of only buses at the signalized intersections having exclusive median bus lanes. Finding basic saturation flow rates for buses is critical since the operational characteristics between automobiles and buses are fairly different. A total of 8 intersections in Seoul were chosen as study sites. Saturation headways, distances between bus-stop and stopline, and grades of each approach were measured at the sites. It was found that the basic saturation headway and the basic saturation flow rate of buses were 3.27 s/veh and 1,100pc/h/ln, respectively. Adjustment factor for upstream bus-stop locations was estimated with 0.50 and 0.75 when the distances between bus-stop and stopline are 20m and 70m, respectively. This study explains that bus saturation flow rates are decreased in half if the bus stop locates within 20 meters from stop lines.

Limit state design has been implemented in Korea since 2015; however, there exists no specification of lateral load determination on retaining wall due to the Korean standard traffic load on retaining wall's backfill surface. The lateral load from traffic depends on lane number, standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loadings is typically used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the Korean standard truck, based on the findings from analytical solutions using Bounessq's theory and numerical assessment using 2D finite element method. Consequently, it was found that the equivalent heights of soil from the Korean standard truck load were lower for lower retaining wall height.

The exclusive bus lanes in the Yeongdong Expressway were implemented in the Singal to Yeoju section in 2017, but the capacity of both exclusive bus lanes and general-purpose lanes of the Yeongdong Expressway decreased and the travel time increased, reducing it to the Singal to Deokpyeong section. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the efficiency of exclusive bus lanes to revitalize public transportation and improve environmental problems. This study calculated the willingness to pay and the social benefits of permission for Green cars to drive on exclusive bus lanes in Yeongdong Expressway. A survey was conducted on two groups of Green car users and Expressway users, and the willingness to pay was estimated using the CVM method. As a result, the average WTP of Green car users were estimated to be 218.7(won/km·person), and that of Expressway users were estimated to be approximately 235.5(won/km·person). The direct benefits were estimated to be approximately 7.9 billion won for Green car users, and 8.5 billion won for Expressway users in 2019. Finally, the value of time saving was estimated to be approximately 8.0 billion won.

The seriousness of a traffic accident appears relatively higher on the curve sections compared with the straight sections due to a change in speed caused by a change in the driver's sight. In particular, the visual distortion phenomenon, one of the dangerous factors taking place on the curve sections, appears different according to the road's geometric design. Although it is a genuinely principal design factor which should be necessarily considered in designing a road, the previous researches on establishing the design standards for it have been insufficiently conducted. As a result, the establishment of the road design standards for the curve sections considering the sight distortion phenomenon is desperately required. This research examined the previous researches on the driver's behaviors, the driver's sight characteristics and the perceived curve radius on the curve sections, and developed the theoretical model of perceived curve radius to which a mathematical technique is applied in consideration of the visual distortion phenomenon on the two-lane curve sections in a local area. In addition, after the theoretical visual distortion was calculated on the basis of the theoretical model of perceived curve radius, the range of error on the theoretical recognition radius model formula was verified through comparing it with the previous researches' experiential visual distortion level and analyzing both of them. As a result, it was observed that as the curve radius practically increases in the theoretical recognition curve radius, the range of error tends to go down, which reflects well the characteristics of the curve sections on the road. Based on this research, it is expected that this research will be helpful to eliminate the safety defects when designing the curve sections and contribute to develop the road design standards considering human factors in the future.

The user cost is an important analysis item which should be considered together with life-cycle of facility, administrator cost and discount rate in LCCA for efficient asset management of SOC facilities. Especially, a significant delay cost occurs often for users in the road field due to a work zone for cleaning and maintenance, and in such case, the administrator should consider the administrator cost as well as the user cost for more rational decision making. However, the user cost has not been considered in most decision making steps until recently and relevant studies also have not been carried out actively. In this study, the methodology to estimate the user cost and delay cost required in the decision making step using the traffic flow model and the direct benefit estimation model in the traffic facility investment evaluation guideline is suggested. And, the traffic flow model was estimated on 4 national highway sections where maintenance was actually carried out in 2014 using VISSIM and, the user cost and the delay cost were estimated based on the suggested methodology. The analysis result showed that the average user cost of $17,569,000KRW/km{\times}day$ occurred on Section A with approximately 30,000 AADT before a work zone occurred, and in case the first lane was blocked for maintenance, the delay cost of $10,193,000KRW/km{\times}day$ (158%) on average occurred additionally. The delay cost of $1,507,000KRW/km{\times}day$ (115%) and $1,985,000KRW/km{\times}day$ (119%) occurred on Sections B and D with approximately 20,000 AADT respectively and the delay cost of $262,000KRW/km{\times}day$ (105%) occurred on Section C with approximately 10,000 AADT. This result of this study was estimated based on the simulation of traffic flow model so that there is a limitation in its actual application. A study ot develop a highly appropriate model using actual observation data and improve the possibility to apply it through the verification using the simulation will be necessary in future.

Since the application of roundabouts by 2010 have been started, more than 350 roundabouts were installed in Korea. Recently the types of constructed roundabouts become various, and the intersection conditions for installing roundabouts were also various. However, there were some difficulties to install roundabouts around school zone due to safety problems. In this study, appropriate distance from adjacent signal crosswalks to roundabouts were estimated for securing pedestrian safety and operation efficiency around school zone. With the analyses, the minimum distance standard was suggested to obtain operational effectiveness of roundabout according to traffic volume, traffic flow, pedestrian green time and secures pedestrian safety and convenience. In this paper, average delay of roundabout as various length of distances between an adjacent crosswalk and a roundabout as different pedestrian signal times, traffic volumes, traffic flow rates were analyzed. Through this study, it was found that about four times of delay in a roundabout was generated if there was adjacent signal crosswalk. However if there is enough distance between an adjacent crosswalk and a roundabout, the value of increasing delay on roundabouts with adjacent a signalized crosswalk can be considerably reduced. Critical value of the distance between a roundabout and a signal crosswalk in case of roundabouts within 200-500 vehicle/hour/lane entry traffic flow, 20-40% of left turn traffic, and over 15 seconds pedestrian green time was about 50 meters. In conclusion, if there is minimum 40 meter distance from roundabouts, adjacent signal crosswalks can be installed and operated for students' safety around school zone.
