  • NIC@E is the software developed by authors. The program provides the noise level in outdoors due to various noise source types : construction machines including blast sources, railroad vehicles and automobiles. It operates in the Windows system. In this paper, a highway traffic noise has been evaluated using various types of approach : Ray-tracing method, NIRI method, JAS method. In order to compare the noise estimation performance for various models, a measurement is conducted on a 8 lane express highway at the distance of 25 m and 50 m from the lane. The result shows that the ray tracing and JAS model predict the measured value well within 2dB deviaton. The NIRI model, however, underestimates the highway noise level, as the distance between the source and receiver increases.

  • In this study a novel dynamic lane-level location referencing method(LLRM) was developed. The terminologies were defined and the prerequisites were suggested for the LLRM. Then, the logical and physical data formats were proposed, followed by the development of encoding and decoding algorithms. To conduct a performance test of the proposed method, two different high precision digital maps were prepared as well as an evaluation tool. The test results demonstrated that the proposed method works perfectly in terms of accuracy. The processing speed and the data size were found to be less efficient, but it is expected that the defect would be compensated soon enough due to the fast growing technology of ICT and computer hardwares.

  • A climbing lane is installed to separate low-speed traffic from high-speed traffic if drastic traffic capacity reduction is expected due to a large number of vehicles that slow down in the upward section. Existing studies on climbing lanes have focused on the designation, location of starting and ending points, and installation method of climbing lane with regard to road design standards. However, in terms of traffic operation, it was known that the climbing lanes cause traffic congestion due to the increase of traffic volumes. In this regard, this study aims to establish traffic operational guidance as to how much effects temporary closure of climbing lanes can have on traffic improvement according to the volume-capacity ratio, grade, and composition of trucks. A test section of simulated climbing lane was selected in Nakdong JC bound for Masan(136.9K~133.3K, 3.6km, 3.7%) on Jungbunaeryuk expressway to conduct VISSIM analyses, microscopic traffic simulation based on such control variables as traffic volume(v/c), grade and the trucks ratio. As a result of the analyses, it has been found that v/c and the ratio of trucks are the key variables for efficient traffic management of climbing lanes in order to relieve traffic congestion via climbing lane. If ratio of trucks are more than 50% and when v/c would be 0.8, both climbing lane would be closed and non-operated regardless of grade and ratio of trucks when v/c is 1.0. With the increased traffic due to a five-day work week system, continued peak hours during the weekday, increased and various patterns of congestion on expressway, this study would be expected to contribute to facilitating researches on flexible operational standards for road facilities.

  • One of the important functions of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is to classify vehicle types using a vision system. We propose a method using machine-learning algorithms for this classification problem with 3-D object model fitting. It is also necessary to detect road lanes from a fixed traffic surveillance camera in preparation for model fitting. We apply a background mask and line analysis algorithm based on statistical measures to Hough Transform (HT) in order to remove noise and false positive road lanes. The results show that this method is quite efficient in terms of quality.

  • The objective of this research is to monitor and control the vehicle motion in order to remove out the existing safety risk based upon the human-machine cooperative vehicle control. A new control method is proposed to control the steering wheel of the vehicle to keep the lane. Desired angle of the steering wheel to control the vehicle motion could be calculated based upon vehicle dynamics, current and estimated pose of the vehicle every sample steps. The vehicle pose and the road curvature were calculated by geometrically fusing sensor data from camera image, tachometer and steering wheel encoder though the Perception Net, where not only the state variables, but also the corresponding uncertainties were propagated in ...

  • In this paper, we propose a novel position accuracy enhancement method of a low-end GPS using digital map information. The latest digital map has various kinds of information on geographical features. The proposed method uses position information of lane marks among the geographical features. We define the position information of lane marks as the reference points. The position information of a low-end GPS acquired for a period of time is defined as the source points. In the proposed method, rotation and translation matrices between the reference and the source points are calculated by using an Iterative Closest Point(ICP) algorithm. The source points are transformed by the obtained rotation and translation matrices. Finally, the transformed source points are projected on the reference points. Through these processes, the position accuracy of a low-end GPS is ultimately enhanced. To verify the proposed method, the various real experimental results are presented.

  • With the rapid increase of vehicles, various traffic problems, e.g., car crashes, traffic congestions, etc, frequently occur in the road environment of the urban area. To overcome such traffic problems, intelligent transportation systems have been developed with a traffic flow analysis. The traffic flow, which can be estimated by the vehicle counting scheme, plays an important role to manage and control the urban traffic. In this paper, we propose a novel vehicle counting method based on predicted centers of each lane. Specifically, the centers of each lane are detected by using the accumulated movement of vehicles and its filtered responses. The number of vehicles, which pass through extracted centers, is counted by checking the closest trajectories of the corresponding vehicles. Various experimental results on road CCTV videos demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for vehicle counting.

  • Due to the spread of high-definition black boxes and the introduction of mobile applications such as 'Smart Citizens Report' and 'Safety Report', the number of public interest reports for violations of Traffic Law has increased rapidly, resulting in shortage of police personnel to handle them. In this paper, we describe the development of a system that can automatically detect lane violations which account for the largest proportion of public interest reporting videos for violations of traffic laws, using deep learning algorithms. In this study, a method for recognizing a vehicle and a solid line object using a YOLO model and a Lanenet model, a method for tracking an object individually using a deep sort algorithm, and a method for detecting lane change violations by recognizing the overlapping range of a vehicle object's bounding box and a solid line object are described. Using this system, it is expected that the shortage of police personnel in charge will be resolved.

  • This paper presents a method to optimize the bump steer characteristics (the change of toe angle with vertical wheel travel) with respect to hard points in the double wishbone front suspension of the four-wheel-drive vehicle using the design of experiment, multibody dynamics simulation, and optimum design program. Front and rear suspensions are modeled as the interconnection of rigid bodies by kinematic joints and force elements using DADS. The design variables with respect to the kinematic characteristics are obtained through the experimental design sensitivity analysis. An object function is defined as the area of absolute differences between the desired and experimental toe angle. By the design of experiment and regression analysis, the regression model function of bump steer characteristics is extracted. The design variables that make the toe angle optimized are selected using the optimum design program DOT. The lane change simulations and tests of the full vehicle models are implemented to evaluate the improvement of vehicle handling performances by the optimization of front bump steer characteristics. The results of the lane change simulations show that the vehicle with optimized bump steer has the weaker understeer tendency than the vehicle with initial bump steer.
