The uses of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been expanding in agriculture surveys, obtaining real time updates of dangerous facilities where human access is difficult, disaster monitoring, and 3D modeling. In reality, there is an upsurge in the application of UAVs in fields like, construction, infrastructure, imaging, surveying, surveillance and transportation. Especially, when the slope failure such as landslide occurs, the uses of UAVs are increasing. Since, the UAVs can fly in three dimensions, they are able to obtain spatial data in places where human access is nearly impossible. Despite of these advantages, however, the uses of UAVs are still limited during slope failure. In order to overcome these limitations, this study computes the soil volume change during slope failure through the computation technique using photogrammetric information obtained from UAV system. Through this study, it was found that photogrammetric information from UAV can be used to acquire information on amount of earthworks required for repair works when slope collapse occurs in mountainous areas, where human access in difficult.
The lapse of time may cause in the slope structure various deterioration phenomenon progresses in the ground of slope, and collapse due to deterioration of strength, resulting in a decrease in the service life. The approach to slope stability due to the ground deterioration is a different concept from the existing limit equilibrium analysis, which is limited to the physical characteristics and geometrical structure of ground. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of various literature studies related to the slope failure characteristics and behaviors to presented the optimal formulas for shear strength reduction, such as the exponential function, the logarithmic function and the inverse hyperbolic function. And then a case study was performed on cut slope of Gyeongbu High Speed Rail construction site along the Yangsan fault zone, where the slope failure of shale layer vulnerable to deterioration occurred. As a result, it was confirmed that landslide occurred due to reduction of shear strength by deterioration, as safety factor is approx. 1.0 at the time when the slope failure occurred. Based on the comprehensive case study, as a quantitative approach to the evaluation of slope stability due to deterioration of ground, finally we propose a method for evaluating slope stability with optimal strength reduction curves.
The factors of landslides depend on rainfall intensity, duration, and the characteristics of the soil slope. The conventional slope stability analysis has been carried out by assuming that the slope is saturated. But, a site slope consisting of unsaturated ground must be imitated and interpreted in order to explain a proper behavior of the slope due to rainfall. In this study, by using two major categories of soils in Korea, such as granite and gneiss weathered soils, landslide model test and numerical analysis have been compared with the difference of seepage and volumetric water content. In general, the permeability of gneiss weathered soil, which contains a lot of fines content, is slower than that of granite weathered soil. As a result, in extreme rainfall, numerical analysis can show results that can penetrate quickly, resulting in saturation or more dangerous collapse.
In this paper, cracks with different angles are prefabricated in rock specimens to study the fracture characteristics of rock based on CT images. The rock specimens are prepared for compression tests according to the standard recommended by ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics). The effects of different angles on rock mechanical properties and crack propagation fracture modes are analyzed. Then, based on the cohesive element method and CT images, the relationship between porosity and Young's modulus as well as the fracture property is explored by the numerical modelling. In the modelling, the distribution of Young's modulus is determined by the CT image through the field variable method. The results show that prefabricated cracks reduce the mechanical properties of rock. The closer the angles of the prefabricated crack is, the greater the Young's modulus of the rock sample is. The failure process of each specimen with prefabricated cracks is formed by the initiation and propagation of crack, and the angle of the prefabricated crack will affect the type of extended crack. As part of the numerical model proposed in this paper, the microstructure of rocks is reflected by CT images. The numerical results verify the effectiveness of the cohesive element method in the study of crack propagation for rock. The rock model in this paper can be used to predict engineering disasters such as collapse and landslide caused by rock fracture, which means that the methodology adopted in this paper is comprehensive and important to solve rock engineering problems.
As the diversity of disasters continues to increase, the concept of "complex disasters" has gained prominence in various policies and studies related to disaster management. However, there has been a certain limitation in the availability of the systematic statistics or data in advancing policies and research initiatives related to complex disasters. This study aims to analyze the macro-level characteristics of the complex disasters that have occurred domestically utilizing a 30-year span of a news data. Initially, we categorize the complex disasters into the three types: "Natural disaster-Natural disaster", "Natural disaster-Social disaster", and "Social disaster-Social disaster". As a result, the "natural diaster-social disaster" type is the most prevalent. It is noted that "natual disaster-natural disaster" type has increased significantly in recent 10 years (2011-2020). In terms of specific disaster types, "Storm and Flood", "Collapse", "Traffic Accident", "National Infrastructure Paralysis", and "Fire⋅Explosion" occur the most in conjunction with other disasters in a complex manner. It has been observed that the types of disasters co-ocuuring with others have become more diverse over time. Parcicularly, in recent 10 years (2011-2020), in addition to the aforementioned five types, "Heat Wave", "Heavy Snowfall⋅Cold Wave", "Earthquake", "Chemical Accident", "Infectious Disease", "Forest Fire", "Air Pollution", "Drought", and "Landslide" have been notable for their frequent co-occurrence with other disasters. These findings through the statistical analysis of the complex disasters using long-term news data are expected to serve as crucial data for future policy development and research on complex disaster management.

This study was conducted to obtain basic data that could help prevent damage caused by slow-moving landslides (land-creep). Specifically, the geological, topographic, and physical characteristics of land-creep were analyzed in Jiphyeon-myeon, Jinju-si. The first and second analyzed land-creeps occurred in 1982 and 2019, respectively. The area damaged in the second land-creep was about 11.5-fold larger than that damaged in the first land-creep. The dominant constituent rock in the land-creep area was sedimentary rock, which seems to be weakly resistant to weathering. The areas that collapsed due to land-creep were related to the presence of separated rocks between the bedding plane in the estimated activity surface over the slope direction and the vertically developed joint surface. Thus, surface water and soil debris were introduced through the gaps of separated rocks. Additionally, the areas collapsed due to the combination of the bedding plane and joint surface shale and sandstone showed an onion structure of weathered outcrop from the edge to inner part caused by weathering from ground water. Consequently, core stones were formed. The study area was a typical area of land-creep in a mountain caused by ground water. Land-creep was classified into convex areas of colluvial land-creep. The landslide-risk rating in the study area was classified into three and five classes. The flow of ground water moved to the northeast and coincided with the direction of the collapse. Soil bulk density in the collapsed area was lower than that in ridge area, which was rarely affected by land-creep. Thus, soil bulk density was affected by the soil disturbance in the collapsed area.

In the event of a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake, typhoon, landslide, and building collapse, the disaster situation awareness and timely disaster information sharing play a key role in the disaster response and decision-making stages for disaster management, such as disaster site control and evacuation of residents. In this paper, an exited field investigation system of NDMI (National Disaster Management Research Institute) was enhanced with an LTE-VPN- based wireless communication system to provide an effective on-site response in an urgent disaster situation and share observation data or analysis information acquired at the disaster fields in real-time. The required performance of wireless communication for the disaster field investigation system was then analyzed and evaluated. The experimental result for field data transmission performance of an advanced wireless communication investigation system showed that the UDP transmission performance of at least 4.1Mbps is required to ensure a seamless video conference system between disaster sites. In addition, a wireless communication bandwidth of approximately 10 Mbps should be guaranteed to smoothly share the communication and field data between the survey equipment currently mounted on the survey vehicle.
There are many mountains in Korean Peninsula, and those used for the construction of roads and railways sectors are forming slopes. Slope collapse occurs with falling rocks and landslide because of the relaxation of the thawing rocks. The heavy rain in summer can also significantly contribute to the process, and abnormal climate change is much more influential than before. Therefore, rockfall-related accidents in rainy season are easily accessible in media every year. There has been a lot of research on application of strengthening compensation of the sections in order to minimize casualties and property damage. Rockfall Protection Net, however, has not been focused on much in the field yet. This study highlights the need of Rockfall Protection Net, since it can segregate the falling rocks inside the net relatively safely. Although there has been a little doubt about the effectiveness of rockfall protection facilities, it is obvious that relevant studies dealing with the solidity of the net are necessary for the rockfall protection net to be capable of supporting rockfall energies. As a result, Expanded metal strength is much more durable compared to the PVC coating net, and it is regarded as an excellent alternative material for the Rockfall Protection Net. In this study, the applicability of Expanded Metal as the alternative of Rockfall Protection Net is verified experimentally.
Recently, irregular torrential rainfall have frequently occurred due to abnormal climate, and landslide damage is increasing. In Korea, more than 70% of the total land is mountainous areas, appropriate measures are needed to prevent landslides by heavy rainfall. When improved soil is applied to the surface of the slope, it is possible to suppress an increase in groundwater level due to rainfall penetration and secure stability of the slope. In this study, the appropriate depth of improved soil that can confirm the increase in groundwater level and secure stability by applying improved soil to the weathered soil slope was studied. A total of three cases were analyzed for the slope of the cross-section: standard slope for weathered soil (1:1.5, 1:1.8, and 1:2.0). For rainfall conditions, referring to the regional frequency probability rainfall provided by the Water resource Management Information System, the increase in groundwater level by stage was confirmed by assuming a 500-year frequency precipitation maximum duration of 48 hours. As a result of the study, in the case of natural slopes, the slope was completely saturated before 48 hours the rainfall duration, and there was a possibility of collapse. the improvement depth in the slope of 1:1.5 was appropriate for more than 1m from the surface regardless of the rainfall duration, and in the the slope of 1:1.8 was appropriate of 1m for more than 36 hours. in the slope of 1:2.0, it was appropriate for that safety when improved soil of 0.5m for rainfall duration 48 hours or more.
On September 3rd 2017, strong artificial seismic signals from North Korea were detected in KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) seismic network. The location of the epicenter was estimated to be Punggye-ri nuclear test site and it was the most powerful to date. The event was not studied well due to accessibility and geodetic measurements. Therefore, we used remote sensing data to analyze surface changes around Mt. Mantap area. First of all, we tried to detect surface deformation using InSAR method with Advanced Land Observation Satellite-2 (ALOS-2). Even though ALOS-2 data used L-band long wavelength, it was not working well for this particular case because of decorrelation on interferogram. The main reason would be large deformation near the Mt. Mantap area. To overcome this limitation of decorrelation, we applied offset tracking method to measure deformation. However, this method is affected by window kernel size. So we applied various window sizes from 32 to 224 in 16 steps. We could retrieve 2D surface deformation of about 3 m in maximum in the west side of Mt. Mantap. Second, we used Pleiadas-A/B high resolution satellite optical images which were acquired before and after the 6th nuclear test. We detected widespread surface damage around the top of Mt. Mantap such as landslide and suspected collapse area. This phenomenon may be caused by a very strong underground nuclear explosion test. High-resolution satellite images could be used to analyze non-accessible area.
