  • The purposes of this study are two folds: a) to introduce conjoint choice model to research the choice behavior of theme park users, and b) to suggest the strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of theme parks. The major four theme parks in Seoul metropolitan areas were selected as study areas. A leading polling agency was employed to select 432 respondents by probability sampling and to conduct face-to-face interview. Both alternative generating and choice set generating fractional factorial design were conducted simultaneously to meet the necessary and sufficient conditions for calibration of the conjoint choice model. Dummy coding was used to represent the attribute levels, and the alternative-specific model was calibrated. The goodness-of-fit of the model was quite satisfactory($\rho$$^2$=0.47950), and most parameters values had to expected sign and magnitude. Car was preferred transport mode to shuttle bus for visiting theme parks ; however the most ideal attribute levels only were estimated significantly. Most attribute levels of shuttle bus were estimated significantly except the Dream Land, which is the least attractive park among study areas. Simulation results showed that the shuttle bus was a mode worth providing to switch the current car dominant visiting pattern of theme parks, which will be one the effective strategies to attract more patrons, especially for potential users adjacent to parks. Several ideals were suggested for future researches, in terms of utilization of more general utility function and new base alternative, and inclusion of more salient attributes such as constraints in the model.

  • This study intends to analyze the structural relationships among the servicescape of theme park, the affective image and the place dependence of visitors, one of the most important factors of place attachment. For this purpose, this study selects Lotte World in Seoul as a study site and conducts a questionnaire survey focused on visitors who visited the site previously. The results of an exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation method show that esthetics and amenity factors among servicescape of theme park affect the attractiveness and comfortableness of the affective image of visitors positively, and two factors of visitors' affective image also affect the their place dependence positively. Tourism planners or landscape designers can consider these useful servicescape elements of theme park as important planning and managing factors in order to improve the images of theme parks and the level of place attachment.

  • This study was carried out to suggest method which can be used to improve competitive power of theme parks. The characteristics of Hybrid Conjoint Analysis were described and its usefulness for identification of specific types of service theme parks have to provide was tested "Lotte World, " "Seoul land," and "farmland" were selected as study areas, and .7 attributes with 3 levels were utilized for analyses. Master design with 81 profiles was constructed to meet the requirement of ′Compromise Plan 1,′and data was collected by in-personal interviews on the study areas. Respondents were grouped by cluster analysis, and their characteristics were analyzed by discriminant analysis. Then, part-worth of each attribute . was estimated by stagewise estimation model Calibrated model of each group did not show part-worths of attributes clearly because both main effects and 2-way interaction effects were included in the models. Therefore, calibrated models′ coefficients were used to calculate utilities of all possible combinations of attributes levels. The results showed that managers of theme parks have several options for providing a new service: the combination of attribute levels with the highest utility is they however, they can choose the other combinations with next highest utlities is they can not afford it. Several suggestions were described to cope with the problems when Hybrid Conjoint Analysis is applied to landscape architectural study.

  • Service quality is defined as the perceived difference between performed service and expected service. In this paper, theme park service quality is conceptualized in relation to consumer's total satisfaction on theme park visitation. A 20-item scale was constructed to measure Theme Park Service Quality. The following four steps were employed in developing the service quality measure: 1)identification of service quality dimensions, 2)development of scales from a set of items describing the dimensions, 3)empirical verification of the scale's construct validity which refers to dimensionality, convergent validity, and nomological validity, and 4)confirmation of the utility. The scale was found to be an empirically valid and reliable evaluation tool for service quality enhancement. In addition, the scale would be an useful criterion for market segmentation and positioning.

  • The role of emotional responses is an important subject of study in consumer behavior. Although the perceived performance and satisfaction related emotions have been studied with increasing quantities in leisure studies or fields of outdoor recreation and tourism, issues concerning the appropriate way to measure these emotional responses remains unresolved. This article reviews the emotion measuring scales, and testify the usefulness of PAD scale based upon 349 questionnaires by users of Phoenix Park(Ski Resort) and Seoul Land(Theme Park) in Korea. It was found that, users' emotional response was closely related with satisfaction in Phoenix Park(Ski Resort); however, users' perceived performance was closely related with satisfaction in Seoul Land (Theme Park). This article argues that the meanings of these findings is due to different characteristics of consumption typology between ski resort and theme park. In conclusion, users' emotional experience may be more useful in understanding skiing activities and in formulating management strategies for ski resorts than theme parks.

  • There are plenty of ecological and traditional resources around Wandong and the Hwangryong-River district, and so the purpose of this development plan is to preserve ecological resources and traditional culture, and to utilize potential value of recreation in this site. Two major concepts are established in this plan one is “Green-Tourism”, the other is “Blue-Recreation”. In this development plan “Green-Tourism” means the effective tourism using ecological and traditional resources, while “Blue-Recreation” means the active tourism using waterfront and cultural facilities. The concept of “Green-Tourism” is applied to the Wangdong area, which is comprised of 6 theme zones. The concept of “Blue-Recreation” is applied to the Hwangryong-River area, which is composed of 4 theme zones. In total, 10 theme zones are planned according to characteristics found in the regional surroundings and cultural facilities of each zone.

  • This study explored the effects of expectatioin, performance, and disconfirmatoni on satisfaction of theme park users. Everland was chosen as the study area, and 260 users were selected by the nonprobability sampling. In expectation disconfirmation paradigm, expectation should be measured before purchase, and performance, disconfirmation and satisfaction should be measured after purchase. An entrance survey was done to measure expectation, and an exit survey to measure performance, disconfirmation, and satisfaction. Maximum likelihood method was used to estimate structural equation model by the LISREL 7.2. Performance had the most significant effect on satisfaction among three variables. The satisfaction of theme park users depends largely on it, therefore, the consideration of visitors' performance should e essential for managers.

  • This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the Incheon-city Southern Region Integrated Disposal Treatment Facility. The site is located in Dongchun-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. The main design concepts are as follows: First, considering connection of the site with surrounding water, inner sea is designed as an environmentally friendly place and as a leisure-sports theme park in which several sports facilities and relaxing places are arranged. It is also designed for everyone: people of all ages, disabled, workers, visitors and local residents. The design was processed on the basis of survey, analysis of surrounding competing facilities and SWOT analysis. Second, the ecological planting model was developed by analyzing the natural vegetation map in the surrounding area and planted vegetation types in the seaside reclamation area. The model was then applied to the ecological community, park area and roadside trees, so as to harmonize with the local habitat. Third, the project is intended to launch private capital for managing the sports park and golf course. This will enable a entrepreneur to make flexible plans for golf training field that is expected to yield a good financial return. It is expected that this design would serve the local residents as a symbolic, environmentally friendly leisure-sports theme park.

  • This study aimed to plan a distinctive apple theme park, thereby specializing the nationwide brand of Cheongsong apple. Detailed objectives included: to establish the best possible environments in Korea to taste and appreciate apple and enjoy the Cheongsong Apple Festival; to identify and foster natural, cultural and social resources in the clean environment of Cheongsong; to clusterize research and production infrastructures for strengthening local competitiveness; and to develop a hub for the vitalization of the region where visitors and locals can mutually prosper. The study was multi-phased. The first stage included basic surveys such as local status and environment analysis and similar case studies, and the second stage was to review the appropriateness of theme selection, develop basic principles and strategies for development goals and review and incorporate project details. And the third stage aimed to develop a comprehensive plan from spatial plans and program plans and suggest plans to vitalize the operation of the park. The dimension of the subject site was $180,150m^2$, which was divided into four areas, in consideration of the land use and the environmental characteristics of the resources, for developing a land use scheme. The four areas were named: the apple-theme cultual area; the agricultural culture experience area; the plaza for exchange and harmony; and the plaza for natural observation. This study has significance in that it can serve as a case to develop farm theme parks, and as a case of appropriate development of programs to identify amenity resources with a focus on the existing resources and in consideration of local characteristics.
