The Seoul Housing Corporation pronounced a design competition for Eunpyeng New Town District 2 in March of 2005. The authors collaborated on this design and won rot prize. Design guidelines of this competition were to make environmentally sustainable design, to develop as a resort site and cultural place for everyday life of residents, to link with green fabric of the district, and to elevate positive image and identity of Eunpyeng New Town district by creating a attractive landscape. The authors developed design concept and strategy within the guidelines and site conditions. The environmental setting of this site was characterized by mountain to the rear of the site with a stream passing through the district and the front of the site. This is the most important condition for the location principle of residence in Fung Shui theory. Therefore, the schema of the design was introduced by Fung Shui and Chi of place. To evolve design concept, we reinterpret the Fung Shui and Chi in the site combining with modem landscape design strategy, so that good place making could bring about well-being life of residents. By doing that, design concept of the proposal evolved as follows: 'fullness of comfortable life', 'adaptation of nature', 'inspiration of natural force'. This design approach is critical reevaluation of regional characters employing modem strategy. It is a conscious strategy of critical regionalism as distinguished from the traditional site oriented approach. The following are some of the major features in the design: green network and water recycle system in the site, promenade of forest with the experience nature, link to community core, theme gardens with plants having strong fragrances, terrace gardens with different level of housing type, playgrounds and resting places with many types, human scale facilities for residents.

This study tried to understand an ambiguous urban landscape through a relational context. Gongpyeong district, an urban renewal area in Seoul, was selected as the site of the case study because traditional and modern styles coexist in this district. The research method and processes are summarized as follows. First, the district, which has both a redeveloped environment and an inherent environment, was divided into Yin & Yang structures. Next, an effort was made to grasp the fundamental relational characteristics(external relationships) of each type through three aspects: physical environment, activities, and meaning. As a result, Yin characteristics were found in the redeveloped environment which has predominantly Yang characteristics. In many cases, advertising, which is a Yang element, was missing in the redeveloped area. On the other hand, in the inherent environment which has Yin characteristics in general, shabby appearances were evident in aspects beyond advertising, and Yang elements, were found from the viewpoint of the theory of place. On the basis of these results, new dualistic frameworks with respect to the functions were re-structured, and complementary characteristics (internal relationship) based on topological aspects were analyzed. Unlike the monotonous appearances found in large scale environments, a variety of spatial characteristics were found in the various small scale environments. This explains that the dualistic coexistence has made a contribution to the complementary attributes of urban landscape. This study has the following ramifications. Much research of urban landscapes that has used western methodology which employs analytic aspects. As a methodology of urban landscape research this study introduced Iching, which tries to understand phenomena in a relational context. In addition, this study expects that the profound understanding of urban environments and the detailed relationship through this framework will suggest a new approach to urban planning, design and management related to future urban environments.
The purpose of this study is to analysis of disposition distance of city park for the plan of suitable arrangement of city park based on the date examining Daegu Metropolitan City. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The result of analysis of population density as the case of districts, it appeared highly in city center area which Seo-Gu district and Nam-Gu district besides Jung-Gu district. However, it apperared in a low Buk-Gu district, Dong-Gu district and Salseong-Gun. 2) The result of analysis of population density as the case of regions, it appeared very highly Joukjun-Dong of Dalseo-Gu district($31,554per/km^2$), Naedang-Dong of Seo-Gu district($29,922per/km^2$). However it appeared in a low Yeuga-Maen($85per/km^2$) and Gachang-Maen($94per/km^2$) of Dalseong-Gun. The regions where the population density is high have very low green space and live a lot of low income layer. 3) The result of analysis of disposition distance, in the case of children park, it appeared an intensive distribution in Dongcheon-Dong and Guam-Dong of Buk-Gu district, Whanggm-Dong and Dusan-Dong of Suseong-Gu district, Sangin-Dong and Yeongsan-Dong and Walsung-Dong of Dalseo-Gu district. however, it appeared in a low in Jung-Gu district. The case of urban park of the neighboring area, it appeared the most in Dalseo-Gu district except 2 parks in Jung-Gu district, the case of urban park of the walking area, it appeared in equality in city. 4) In conclusion, the area have high population density and lots of low income layer, is in out of disposition distance should be considered in first for city park plan.

After UNECD(United Nations Conference of Environment and Development) in 1992, ESSD (Environmental Sound and Sustainable Development) is an important concept of urban planning in Korea. The introducing environmental assessment system of urban planning and the district unit planning system were representative cases. In this process, Landchaftplanung(ecological landscape planning) was introduced from Germany. This study was executed for applying ecological landscape planning to Eunpyung New Town in Seoul city, and analyzing the problem to apply this system. The process of ecological landscape planning was followed to (1) the site survey, (2) the analysis and assessment of survey data, (3) the establishing ecological landscape planning. Three master architects participated in all investigations. The major fields of them were landscape architecture, architecture, and urban planning. Master Architects helped many aspects. In conclusion, ecological landscape planning was feasible to be applied to develop other New Town in Korea. However the mediation system is very weak, if different situations are confronted with ecological landscape plan and land use plan in the operative legal framework of Korea. Thus, the legislation of mediation system is necessary for an establishment of ecological landscape planning.

This study is based on the viewing characteristics of mountain landscapes. It investigates whether the current landscape management-related regulations are efficient in terms of the viewing characteristics of the mountain landscape against Bukhansan Mountain in which the conventional landscape management techniques were used. In addition, some viewing characteristics of mountain landscapes, such as distance from the view point to the target mountain, angle of elevation, altitude, gradient, have been analyzed and 3 cases of viewing condition have been simulated. The following results were obtained: i) Mountain landscapes can be managed up to 7~8 times of the mountain height with a $5{\sim}9^{\circ}$ of elevation angle. ii) In the Natural Landscape District which is situated on the hillside, it is reasonable to include altitude, gradient as criteria for regulation. iii) According to a simulation of the construction permit height by viewing distance, it was confirmed that buildings can be constructed up to 111.55m when viewing the 20% ridge, 150.75m when viewing the 50% ridge and 189.05m when viewing the 70% ridge. iv) The construction permit height varies depending on the landscape analysis method that is used and the application conditions. It is therefore unfair to apply height limit regulations to all buildings without considering the geographical features or viewing characteristics. v) It is unreasonable to apply 2~3 management techniques to the same area for landscape management. Therefore, we recommend the Focused Landscape Management Area based on the landscape master plan as a integrating mountain landscape management techniques.

The purpose of this research was to present characteristics for the classification of biotopes and classification method of biotopes as basic data for ecological landscape planning in Metropolitan Daegu. The results of this study were as follows. 1) The study identified fifteen characteristics for classification of biotopes. Ecological landscape characteristics were divided into structural and functional factors. There are six structural factors such an inclination, and nine functional factors such as temperature. 2) The study area was separated into sixty eight biotope types. For example, an industrial district was divided into two biotope types: a biotope type of an industrial district with abundant green space, and a biotope type of an industrial district with scarce green space. 3) In the result of cluster analysis using the average linkage method between groups, biotope groups were divided into fifteen clusters and biotope groups were divided into seven clusters. Each cluster was named according to the features of a descriptive statistics analysis. For example, cluster 8 was identified as a biotope type with an impermeable pavement rate of more than 90 percent and an afforestation rate under 10 percent. 4) Fifteen biotope groups were converted to land use patterns for remote application and utilization of urban biotope in city planning. Biotope groups of a building area beyond an intermediate floor with an afforestation rate under 20-30 percent was converted to a land use pattern such as a tall apartment complex or commercial district. When examining the characteristics that were established in this research, there was a limit to achieve the objective of grade-classification because of a lack of related basic data. The research of landscape ecological characteristics for the classification of biotopes could not be completed due to a lack of time and resources, thus the study of ecological landscape characteristics will be accomplished over time.

The aim of this study is to find out the ways of community landscape design in American garden city, Logan in Northern Utah. I had been surveyed historic homes and single units to take a dig how to keep and develope a good community landscape of the city in both the Historic District and residential area, researching of documents. City of Logan surveyed contains a remarkable landscape views of various historical house styles and contemporary single units based on traditional house styles out of central street. For they have been controled by Center Street National Historic District Design Standards and Logan Land Development Code with Logan General Plan. Logan community shows today a particular identity and harmonious landscape of residential area in a view point of old and new buildings. There are three results of the study as follows: First, the types of homes in Historic District are focused on Victorian style with Prairie homes which are unique American style, the Craftman that is revised as American home style, and vernacular style. Second, the historical houses have been controled by HPC since 1978 in order to keep the original buildings and landscape architecture, and the general single units by building code of the city in General Plan. Third, it must be citizen participation design to build up a beautiful landscape that Logan has maintained a safety garden city people hope to live in.

With their deity groves, Japanese Shinto shrines form unique green spaces. Further, many shrines are located between a settlement and the rural or natural environment. This location relates to the nature-worship of the Shinto tradition. However, when visiting present shrine precincts, it gives the impression that their original landscape location and green space is impaired by urban changes. This study focuses on the point how the scenic condition of district shrines at the fringe of Tokyo is challenged in the present, and presents an example of a successful preservation in the urban area. The key point of such preservation is that it goes beyond the shrine precinct itself. If there still exists a natural or beautiful scenery next to a shrine with some distinct historical or religious relationship, both shrine and scenery should be preserved together.

For the establishment of district planning in natural parks, vegetationin the most significant point. Consequently, district plan should be made basically under phytosociological investigations. The purpose of this paper is to conserve vegetation in the district planning at natural park(Nam Han San Sung provincial natural park). The result of vegetation survey are as follows : As an actual vegetation 13 communities are recognized. Those are Quercus mongolica-Carpinus laxiflora community, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron schlippenbachii community, Quercus serrate community, Betula platyphylla var. Japonica community, Quercus dentata community, Quercus mongolica-Pnuus densiflora community, Quercus acutissima community, Robinia pseudo-acacia community, Alnus hirsuta community, Castanea crenata community, Quercus variabilis community, Pinus densiflora community, Pinus rigida community, weed community on cultivated land(Form land), Larix leptolepis reforested land, cut over area and non-vegetation area. The grade of vegetation naturalness was divided into five degrees by characteristics of actual vegetation. I intended to make zoning plan for protection of vegetation with a special attention to the grade of vegetation naturalness and I discussed the necessity of the improvement of existing district plan. District plan was proposed as Fig. 5.

The rebuilding or redevelopment of buildings in the Readjustment Project District is generally built high-rise buildings. It sometimes makes our residential area to be uniform in height and disharmony with surrounding houses and infrastructure. Then this research examines the landscape effects of the height of buildings built using landscape simulation on hillside and level ground. We suggested that it was desirable for a land readjustment project district to be managed by District Plan and Development Density Controlled Area. In addition, a consideration for the introduction of Average Floors is needed to mitigate the uniform and disharmony with surroundings.
