  • The purpose of this study is to obtain land classification map by using remotely sensed data; Landsat TM and SPOT panchromatic, and to compare their results with statistical data and digitized coverage from topographic paper map. The classification was conducted by maximum likelihood method with training sets. The best result was obtained from the Landsat TM merged by SPOT Panchromatic, that is, similar with statistical data. This is caused by setting more precise training sets with the enhanced spatial resolution by using SPOT Panchromatic. The classified map may be useful as a fundamental data to estimate pollutant load in regional scale of agricultural watershed.

  • This study confirmed the usefulness of short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) in the discrimination and classification of evergreen forest types. A forested area near Hisayama and Sasaguri in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, served as the study area. Warm-temperate forest vegetation dominates the study site vegetation. Coniferous plantation forest, natural broad-leaved forest, and bamboo forest were analyzed using LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR remote sensing data. Samples were extracted for the three forest types, and reflectance factors were compared for each band. Kappa coefficients of various band combinations were also compared by classification accuracy. For the LANDSAT5/TM data observed in April, October, and November, Bands 5 and 7 showed significant differences between bamboo, broad-leaved, and coniferous forests. The same significant difference was not recognized in the visible or near-infrared regions. Classification accuracy, determined by supervised classification, indicated distinct improvements in band combinations with SWIR, as compared to those without SWIR. Similar results were found for both LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR data. This study identified obvious advantages in using SWIR data in forest-type discrimination and classification.

  • To explore submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the coastal zone of Jeju Island, the water quality analysis with seasonal remotely sensed data was carried out. If the groundwater is directly discharged into the ocean, the water quality of coastal zone is influenced. Therefore sea surface temperature (SST), the transparency, and Chlorophyll-a's concentration were analyzed for extracting the anomaly zone related with SGD using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data acquired on April, August, and December. Then the spatial characteristics of springs, which located along the coastal area, were analyzed by CIS data integration based on Fuzzy logic. The integration results were compared with the anomaly zone extracted from Landsat TM data, and it is considered that springs has close relationship with SGD.

  • This study investigates to detect Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and land cover change after tide embankment construction using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) Thermal Infrared (TIR) band data at Shihwa Lake and surrounding area. SST measurement is important for studies of both the structure of the ocean and as the thermal boundary between the ocean and the atmosphere. Since 1970s, the derivation of SST by satellite remote sensing (RS) has been applied to earth surface using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat TM. However, AVHRR has restriction in deriving SST in the area whose shoreline is complicated like western coast in South Korea because of coarse spatial resolution. The TIR band of TM images can be used to detect SST change whose shoreline is complicated and narrow like the study site. Thus, multi-temporal TM images were used for SST change detection in this study.

  • The study analyze Conifer and Hardwood area and their distribution to seek an efficient survey for Experimental Forest of Kangwon National University using Landsat-5 TM data. Through forest cover types, we try to study on the possibility to use Satellite Data. development of Satellite Interpretation Skill and Digital Mapping Method. As analysis tools we use IMAGINE 8.3 and ArcView 3.0 software. The result showed that Hardwood took approximately 73%, 2,224ha of the total 3,058ha and Conifer takes 27%, 832ha.

  • The main object of this study is to prove the effectiveness of Landsat data in detecting the stressed areas in forest by extracting these areas. And also to choose the effective bands for this type of survey and to reduce the effect of shadow in forest to improve the accuracy of classification are the other objects. In this study Landsat-5 TM data is used and image processing techniques such as spatial filtering and ratio are taken to reduce the effect of shadow and to improve the classification accuracy. As a result following conclusions are obtained. First, Landsat TM data is useful to detect the stressed areas in forest. Second, when detecting the stressed area, band 4 and 5 are the most effective. Third, spatial filtering and ratio are useful to reudce the effect of shadow and improve the classification accuracy. Especially, ratio has great effect on improving the classification accuracy between forest and other areas.

  • The objective of this study is to conduct land cover classification respectively using Landsat TM data collected on Oct., 1985 and KOMPSAT-1 EOC data collected on Jan., 2000 covering Gumi city, Gyeongbuk Province and to detect urban change by comparing between both land cover maps. Multispectral images of Landsat TM have spatial resolution of 30m are well known as useful data for extracting information related to landcover, vegetation classification, urban growth analysis and so forth. In contrast, as KOMPSAT-1 EOC collects panchromatic images with relatively high spatial resolution of 6.6m. We try to analyze how accurate landcover classification result is able to be derived from the panchromatic images. As the results of the study, the KOMPSAT EOC data with high resolution greater than 4 times showed higher classification degree than Landsat TM data. It was ascertained that the built-up region was extended by three to four times in the last 15 years between 1985 and 2000. In the contrast, it was shown that the forest region was decreased by 15% to 27% and the grass region including agricultural region was decreased by 28% to 45%.

  • In the present investigation, an estimation of the growth of heat island development of Tokyo metropolis which accounts nearly 100 sq. km of areal spread has been carried out. Band 6 data of LANDSAT TM (Thematic Mapper) data acquired on August 1984 and 1994 have been used for estimating the expansion of the heat island development. Since the vegetation decrease is usually associated with the heat island development, a ratio of green covering has also been assessed using TM data. In order to establish the relationship with the air temperature, AMeDAS(Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System) data have been correlated.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to use Landsat TM data for geological mapping and minieralized area detection. The study was carried out in Kyongju-Pohang area where toseki and bentonite mines are distributed. Rock samples of 18 granites, andesites, toseki, betonites, sedimentary rocks and altered rocks in the study area were collected for the study. The radiometric measurtment of the rock samples were carried out with a radiometer in the laboratory and in the field. The Landsat TM bands 2,3,4,5,7 were used for the measurement. The radiometric characteristics of the sample were mainly processed by the principal component analysis. It was found that the pricipal component analysis of the radiometric characteristics of geologic materials is very useful for the detection of the alteration of rocks and grade of mineral contents. It is expected that the technique can be used in the future for the efficient exploration of minerals in this country and abroad.
