Recently, the effective use of closed waste landfill nearby urban areas has been demanded, because of the lack of the usable land. However, the reuse of closed landfill is needed an adequate stabilization of liner system. But most of these places are consisted of steep slope and hence it is necessary to use the geosynthetics liners in there. Liner system of waste landfills is an important facility which prevents leachate outgoing from the landfills and also groundwater infiltrating from surroundings into the landfills. During the waste disposal stage, differential settlement and tensile stress of the geosynthetic materials could occur due to impact load of trucks and dozers, waste loads and weak foundation soils. In this study, the tensile strength and tracer test were performed to evaluate the stability of geomembrane liner systems. Based on the tensile strength test result of in-situ geomembrane sample, the yield tensile strength maintain the suitable strength by specification and current law. However, according to the tracer test, the damage of geomembrane liner was detected on sanitary landfill section.
Although clay can sorb significant amounts of inorganic contaminants from soils and wastewater, the hydration of exchangeable cations in clay minerals makes it hydrophilic at the clay mineral surfaces and interlayers. Thus, natural clays are often ineffective in complexing and stabilizing toxic organic contaminants in soils and groundwater environment. But, substituting these hydrated cations with cationic surfactant such as QAC(Quaternary ammonium Compound) can change the natural clay from hydrophilic to hydropobic. Furthermore functionalized organoclay can act as a powerful dual function sorbent for both toxic metals and organic compounds. It also can be used as landfill clay liners, slurry walls, nano-composite materials, petroleum tank farms, waste treatment, and filter systems. To use this modified clay minerals effectively, it is required to understand the fundamental chemistry of organoclay, synthetic procedures, its engineering application, bioavailability of sorbed ion-clay complex, and potential risk of organoclay. In this review, we investigate the use, application and historical background of the organoclay in remediation technology. The state-of-the-art of organoclay research is also discussed. Finally, we suggest some future implications of organoclay in environmental research.
The effectiveness of quicklime-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) in immobilizing lead (Pb) was assessed by performing semi-dynamic leaching tests (ANS16.1). In order to simulate landfill leaching conditions, the ANS 16.1 test was modified by using 0.014 N acetic acid (pH = 3.25) instead of distilled water. Artificial soil samples as well as field soil samples contaminated with Pb were tested. The effectiveness of quicklime treatment was evaluated by determining diffusion coefficients ($D_e$) and leachability indices (LX). A model developed by de Groot and van der Sloat was used to elucidate the controlling Pb leaching mechanisms. Overall, upon quicklime treatment Pb leachability was significantly reduced in a]l of the samples tested. The mean LX values were higher than 9 for an artificial soil sample containing 30% kaolinite treated with 10% quicklime and for a field soil sample treated with 10% quicklime, which suggests that S/S treated soils can be considered acceptable for "controlled utilization". Moreover, quicklime treatment was more effective in artificially contaminated soil with high kaolinite content (30%), indicating the amount of clay plays an important role in the success of the treatment. The controlling Pb leaching mechanism was found to be diffusion, in all quicklime treated samples.
The authors selected the modified soil method, and then performed the geotechnical and environmental laboratory test, and evaluated whether the modified soil liner could be accepted as a barrier layer in landfill. Unlike the results of the natural soil(CL), those of the hydraulic conductivity test of stabilized soil met the standard value. According to these results, the optimal mixing ratio of a mixture(cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent) was 90 : 60 : 1 with mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, and it was possible to use poor quality bentonite. B\circled2 because of a little difference from results with high quality bentonite. B\circled1. The Cation Exchange Capacity(CEC) of the modified soil was increased about 1.5 times compared with the natural soil; however. the change of CEC with a sort of additives was not detected. In order to observe the change of the chemical components and crystal structures, the natural and the modified soils with the sorts of additives were measured by the XRF(X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometer) and SEM, but there was no significant change. The artificial leachate with the heavy meals ($Pb^{2+}$ , $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$ Zn$^{2+}$ 100mg/L) was passed through the natural soil and modified soils in columns. In the natural soil, Cd$^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were identified, simultaneously the pH of outflow was lower, and then came to the breakthrough point. The removal efficiency of the natural soil was showed in order of following : $Pb^{2+}$ ≒$Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ On the other hand, modified soils were not showed the breakthrough condition like the result of the natural soil. The modified soil with the lower quality bentonite, B\circled2(column3) was more stable with respect to chemical attack than that with the higher bentonite, B\circled1(column2) because the change range of outflow pH in columns was less than that of outflow pH in column2. In addition, the case of adding the stabilizing agent(column4) was markedly showed the phenomena.ena.

Methanotrophic communities from freshwater wetland (FW), seawater wetland (SW), forest (FS), and landfill soils (LS) around Seoul of South Korea, were characterized using comparative sequence analyses of clone libraries. Proportions of Methylocaldum, Methlyococcus and Methylosinus were found to be greater in FW and SW, while Methylobacter and Methylomonas were more notable in FS and Methylocystis and Methylomicrobium more prominent in LS. Lag periods behind the initiation of methane oxidation significantly varied amongst the soils. Methane oxidation rates were greater in $FW{\geq}LS{\geq}SW>FS$ (p<0.05). Thus, the environmental setting is a significant factor influencing the communities and capabilities of methanotrophs.
This study was carried out to evaluate the recycled waste soils from construction site for using vegetation media. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, $Cr^{6+}$, As, Hg, Cu, Cn, organic P, TCE, and PCE were measured at recycled soil piles of an industrial waste treating company in the Metropolitan landfill area. The concentrations of polluted materials did not exceed to the standard critical levels of soil pollution in all analyzed items. The results suggested a high potential of recycling of the wastes soils for vegetation soil media. However, Cd and $Cr^{6+}$ almost reached the critical levels by the time of sampling, and it is necessary to develop a skill to lower concentrations of those pollutants. In the turfgrass test, the recycled soil did show an encouraging result as vegetation media in the early growth stage of perennial ryegrass.
Indiscriminate disposal of waste and citation of open dumpsites are some of the key factors affecting the various soil geotechnical properties. Atterberg limit and consolidation tests were conducted to determine the effects of two open waste dumpsites (Uselu Market and New Benin) on geotechnical properties of their underlying soils. Soil sample collected from Uselu Market dumpsite in Benin City metropolis showed slightly lower hydraulic conductivity (K) of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ with plasticity index of 18.53% compared to sample collected 1.6 m from the same dumpsite which had high K value of $2.42{\times}10^{-3}$ with plasticity index of 6.9%. Soil sample collected from New Benin dumpsite in Benin City metropolis showed slightly lower K of $1.45{\times}10^{-6}$ with plasticity index of 13.8% than sample collected 1.6 m from the same dumpsite which had high K value of $2.14{\times}10^{-2}$ with plasticity index of 6.0%. X-ray florescent analyser (X-MET 7000) and direct soil pH meter were used to determine the composition of the aforementioned soil samples. The result of samples collected from both dumpsites indicated a low hydraulic conductivity compared to samples collected 1.6 m from both dumpsites. Also, the chemical composition and pH of both dumpsite underlying soils indicated high level of soil contaminants with pH of 3.3 and 3.5 which is very acidic unlike pH of other samples which were in the neutral range (6.8-7.1). Hence, a liner is recommended for all dumpsites or engineered landfill systems to mitigate against the challenges associated with open waste dumping system in the environment.
Most of the industrial complexes and housing complexes in Busan and Gyeongnam were constructed by developing mountainous areas, except for some landfill areas. During the development process, the surplus soil for site development was mainly used as the embankment material. In the field, however, even if the material of the material changes during the embankment work for site development, for convenience reasons such as construction period and site conditions, the material property test and compaction test are not additionally conducted for the embankment material, and quality control is conducted. In this study, physical property tests and compaction tests were conducted on surplus soils in mountainous areas in Busan, GyungNam Province and then regression analysis was performed on the data. In addition, a comparative analysis was conducted along with existing studies in Korea. The surplus soils at the sites in Busan and Gyeongnam were mainly weathered soils of granites, and were classified into clayey sand (SC) and silty sand (SM). As a result of regression analysis of the compaction characteristics according to the content of coarse and fine soils, the correlation between them was very high. Using the relational formula as a result of this study, it will be very useful for compaction management of the surplus soils in the field.

When microorganism is injected into porous medium such as soils, biomass retained in the pore. Bacteria within these microcolonies produced large amounts of exopolysaccharides and formed a plugging biofilm. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation, which make hydraulic conductivity reduced and friction rate between soil aggregates increased. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrate and nutrient. Also, pore sand of before and after biofilm formation compared with scanning electron microscopy. Hydraulic conductivity of Sand and Poorly Graded Sand was decreased approximately 1/10∼1/100 after biomass inoculation and cultivation. Biofilm attached on soil aggregates is resistant to acidic or basic condition.
In this study, soil seed and bud bank analysis were performed to abbess the mass of potential vegetation in soils less than 1 year old after covered and estimate the amount of seed bank transport through construction in urban area. The ratio of exotic species number to total species number in study sites and the landfill control site was 0.29 and 0.39, respectively. All plots pooled, mean species number and total mean seedling density per $\m^2$ in the top 10 cm of soil was 11$\pm$0 (average$\pm$S.E.) and 8037$\pm$221.Total plant seeds by artificial soil trasnsfer were estimated to be 53 thousand million $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in 10 cm soil depth. It reveals that soil transfer accelerates seeds and vegetation movement and makes urban vegetation mixed and common.
