Shear lag phenomenon has long been considered in numerous structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have now no longer proposed any unique equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in bolted connections for angles in general. It is noticeable that, however, codes used in this case are largely conservative and need to be amended. A parametric study consisting of 27 angle sections with equal legs and different with bolted connections was performed to investigate the effects of shear lag on the ultimate tensile capacity of angle members. The main parameters were: steel grade, connection length and eccentricity from the center of the plate, as well as the number of rows of bolts parallel to the applied force. The test results were compared with the predictions of the classical 1-x/l law proposed by Mons and Chesen to investigate its application to quantify the effect of shear lag. A parametric study was performed using valid FE models that cover a wide range of parameters. Finally, based on the numerical results, design considerations were proposed to quantify the effect of shear lag on the ultimate tensile capacity of the tensile members.
In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element model is established to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics of rotor blade using a finite element analysis. Six natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated by computer simulation. The first three flapping modal frequencies, the first two lead-lag modal frequencies, and the first feathering modal frequency are validated through comparison with the modal test results of the fixed rotor blade. The computer simulation results are found in good agreement with experimentally measured natural frequencies. The important results are obtained as follows: (1) Natural frequencies are changed due to the variation of rotational speed and fiber angle of rotor blade, (2) Weak coupling between flapping mode shape and lead-lag mode shape are detected, (3) Centrifugal force has more effect on flapping modal frequency than lead-lag modal frequency.
Purpose: To investigate the short term result of the first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis for treating the hallux valgus deformity of rheumatoid arthritis, using a lag screw and dorsal mini-plate. Materials and Methods: From December 1999 to September 2001, The first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis of 14 cases (9 patients) was underwent, using a lag screw and dorsal mini-plate. The follow-up period was averaged in 14.6 months. The subjective findings with respect to pain, functional aspect of ability to stand and walk, and to shoe-wearing were evaluated. The objective findings, such as the gross alignment and the radiological measurements for the hallux valgus angle, 1,2 intermetatarsal angle, and dorsiflexion angle were also studied. Results: After the arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, the subjective improvement in pain, function and alignment was graded as excellent in seven (50%) feet, good in seven (50%) feet, and fair or poor in none. The hallux valgus angle and 1,2 intermetatarsal angle were reduced from $44.1{\pm}7.1$ and $15.5{\pm}6.2$ degrees to $13.6{\pm}2.6$ and $10.2{\pm}2.2$ degrees respectively. The dorsiflexion angle was measured in $20.3{\pm}3.7$ degrees after the fusion. The radiological fusion was observed at average 8 weeks after the operation in all cases. The overall complication of the procedure was few, except the delayed wound healing in one. Conclusion: The arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint using a lag screw and dorsal mini-plate was regarded as an excellent method of various operative modalities to correct the rheumatoid hallux valgus deformity.
Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the mechanism of hovering flight by single flapping wing, and to examine the effect of the phase difference between the fore- and hindwings in hovering flight by two flapping wings. The numerical method used is based on an immersed boundary method in Cartesian coordinates. The Reynolds number considered is Re=150 based on the maximum translational velocity and chord length of the wing. For single flapping wing, the stroke plane angles are $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ and the downstroke angles of attack are varied for each stroke angle. Results show that for each stroke plane angle, there is an optimal angle of attack to maximize the vertical force. Below the stroke angle of $60^{\circ}$, wake capturing reduces the negative vertical force during the upstroke. For two flapping wings, The phase lags of the hindwing are $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$ and $270^{\circ}$. The amplitudes of the stroke are 2.5 and 4.0 times the chord length at each phase lag. The results show that maximum vertical force is generated when the phase lag is zero, and the amplitude of the vertical force is minimum at the phase lag of $180^{\circ}$.
This paper deals with the problem of precise impact angle control of an actual homing missile guided by biased proportional navigation (BPN). To do this, the BPN guidance loop including dynamic lag is modeled as the confluent hyper-geometric differential equation and its analytic solution is derived. Based on the solution, a systematic way to determine the bias constant is newly devised. Different from the existing BPN solution obtained by ignoring the dynamic lag, the proposed one can exactly describe the behavior missile before target interception. hence it is drastically improved the angle constrained terminal guidance performance.

In this paper, a generalized guidance law with an arbitrary pair of guidance coefficients for impact angle control is proposed. Under the assumptions of a stationary target and a lag-free missile with constant speed, necessary conditions for the guidance coefficients to satisfy the required terminal constraints are obtained by deriving an explicit closed-form solution. Moreover, optimality of the generalized impact-angle control guidance law is discussed. By solving an inverse optimal control problem for the guidance law, it is found that the generalized guidance law can minimize a certain quadratic performance index. Finally, analytic solutions of the generalized guidance law for a first-order lag system are investigated. By solving a third-order linear time-varying ordinary differential equation, the blowing-up phenomenon of the guidance loop as the missile approaches the target is mathematically proved. Moreover, it is found that terminal misses due to the system lag are expressed in terms of the guidance coefficients, homing geometry, and the ratio of time-to-go to system time constant.
In this paper, roll/yaw attitude control of spacecraft using a double gimbaled wheel is discussed with two feedback controllers designed. One is a PD controller with no phase difference between roll and yaw control input. The other is a PD controller with a phase lag compensator about the yaw control input. The phase lag compensator is designed as a first order system and a lag parameter is designed for the yaw angle control. There are two case simulations for each controller ; constant disturbance torques and initial errors of nutation at motion. We obtain the results through simulations that steady-state error and rising time of yaw angle are determined by the compensator. Simulation parameters used in this study are the values of KOREASAT F1.
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the block shear and the fracture in the net section, according to AISC Specifications, by analysing the shear lag effect in the block shear rupture of the single angle with three or four bolt connection. Specimen with three or four bolt connections showed that failure generally went from block shear with some net section failures to classic net section failures. From the test results, showed that the connection length, the thickness of angle, and reduction factor, which affect the block shear rupture, were investigated. According to the test results, it is suggested that the calculation of the net section rupture capacity by using the reduction factor of U, that was suggested by Kulak, is needed.

The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model lead-lag in flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various lead-lag motion and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle(20o). To describe a motion profile of wing tip such as elliptic, line and circle, the phase difference of flapping and lead-lag motion was changed. And the effects of the motion profile on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.
