  • One of the most efficient designs for manufacturing LNG tank is the Moss spherical type because it has been validated through precise analyses with respect to reliability and construction safety by stress analysis. The Moss spherical tank is assembled with hundreds of Al thick plate patches that are deformed to curved shape at elevated temperature and welded together. It is essential to evaluate the amount of deflection in the Al5083 thick plate when the patch is transferred from the heating chamber to the forming die since the patch has a length of 12,000 mm and a thickness of 60 mm. Based on FE analysis results, a design procedure for minimizing deflection in Al5083 thick plate during transfer using a moving carrier is demonstrated in this paper.

  • This paper deals with the buckling strength of the skirt structure in the spherical LNG carriers. The spherical cargo tank systems consist of spherical tank, skirt, tank cover, pump tower, etc. The skirt supports the spherical cargo tank and is connected with ship hull structure. It is designed to act as a thermal brake between the tank and the hull structure by reducing the thermal conduction from the tank to the supporting structure. It is built up of three parts, upper aluminum part, middle stainless steel part and lower carbon steel part. The 150K spherical LNG carrier was designed and carried out the strength verification under Classification Societies Rule. The design loads due to acceleration, thermal distribution, self-weight and cargo weight were estimated considering requirements of the Class Rule and numerical simulation analyses. Based on the obtained design loads and experienced project data, the initial structure scantling was carried out. To verify the structural integrity, theoretical and numerical analyses were carried out and strength was evaluated aspect of buckling capacity. The results by LR and DNV design code are shown and discussed.

  • LNG-RV has the additional equipments that enable to re-gastify liquefied LNG in LNG carrier. This vessel has Submerged Turret Loading(STL) system which transports gas through submarine terminal. When LNG-RV is operating at sea, the opening condition is formed by detaching STL equipment from a vessel. The primary objective of the current work is to estimate accurate speed loss for the opening condition of the LNG-RV employing numerical calculations and model tests. In the model tests, resistance and self-propulsion tests are carried out for the bare-hull and the opening condition without STL. In addition to these, flow visualization utilizing tuft is used to make the flow patterns visible, in order to get a qualitative or quantitative information for inner part in case of detaching the STL.

  • 304L stainless steel sheets are used as a primary barrier for the insulation of membrane-type liquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier cargo containment system. 304L stainless steel is a transformation-induced-plasticity(TRIP) steel that exhibits complex material behavior, because it undergoes phase transformation during plastic deformation. Since the TRIP behavior is very important mechanical characteristics in a low-temperature environment, significant amounts of data are available in the literature. In the present study, a uniaxial tensile test for 304L stainless steel was performed to investigate nonlinear mechanical characteristics. In addition, a viscoplastic model and damage model is proposed to predict material fractures under arbitrary loads. The verification was conducted not only by a material-based comparative study involving experimental investigations, but also by a structural application to the LNG membrane of a Mark-III-type cargo containment system.

  • The present paper is concerned to the thermal analysis during the cool-down period of 138,000 m$^3$class GTT MARK-III membrane type LNG carrier servicing with LNG from the Middle East to Korea. It is the cool-down period that cools the insulation wall and the gas in LNG tank to avoid the thermal shock as the start of loading of -162$^{\circ}C$ LNG. For six hours of the standard cool-down period, the temperature of NG falls down from -4$0^{\circ}C$ to -13$0^{\circ}C$ and especially the mean temperature of the 1st barrier in the top side insulation wall falls down from -38.38$^{\circ}C$ to -122.42$^{\circ}C$ in case of IMO design condition. By the 3-D numerical calculation about the cargo tank and the cofferdam, the temperature variation in hulls and insulations is precisely predicted in this paper. And the mean temperature variation of gas is calculated as the function of the spraying rate by the heat balance model during the cool-down period.

  • Recently, butterfly valves are used as control valves for industrial process. However, there are not so many reports on cryogenic butterfly valves in spite of broad application in LNG storage station and LNG carriers. Present study is focused on the investigation of the detailed hydrodynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of cryogenic butterfly valves to contribute to the operation during the handling on LNG transportation system, and to the practical utilization in design of butterfly valves and actuators. The results show that large recirculation vortices in the region downstream of the valve are founded and the cavitation flows are intensively generated on the surface of valve disc at the relatively small opening angle. The aerodynamic characteristics, lift, drag and torque, acting on the valve disc are calculated. The pressure distribution and the pressure loss coefficient of the cryogenic butterfly valve show almost similar pattern with those of the butterfly valve which is used on the normal temperature.

  • The collision energy absorbing characteristics of side structure of the LNG carriers which have the cargo containment systems of the spherical and the membrane types are compared. A failure mechanism of the double hull side structures of 130, 000 $m^3$ class LNG carriers under sideways collision event has been simulated by using the detailed finite element calculations. In ship collision analysis, the finite element method based on explicit time integration has been use[1 with much success. Finite element modeling techniques for detail description of structural members antral ship motion regarding the dynamic behavior allowed to investigate the effect of bow shape and the initial contact position on side shell of collided ship. In the numerical simulations of the ship-to-ship sideways collision, the effect of the colliding bow shapes and the change of the colliding ship draft are investigated. The critical collision energy which is absorbed by a side structure of a collided ship until the fore-end of colliding ship arrives at the boundary of the cargo tank is calculated. The critical speed of specified colliding ships which can not penetrate the boundary of the LNG cargo tank of the collided ship under collision accident if evaluated.

  • Reinforced polyurethane foam (R-PUF), a material for liquefied natural gas cargo containment systems, is expected to have different mechanical properties depending on its stacking position of foaming as the glass fiber reinforcement of R-PUF sinks inside R-PUF under the influence of gravity. In addition, since R-PUF is not a homogeneous material, it is also expected that the coordinate direction within this material has a great correlation with the mechanical properties. So, this study was conducted to confirm this correlation with the one between the mechanical properties and the stacking position. In particular, in this study, R-PUF of 3 different densities (130, 170, and 210 kg/m3) was used, and tensile, compression, and shear tests of this material were performed under 5 temperatures. As a result of the tests, it was confirmed that the strength and modulus of elasticity of the material increased as the temperature decreased. Specifically, the strength and modulus of elasticity in the Z direction, which was the lamination direction, tended to be lower than those in the other directions. Finally, the strength and elastic modulus of different specimens of the material found at the bottom of their lamination compared to the specimens with these properties found at positions other than their lamination bottom were evaluated. Further analysis confirmed that as the temperature decreased, hardening of R-PUF occurred, indicating that the strength and modulus of elasticity increased. On the other hand, as the density of R-PUF increased, a sharp increase in strength and elastic modulus of R-PUF was observed.
