  • Automotive headlamp with LED matrix exploits low-cost low-speed serial buses such as I2C and SPI for digital LED control. When headlamp resolution increases, LED control data significantly increases to exceed capacity of control bus. This paper proposes HLCP (Headlamp LED Control Protocol), a novel LED maxtrix headlamp protocol. The proposed protocol exploits dedicated instructions to control many LEDs simultaneously, so it can control much more LEDs than conventional control buses although it is basically based on I2C bus. It is designed and verified in Verilog HDL. Simulation results show that HLCP can control LED matrix headlamp more efficiently than I2C and SPI.

  • Since LEDs (light emitting diodes) have many advantages as a light source in vehicle headlamp, such as good reliability, energy and space saving, and flexible headlamp design. On the other hand, the dependence of its performance and life on temperature have great influence on its practical use. In this study, design and fabrication of heat sink for vehicle LED headlamp were performed using thermally-conductive plastics. This study focused on the effective heat sink structure with limited space in the vehicle LED headlamp. We designed two different prototype of heat sink by thermal simulation using SolidWorks program, which had excellent temperature characteristics. The two different prototype of heat sink were fabricated by injection molding with thermally-conductive plastics. The results showed that LED $T_j$ (junction temperature) of sample B (model 1) and sample C (model 1, 2) was below then $165^{\circ}C$ when applying the thermally-conductive plastics in heat sink of vehicle LED headlamp.

  • Recently, LED light has been increasingly adopted for vehicles in both domestic and foreign automotive markets, while a variety of LED lights have been developed to be used particularly for headlamps. In this paper, we propose an H-type resonant snubber circuit topology for high efficiency of vehicle LDM (LED Driver Module) and realized LDM functions for vehicle headlamp by designing high-efficiency convertors. In addition, this study reduced the financial burden by configuring the system to control the whole with micom except for the use of individual dedicated chips to drive LED for high and low beam. In order to verify the validity of the proposed H-type resonant snubber capable of soft switching, simulations were performed using PSIM. As a result, the validity was experimentally verified by creating a prototype. Moreover, in order to actually attach the headlamp, the performance of the proposed convertor was confirmed by designing LDM to the limited size. Communications between the headlamp and higher controller were realized using LIN(Local Interconnect Network).

  • This paper proposes a LED bicycle headlamp with a wide viewing angle to help bicyclists see the front effectively and because of its high visibility to reduce the risks of accidents around intersections or blind spots. The wide viewing angle was determined to be $28^{\circ}$ because it can illuminate a 5 m wide area 10 m away. Therefore, the road conditions of the intersection can be observed with the bicycle handlebar tilted slightly to the left or right. The headlamp has a compact reflector with a width of 30 mm, height of 27 mm, and length of 17 mm. Owing to its size, a change in the position of a light source leads to severe changes in light distribution. Therefore, the tolerance of the source position was analyzed by a simulation. The tolerance was ${\pm}0.5mm$ at the X, Y and Z axes within a less centered aiming range of ${\pm}1^{\circ}$. Finally, the prototype of the bicycle headlamp was made and the light distribution was measured by an automotive headlamp light measurement system. The experimental results indicate that the headlamp illuminates a 5 m wide area with an edge light of 3.2 lx as well as meeting the K-mark regulation.

  • As headlamp technology advances, newly developed various headlamps were introduced in the market. The objective of this study is to quantitatively analyze the detection distance of the recently developed LED headlamps and existing headlamps, complying with specific technical standard. Background: The detection distance of headlamps is very important to prevent automobile accident at night time. The studies of detection distance of LED, Halogen and HID headlamp have been conducted, but no study has shown the detection distance of pedestrian target with various colors (Black, White, Blue). Method: The experiment of detection distance was conducted with 30 people, which divide into 2 groups as 15 men and 15 women. Automatic transferable target on the rail was manufactured in order to reduce the error of study's result, and ANOVA also conducted to analyze the main effect with sign color, sex and headlamp classified by detection distance. In addition, the luminance by average detection distance was measured as well. Results: The detection distance of headlamps was HID > LED > Halogen. The luminance measure of LED headlamp was lower than HID and Halogen headlamps. Conclusion: The headlamp performs a very significant role for safety at night time but it needs to be improved through assessment of visual characteristics. Also, it needs to be suggested the need of test method for dynamic detection distance concerning technical development is suggested.

  • In this study, the cause of the decrease in transmittance of the outer lens among the causes of the decrease in the amount of light in the automobile headlamp was identified, and the improvement method was selected to determine the effect. The causes of defects that lower the transmittance of the outer lens are divided into a moisture problem and a haze problem. The moisture problem is caused by the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the head lamp, and the haze problem occurs when the heat inside the head lamp evaporates the haze component contained in the plastic material and attaches it to the outer lens. In order to improve the haze problem that occurs in plastic raw materials, the structures of the bulb light source type headlamp and the LED chip light source type headlamp were analyzed. Among them, the housing material of the LED chip light source type headlamp, which is structurally prone to haze gas, was selected as the test target. In the mass-production injection process of the housing, the drying process was selected as a method to minimize haze gas without adding a separate production process. After extracting a sample every drying time at a constant drying temperature, the sample was put into a haze tester and the residual amount of haze gas was measured. As a result, it was confirmed that the residual amount of Haze gas in the material decreased as the drying time increased.

  • We investigated the optical design of a smart headlamp capable of producing various beam patterns through only on/off modulation of light sources. This was implemented by forming a continuous matrix of beams from discontinuous beam patterns by means of a multi-array LED optical system. As one such optical system, the multi-array LED system is a convenient and economical device for implementing beam patterns with the simple on/off modulation of the light sources. A single optical assembly module can be made by combining a multiple-LED array, optical system module, and electronic control with no need for any additional mechanical components. The present optical system was designed to include a secondary lens and a projection lens mounted at the front of each LED in the array to realize accurate lighting patterns as well as the required luminosity at a distance of 25 m in the forward direction. Finally, we identified and analyzed the patterns implemented by the designed optical system that produced satisfactory performance of high beams and adaptive driving beams (ADB).

  • Currently, LED headlamps are only attached to newly manufactured vehicles, and it remains difficult to mount LED headlamps on used cars. Therefore LED headlamps need to be developed for used cars as a replacement of their halogen lamps. Due to a number of spatial limitations, it is critical to ensure a certain level of thermal performance. In order to obtain a design for efficient heat radiation, this paper aimed to optimize thermal management through a combination of heat sinks, heat pipes and fans. Based on such a design, this paper succeeded in developing LED headlamps of the desired performance to replace the halogen bulbs of used cars.
