  • The biochemical study of sugar uptake in yeasts started five decades ago and led to the early production of abundant kinetic and mechanistic data. However, the first accurate overview of the underlying sugar transporter genes was obtained relatively late, due mainly to the genetic complexity of hexose uptake in the model yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The genomic era generated in turn a massive amount of information, allowing the identification of a multitude of putative sugar transporter and sensor-encoding genes in yeast genomes, many of which are phylogenetically related. This review aims to briefly summarize our current knowledges on the biochemical and molecular features of the transporters of pentoses in yeasts, when possible establishing links between previous kinetic studies and genomic data currently available. Emphasis is given to recent developments concerning the identification of D-xylose transporter genes, which are thought to be key players in the optimization of S. cerevisiae for bioethanol production from lignocellulose hydrolysates.

  • In this work, the adsorption characteristics and mechanical interfacial properties of treated silicas by silane coupling agents, such as, ${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and ${\gamma}$-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS), were investigated. The equilibrium spreading pressure ($pi_e$), surface free energy ($gamma_s$ s/), and specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) were studied by the BET method with $N_2$/77 K adsorption. The developments of nonpolar functional groups of the silica surfaces treated by silane coupling agents led to the increase in the $S_{BET}$, $pi_e$, and $gamma_s$, resulting in the improved tearing energy ($G_{mc}$)of the silica/rubber composites. The composites treated by MPS showed the superior mechanical interfacial properties in these systems. These results explained by changing of crystalline size, dispersion, agglomerate, and surface functional group of silica/rubber composites.

  • When Arctic offshore development in the 1970's first led to the consideration of ice capable tankers, there was a high level of uncertainty over design requirements for both safety and ship performance. Also here was a lack of reliable methods to evaluate design proposals. Since that time, improved understanding of the ice environment has raised the confidence of design specifications. Parallel developments have resulted in a suite of engineering tools for ship performance evaluation at the design stage Recent development of offshore and near shore oil and gas reserves in several countries together with economic studies of increased transportation through the Russian Arctic has newly introduced the interest in ice capable tanker design. in response, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) applied its experience in tanker design and construction to the design of a specialized tanker with ice capability. SHI produced two prototype hull designs for further study. The performance of both hulls and of the propellers was evaluated at the Institute for Marine Dynamics (IMD) in St. John's, Newfoundland This paper discusses the development of the design, describes the model experiments to determine performance and variations, and presents the results.

  • Capsule Endoscope(CE) is a capsule-shaped electronic device which can examine the lesions in digestive tract of human body. Recently the medical procedure using capsule endoscope is receiving great attention to both doctors and patients, since the conventional push-typed endoscope using cables brings great pain and fear to the patients. The technique was firstly available in 2000 and is based on a convergence techniques among BT(Bio Technology), IT(Information Technology), and NT(Nano Technology). The device consists of an optical parts including LEDs(Light Emitting Diodes), an image sensor, a communication module and a power module. Capsule endoscope is the embodiment of the state-of-the art technology and requires key technologies in the various engineering fields. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the composition of the capsule endoscope system, and compare the communication method between RF(Radio Frequency) communication and HBC(Human Body Communication), which are typically used for data transmission in the capsule endoscope. Furthermore, we analyze the specification of commercialized capsule endoscopes and present the future developments and technical challenges.

  • Complete chloroplast genome sequences provide detailed information about any structural changes of the genome, instances of phylogenetic reconstruction, and molecular markers for fine-scale analyses. Recent developments of next-generation sequencing (NGS) tools have led to the rapid accumulation of genomic data, especially data pertaining to chloroplasts. Short reads deposited in public databases such as the Sequence Read Archive of the NCBI are open resources, and the corresponding chloroplast genomes are yet to be completed. The V. dilatatum complex in Korea consists of four morphologically similar species: V. dilatatum, V. erosum, V. japonicum, and V. wrightii. Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses based on several DNA regions did not resolve the relationship at the species level. In order to examine the level of variation of the chloroplast genome in the V. dilatatum complex, raw reads of V. dilatatum deposited in the NCBI database were used to reconstruct the whole chloroplast genome, with these results compared to the genomes of V. erosum, V. japonicum, and three other species in Viburnum. These comparative genomics results found no significant structural changes in Viburnum. The degree of interspecific variation among the species in the V. dilatatum complex is very low, suggesting that the species of the complex may have been differentiated recently. The species of the V. dilatatum complex share large unique deletions, providing evidence of close relationships among the species. A phylogenetic analysis of the entire genome of the Viburnum showed that V. dilatatum is a sister to one of two accessions of V. erosum, making V. erosum paraphyletic. Given that the overall degree of variation among the species in the V. dilatatum complex is low, the chloroplast genome may not provide a phylogenetic signal pertaining to relationships among the species.

  • The adiabatic nuclear demagnetization cooling technique has reduced the lowest accessible temperature to the regime of microkelvin, and consequently led to a large expansion in microkelvin physics such as solid and liquid $^{3}He$, superconductivity of noble metals, spin glass transition, and nuclear magnetism. Our ability to reach temperature in microkelvin regime has greatly facilitated by the developments of dilution refrigerator and superconductivity magnet. It is appropriate to divide nuclear demagnetization cooling into two categories; those in which only the nuclear spin system is cooled down and those in which the lattice and conduction electrons in the refrigerant or the specimen are also cooled by the cooling power of nuclear spin system. The former cooling technique has utilized to investigate the nuclear magnetism at temperature in nanokelvin regime. The latter is widely used in studying the phenomena occurring in microkelvin regime. In this review paper, we will discuss the basic principles of nuclear demagnetization cooling and its applications. • Background: Recent developments in surgical techniques and hospital care have led to improved outcomes following total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) repair. However, the surgical repair of TAPVR remains associated with a high risk of mortality and need for reoperation. We conducted this retrospective study to evaluate mid-term outcomes following in situ TAPVR repair without total circulatory arrest (TCA), and to identify the risk factors associated with surgical outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 29 cases of surgical intervention for TAPVR conducted between April 2000 and July 2015. All patients were newborns or infants who underwent in situ TAPVR repair without TCA. Results: Four anatomic subtypes of TAPVR were included in this study: supracardiac (20 cases, 69.0%), cardiac (4 cases, 13.8%), infracardiac (4 cases, 13.8%), and mixed (1 case, 3.4%). The median follow-up period for all patients was 42.9 months. Two (6.9%) early mortalities occurred, as well as 2 (6.9%) cases of postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO). Preoperative ventilator care (p=0.027) and preoperative PVO (p=0.002) were found to be independent risk factors for mortality. Conclusion: In situ repair of TAPVR without TCA was associated with encouraging mid-term outcomes. Preoperative ventilator care and preoperative PVO were found to be independent risk factors for mortality associated with TAPVR repair.
