  • All measures to cope with flooding rely on flood predictions to some extent. To investigate these predictions such as maximum water level or inundation area, a numerical model has been developed. The governing equations of the model are the two-dimensional Saint-Venant equations. The governing equations are discretized explicitly by using the leap-frog scheme and upwind scheme based on quadtree grids. The predicted numerical results have been verified by comparing to those of a Thacker problem. As a result of verifications, the present model is not only nearly four times as efficient as uniform grids but also in close agreement with the previous models. Next, the developed model is applied to several flood events in the Uiryeong basin. A general tendency is found that as a frequency is increasing, overall water levels including peak water level are increasing. At only a 500 year frequency, maximum water level is higher than 18.5 m. Therefore, it can be predictable that inundation will be generated in a 500 year frequency.

  • Captured human motion data has been widely utilized for understanding the mechanism of human motion and synthesizing the animation of virtual characters. Searching for desired motions from given motion data is an important prerequisite of analyzing and editing those selected motions. This paper presents a new method of content-based motion retrieval without the need of additional metadata such as keywords. While existing search methods have focused on skeletal configurations of body pose or planar trajectories of locomotion, our method receives a three-dimensional trajectory as its input query and retrieves a set of motion intervals in which the trajectories of body parts such as hands, foods, and pelvis are similar to the input trajectory. In order to allow the user to intuitively sketch spatial trajectories, we used the Leap Motion controller that can precisely trace finger movements as the input device for our experiments. We have evaluated the effectiveness of our approach by conducting a user study in which the users search for dozens of pre-selected motions from baseketball motion data including a variety of moves such as dribbling and shooting.

  • A wavelet-Galerkin scheme based on the time-dependent Maxwell's equations is presented. Daubechies wavelet with two vanishing wavelet moments is expanded for basis function in spatial domain and Yee's leap-frog approach is applied. The shifted interpolation property of Daubechies wavelet family leads to the simplified formulations for inhomogeneous media without the additional matrices for the integral or material operator. The stability condition is formulated. The dispersion characteristics are analyzed and compared with those of finite difference time domain and multiresolution time domain methods. The analyses show the excellent trade-off between the regularity and the support width of the basis function. Although the basis function has only two vanishing wavelet moments, it is enough to provide negligible dispersive error in the numerical analysis and its compact support enables only several involved terms per nodes. The storage effectiveness, execution time reduction and accuracy of this scheme are demonstrated by calculating the resonant frequencies of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous cavities.

  • Sergei Eisenstein explains pathos as the basic principles of artistic creation in "The Structure of the Film" written in 1939. The definition of pathos is embodied as effect to leap the audience in ecstasy. Pathos aiming at qualitative configuration of the audience's emotions is film form and the core of cinematic expression as important as montage. Eisenstein as one of the greatest film directors sought to theorize cinematic art. He wanted to fuse the creative and theory of film through principles such as the collision montage, intellectual image, and construction of pathos. This study explores the background of the discussion that Eisenstein going beyond the status as an artist wanted to experiment with montage to lead the change in audience and build pathos effect in the extended. This article examines the meaning of pathos in works of art he explained. It should also be understood the construction of pathos for changing the emotion of the audience through the example of the film he analyzed.

  • These days, with the advent of digital broadcasting, media environment offers users an opportunity to enjoy differentiated contents in a more aggressive fashion through user-media interactions based on computer technology. In fact, the development of contents which can induce spontaneous acts from users such as outdoor ads which use certain sensors and devices and exhibition halls has been active. With the development of low-price motion recognition devices, people have been able to enjoy diverse interaction-applied media by recognizing users' motion data without body contact. In this paper, we developed an interactive media player that can recognize the user's motion and control the video in the web service environment without installing a specific program. In addition, we set user motion recognition range and developed a user motion recognition algorithm suitable for the Leap Motion equipment installed in the kiosk. The results of this study can be experienced by various interactive media such as interactive tourism, education, and movie contents in kiosks that can be installed in public places.

  • We study the operation of a lunisolar calendar in Korea and its time data calculation method. The dates based on the lunisolar calendar have been conventionally used in Korea after the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1896. With the Astronomy Act enacted in 2010, the lunisolar calendar is presently being used as an official calendar along with the Gregorian calendar. However, no institutionalized regulations have been provided on the time data calculation method by the lunisolar calendar. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute very recently established the regulations on the lunisolar calendar operation in Korea. We introduce the regulations together with historical substances and analyze the time data calculated according to the regulations for 600 years from 1901 to 2500. From our study, we find that the value of ${\Delta}T$ (i.e., the difference between the terrestrial time and the universal time) is the most critical parameter causing uncertainty on the data. We also find that all new Moon days in the almanacs agree with our calculations since 1912. Meanwhile, we find that new Moon and winter solstice times are found to be very close to midnight in 38 and five cases, respectively. For instance, the new Moon time on January 14, 2097 is 0 h 0 min 8 s. In this case, deciding the first day (i.e., new moon day) in a lunar month is difficult because of the large uncertainty in the value of ${\Delta}T$. Regarding with a lunar leap month, we find that the rules of inserting the leap month do not apply for 17 years. In conclusion, we believe that our findings are helpful in determining calendar days by using the lunisolar calendar.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the slacks pattern making on the movement-fitness of the knee region. The experimental items were divided into the lower limb movement (M1~M5) and slacks pattern designs (4 : basic pattern, in-pleats, side-pleats, seam-line increase). This study was done by clothing pressure test, sensory evaluation test and the difference shape-transformation of wearing-slacks. The summarized finding resulted from experiments and investigation are suggested as follows ; First, the clothing pressure test showed that the order of clothing pressure in the movement was the rabbit leap movement (M3), the sit on knees (M4), the nobleman sitting (M5), the sit on chair (M2) from the highest to the lowest. In the comparison of clothing pressure tested by blocks of lower-limb, center front knee region shows the highest of 300g/cm2. In it by constructional methods, the clothing pressure of in-pleats, side-pleats methods shows lower than basic pattern, hem-line increase methods. Also in comparison of the two methods, in-pleats method shows lower than side-pleats method. Second, by the sensory evaluation test based on the lower-limb movements and constructional methods of slacks, it was found that the functional factor score of the rabbit leap movement was also the waist, hip, knee region was the lowest in all blocks. And in the comparison of constructional methods, in-pleats method was the highest in all methods. Third, in consideration of the difference in the shape-transformation of wearing-slacks on the movement-fitness, pleats pattern design methods showed that the ratio of shape-transformation was lower than basic on seam-line increase methods. But the difference of the side-pleats and in-pleats methods was litle. According to these investigation, the slacks pattern making caused by movement-fitness on the knee region, in-pleats design method was the functional slacks pattern.

  • VR content manipulation equipment is not easy for individuals to access because it requires high prices. Especially, in the case of a system for tracking the motion of the user among the VR contents, a separate optical sensor device using an infrared camera is generally used. The disadvantage of the optical sensor equipment is that the measurable range is dependent on the measurement direction when tracking the rotation motion when using only a single device. In order to solve the above problems, this paper shows that the inertial sensor of the smartphone, which is generally owned by the public, can track the rotational motion of the user regardless of the measurement direction . The system using the LeapMotion is used as the reference system, and the system using the smart phone is defined as the evaluation system, and the usability of the evaluation system is verified by comparing the user satisfaction of the two systems.

  • The development of Virtual Reality (VR)-related technologies has resulted in the improved performance of VR devices as well as affordable price arrangements, granting many users easy access to VR technology. VR drawing applications are not complicated for users and are also highly mature, being used for education, performances, and more. For controller-based spatial drawing interfaces, the user's drawing interface becomes constrained by the controller. This study proposes hand interaction based spatial drawing system where the user, who has never used the controller before, can intuitively use the drawing application by mounting LEAP Motion at the front of the Head Mounted Display (HMD). This traces the motion of the user's hand in front of the HMD to draw curved surfaces in virtual environments.
