In recent years, countries like Europe and Japan have been involved in many researches on the Low-Crested Structure (LCS) which is the method to protect beach erosion and it is regarded as an alternative to the submerged breakwaters, and compiled its results and released the design manual. In the past, studies on LCS have focused on two-dimensional wave transmission and calculating required weight of armor units, and these were mainly examined and discussed based on experiments. In this study, three-dimensional numerical analysis is performed on permeable LCS. The open-source CFD code olaFlow based on the Navier-Stokes momentum equations is applied to the numerical analysis, which is a strongly nonlinear analysis method that enables breaking and turbulence analysis. As a result, the distribution characteristics of the LCS such as water level, water flow, and turbulent kinetic energy were examined and discussed, then they were carefully compared and examined in the case of submerged breakwaters. The study results indicate that there is a difference between the flow patterns of longshore current near the shoreline, the spatial distribution of longshore and on-offshore directions of mean turbulent kinetic energy in case of submerged breakwaters and LCS. It is predicted that the difference in these results leads to the difference in sand movement.

Index structures that are based on sequence matching for XPath processing such as ViST, PRIX and LCS-TRIM have recently been proposed to reduce the search time of XML documents. However, ViST can cause a lot of unnecessary computation and I/O when processing structural joint queries because its numbering scheme is not optimized. PRIX and LCS-TRIM require much processing time for matching XML data trees and queries. In this paper, we propose a novel index structure that solves the problems of ViST and improves the performance of PRIX and LCS-TRIM. Our index structure provides the minimum sequence matching scheme to efficiently process structural queries. Finally, to verify the superiority of the proposed index structure with the minimum sequence matching scheme, we compare our index structure with ViST, PRIX and LCS-TRIM in terms of query processing of a single path or of a branching path including wild-cards ('*' and '//' ).
In this study, we developed a liquid crystal (LC)-based optical sensor for monitoring enzymatic activity through orientational changes in liquid crystals (LCs) coupled to the properties of a poly-${\small{L}}$-lysine (PLL)-based polymeric membrane. We prepared a PLL-based polymeric membrane at the planar interface between the thermotropic liquid crystal and aqueous phases. The PLL-based polymeric membrane was obtained by contacting the PLL solution with water immiscible LCs, 4-cyano-4'-pentyl-biphenyl (5CB) doped with adipoyl chloride. We then investigated the membrane properties by examining the permeability of the membrane to phospholipids, 1,2-didodecanoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DLPC). The permeability of the membrane to transport phospholipids was monitored through the orientational transition of 5CB in contact with the dispersions of DLPC. Since trypsin can enzymatically catalyze the hydrolysis of PLL, we incubated an aqueous trypsin solution with the membrane for 2 h at room temperature to cause an increase in the permeability of the polymeric membrane to DLPC. As a result, a bright to dark optical shift of LCs was observed, which implied that an enzymatic reaction between trypsin and PLL-based membrane occurred. Two control experiments using chymotrypsin and bovine serum albumin (BSA) revealed no sign of improved permeability based on the orientational transition of LCs.
To promote the practical use of livestock manure compost (LC) for paddy rice cultivation, the fertilization efficiency of nutrients in LCs was investigated compared to that of chemical fertilizer. This experiment was conducted at rice field in Hwaseong, Korea, with 6 treatments by each of 3 kinds of tested LCs, cattle manure compost (CaC), swine manure compost (SwC) and chicken manure compost (ChC). The treatments consisted of 3 application levels of LCs and 3 chemical fertilizer treatments having the same application levels with LCs. $NH_4$-N content in soil became higher according to the increase in the urea application rate, while it became lower in LC plots than in urea plots, and statistically had no significant difference among LC plots. There was a close relationship between phosphate fertilization rate and the increment of soil available phosphate content after experiment resulting y = 0.1788x - 6.169 ($R^2=0.9425$) when applied fused superphosphate fertilizer, and y = 0.0662x - 2.689 ($R^2=0.9315$) when applied LC at the equivalent rates to phosphate input (x: phosphate application rate, kg $ha^{-1}$, y: increment in soil available phosphate content, mg $kg^{-1}$). And from these two equations, the correlation on the phosphate application rate between fused superphosphate fertilizer and LC could be obtained as y = 2.7056x - 52.492 (x: $P_2O_5$ application rate of fused superphosphate, kg $ha^{-1}$, y: $P_2O_5$ application rate of LC, kg $ha^{-1}$). Plant height, number of tillers, nutrients uptake by rice, and rice yield showed higher levels in N 100% and N 150% application plots of chemical fertilizers, while every LC plots exhibited lower values and no significant difference among them. Relative nitrogen fertilization efficiencies of LCs compared to urea was 12.3% for CaC, 8.8 for SwC and 24.6 for ChC, respectively.

This study evaluates the variation characteristics of irregular wave fields for two-dimensional Low-Crested Structure (LCS) by olaFlow model based on the two-phases flow by numerical analysis. The numerical results of olaFlow model are verified by comparing irregular wave profile of target wave spectrum and measured one, and their spectra. In addition, spacial variation of irregular wave spectrum, wave transmission ratio, root-mean square wave height, time-averaged velocity and time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy by two-dimensional LCS are discussed numerically. The time-averaged velocity, one of the most important numerical results is formed counterclockwise circulating cell and clockwise nearshore current on the front of LCS, and strong uni-directional flow directing onshore side around still water level.

The present paper proposes a novel dynamic system for hand gesture recognition. The approach involved is comprised of three main steps: detection, tracking and recognition. First, the gesture contour captured by a 2D-camera is detected by combining the three-frame difference method and skin-color elliptic boundary model. Then, the trajectory of the hand gesture is extracted via a gesture-tracking algorithm based on an occlusion-direction oriented linear extrapolation predictor, where the gesture coordinate in next frame is predicted by the judgment of current occlusion direction. Finally, to overcome the interference of insignificant trajectory segments, the longest common subsequence (LCS) is employed with the aid of velocity information. Besides, to tackle the subgesture problem, i.e., some gestures may also be a part of others, the most probable gesture category is identified through comparison of the relative LCS length of each gesture, i.e., the proportion between the LCS length and the total length of each template, rather than the length of LCS for each gesture. The gesture dataset for system performance test contains digits ranged from 0 to 9, and experimental results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
This paper presents a feasibility study for producing the medical isotope $^{99m}Tc$ using the hazardous and currently wasted radioisotope $^{99}Tc$. This can be achieved with the nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) phenomenon, which has recently been made applicable due to high-intensity laser Compton scattering (LCS) photons. In this work, 21 NRF energy states of $^{99}Tc$ have been identified as potential contributors to the photo-production of $^{99m}Tc$ and their NRF cross-sections are evaluated by using the single particle estimate model and the ENSDF data library. The evaluated cross sections are scaled using known measurement data for improved accuracy. The maximum LCS photon energy is adjusted in a way to cover all the significant excited states that may contribute to $^{99m}Tc$ generation. An energy recovery LINAC system is considered as the LCS photon source and the LCS gamma spectrum is optimized by adjusting the electron energy to maximize $^{99m}Tc$ photo-production. The NRF reaction rate for $^{99m}Tc$ is first optimized without considering the photon attenuations such as photo-atomic interactions and self-shielding due to the NRF resonance itself. The change in energy spectrum and intensity due to the photo-atomic reactions has been quantified using the MCNP6 code and then the NRF self-shielding effect was considered to obtain the spectrums that include all the attenuation factors. Simulations show that when a $^{99}Tc$ target is irradiated at an intensity of the order $10^{17}{\gamma}/s$ for 30 h, 2.01 Ci of $^{99m}Tc$ can be produced.
Nowadays, Genomic data constitutes one of the fastest growing datasets in the world. As of 2025, it is supposed to become the fourth largest source of Big Data, and thus mandating adequate high-performance computing (HPC) platform for processing. With the latest unprecedented and unpredictable mutations in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the research community is in crucial need for ICT tools to process SARS-CoV-2 RNA data, e.g., by classifying it (i.e., clustering) and thus assisting in tracking virus mutations and predict future ones. In this paper, we are presenting an HPC-based SARS-CoV-2 RNAs clustering tool. We are adopting a data science approach, from data collection, through analysis, to visualization. In the analysis step, we present how our clustering approach leverages on HPC and the longest common subsequence (LCS) algorithm. The approach uses the Hadoop MapReduce programming paradigm and adapts the LCS algorithm in order to efficiently compute the length of the LCS for each pair of SARS-CoV-2 RNA sequences. The latter are extracted from the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Virus repository. The computed LCS lengths are used to measure the dissimilarities between RNA sequences in order to work out existing clusters. In addition to that, we present a comparative study of the LCS algorithm performance based on variable workloads and different numbers of Hadoop worker nodes.
The voltage holding ratio (VHR) and Residual DC property in the in-plane switching (IPS) cell was studied Several IPS cells which have different concentrations of cynao liquid crystals (LCs) and different resistivities of fluorine LCs were fabricated VHR and residual DC voltage in the IPS cells using the capacitance-voltage (C-V) hysteresis method was measured. We found that the VHR of the IPS cell was decreasing with increasing concentration of cyano LC. The residual DC voltage of the IPS cell was decreasing with increasing concentration of cyano LCs. We suggest that the high polarity of cyano LC helps reducing the residual DC voltage.

Residual DC voltage of the in-plane switching (IPS)-liquid crystal display(LCD) by voltage-transmittance (V-T) hysteresis method was studied. Several IPS-LCD which have different concentrations of cynao LCs and different resistivities of fluorine LCs were fabricated. We found that the residual DC voltage of the IPS-LCD was decreasing with increasing concentration of cyano LCs and increasing with decreasing specific resistivity of fluorine LC materials. The residual DC voltage property can be improved by low molecular weight and high polarity of cyano LC.
