다이오드 레이저를 이용한 Chip On Glass 접합에 관한 연구 (Study of Chip On Glass Bonding Method using Diode Laser)

  • A new chip on glass(COG) technique by making use of a high power diode laser for LCD driver IC packaging of LCD has been developed. A laser joining technology of the connection of IC chip to glass panel has several advantages over conventional method such as hot plate joining: shorter process time, high reliability of joining, and better fur fine pitch joining. The reach time to cure temperature of ACF in laser joining is within 1 second. In this study, results show that the total process time of joining is reduced by halves than that of conventional method. The adhesion strength is mainly 100-250 N/cm. It is confirmed that the COG technology using high power diode laser joining can be applied to advanced LCDs with a fine pitch.

대면적 TFT-LCD 유리기판 이송용 복합재료 로봇 손 개발에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Development of Composite Robot Hand for TFT-LCD Glass Transport)

  • A robot hand is used to transport the glass substrate in TFT-LCD manufacturing process. Carbon/epoxy composite is one of the best materials for this kind of robot hand application, due to their lightweight, high stiffness, and good damping characteristics. Major requirement of the robot hand is given as allowable deflection under weight loading of glass substrate and robot hand itself. In this thesis, a carbon/epoxy robot hand was analyzed using finite element method and beam theory to determine the deflection of the hand under the loading that is equivalent to actual weight. Because natural frequency is one of the major interests in robot hand design for TFT-LCD manufacturing process, modal analysis is also conducted using finite element method and beam theory. A robot hand was manufactured, and actual deflection and natural frequency were measured to verify the analysis results and compliance to requirement. The test results showed good agreement with analysis results.

  • As next generation display, TFT LCD gets into the spotlight, and the bigger glass size is required. Currently, its display size is 1500 mm by 1870 mm at the six generation comparing with 300mm by 400 mm at the first one and the size is increasing continuously, which cause the difficulties to apply the cleaning operation including the general brush cleaning. In this study, water-jet cleaning operation has been introduced, which spent the less water them other cleaning methods. Throughout the experiment, is has been found the possible damage of the declined cell and the variation of the tilt bias angle depending upon the increasing time. In addition, the simulation predicts the glass bending of the display.

Samsung's $4^{th}$ Generation TFT- LCD Production Line Concept

  • With the explosive growth of Note-PC and Desktop monitor market, TFT LCD market confronted a entire supply shortage during 1999. Forecasting a more booming stage for the next several years, many TFT-LCD panel manufacturers continue to expand the capacity of their existing plants and also make an additional investment in building new plants. The new investment is concentrated on the $4^{th}$ generation TFT LCD line in order to improve investment efficiency. The set up of the Samsung's Gen 3.5 line progressed with satisfactorily performance using $600{\times}720mm$ glass size. We have continuously reviewed several issues regarding the glass size for our next Gen. 4 line, which leads to adopt $730{\times}920mm$. Due to the continuous enlargement of a substrate size and following difficulty in transferring cassettes, the next line is expected to be the last line that employs "cassette transfer". The layout of the next line will shift from conventional "concentration-type" to "separation-type" configuration for the purpose of reducing transfer distance as well as transfer time. The details will be discussed in this paper.

LCD 유리기판 폴리싱 가공특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Polishing Characteristics of LCD Glass)

  • This paper reports a kinematic analysis and experimental results for the polishing process of G7 LCD glass. A kinematic analysis for the relative motion of the upper plate and lower plate has been done and computer simulation has been programmed. A series of polishing experiments has also been carried out and compared with analytical data. The experimental results agreed well with analytical ones. The experimental results indicate that the polishing removal is proportional to the relative speed and pressure.

  • We studied about new module technology to solve warpage problems that produce bending of cell in the LCD (Liquid crystal display). Characteristics of cell gap and glass bending of applying heat Panel's PAD part and cell at various temperature was investigated. When applies heat and compresses PAD party only in case of compressing COG(Chip on Glass), uniformity of cell gap that happen by glass bending by temperature of these compressing COG In the PAD party is decreased. However, in case of compress COG. glass bending of applying heat Panel's PAD part and cell at various temperature produced 20um. But, uniformity of cell gap was not decreased. Therefore, it is considered that applying heat Panel's PAD part and cell could decrease uniformity of cell gap and bending of glass.

Noble LCD with a Single Supporting Substrate

  • A recently developed phase separated composite film method has been employed to fabricate a liquid crystal (LC) based electro-optical device using a single glass substrate. The resulting device is made of adjacent parallel layers of LC and polymer maded by phase separation. The LC layer is confined between the solidified polymer layer on one side and the glass substrate on the other. The electro-optical properties of these devices demonstrate their technological potential in light weight and hand-held electronic products.

  • A new type of LCD has been developed using recently developed phase separated composite film method with a single glass substrate. The resultant structures are made of adjacent parallel layers of liquid crystal and polymer. The LC layer is confined between the solidified polymer layer and glass substrate. The electra-optical properties of the display have been investigated. This technique has the potential to realize a lightweight display for hand-held portable electronic products.

  • STN LCDs on Plastic Film substrates for mobile communication devices have been researched and developed at KETI in KOREA. The Plastic Film substrate is so weak to heat and pressure that its fabrication process is limited to $110^{\circ}C(Tg)$. In order to maintain uniform pressure on Plastic Film substrate we used newly designed jig and fabrication process. Electro-optical characteristics are better than or equivalent to those of typical glass LCD though it is thinner, lighter-weight, and more robust than glass LCD.
