Perception of Korean Vowels by English and Mandarin Learners of Korean: Effects of Acoustic Similarity Between L1 and L2 Sounds and L2 Experience (영어권, 중국어권 학습자의 한국어 모음 지각 -모국어와 목표 언어 간의 음향 자질의 유사성과 한국어 경험의 효과 중심으로-)

  • This paper investigates how adult Mandarin- and English- speaking learners of Korean perceive Korean vowels, with focus on the effect of the first language (L1) and the second language (L2) acoustic relationship, as well as the influence of Korean language experience. For this study, native Mandarin and Canadian English speakers who have learned Korean as a foreign language, as well as a control group of native Korean speakers, participated in two experiments. Experiment 1 was designed to examine acoustic similarities between Korean and English vowels, as well as Korean and Mandarin vowels to predict which Korean vowels are relatively easy, or difficult for L2 learners to perceive. The linear discriminant analysis (Klecka, 1980) based on their L1-L2 acoustic similarity predicted that L2 Mandarin learners would have perceptual difficulty rankings for Korean vowels as follows: (the easiest) /i, a, e/ >> /ɨ, ʌ, o, u/ (most difficult), whereas L2 English learners would have perceptual difficulty rankings for Korean vowels as follows: (the easiest) /i, a, e, ɨ, ʌ/ >> /o, u/ (most difficult). The goal of Experiment 2 was to test how accurately L2 Mandarin and English learners perceive Korean vowels /ɨ, ʌ, o, u/ which are considered to be difficult for L2 learners. The results of a mixed-effects logistic model revealed that English listeners showed higher identification accuracy for Korean vowels than Mandarin listeners, indicating that having a larger L1 vowel inventory than the L2 facilitates L2 vowel perception. However, both groups have the same ranking of Korean vowel perceptual difficulty: ɨ > ʌ > u > o. This finding indicates that adult learners of Korean can perceive the new vowel /ɨ/, which does not exist in their L1, more accurately than the vowel /o/, which is acoustically similar to vowels in their L1, suggesting that L2 learners are more likely to establish additional phonetic categories for new vowels. In terms of the influence of experience with L2, it was found that identification accuracy increases as Korean language experience rises. In other words, the more experienced English and Mandarin learners of Korean are, the more likely they are to have better identification accuracy in Korean vowels than less experienced learners of Korean. Moreover, there is no interaction between L1 background and L2 experience, showing that identification accuracy of Korean vowels is higher as Korean language experience increases regardless of their L1 background. Overall, these findings of the two experiments demonstrated that acoustic similarity between L1 and L2 sounds using the LDA model can partially predict perceptual difficulty in L2 acquisition, indicating that other factors such as perceptual similarity between L1 and L2, the merge of Korean /o/ and /u/ may also influence their Korean vowel perception.

  • We investigated the doping effects of $ReO_3$ in different p-type organic semiconductors on the formation of charge transfer complexes and the electrical conductivity by comparing the absorption in ultraviolet-visible-nearinfrared (UV-Vis-NIR) and the current density-voltage characteristics of the hole only devices, respectively. The large energy difference between the HOMO level of host and Fermi energy level of dopant (${\Delta}E$=$E_{HOHO,host}$ - $E_{F,dopant}$) gives higher concentration of CT complexes and enhanced conductivity.

Electronic Spectroscopy and Ligand Field Analysis of $\Lambda$-fac-Tris(L-alaninato)chromium(III)

  • The 77 K emission and excitation, and room-temperature UV-visible spectra of $\Lambda$-fac[Cr(L-ala)$_3$] (ala = alanine anion) have been measured. The ten electronic transitions due to spinallowed and spin-forbidden are assigned. With the observed electronic transition energies, ligand field optimizations have been performed to determine the bonding properties of L-alanine anion toward chromium(III). The angular overlap model (AOM) parameters obtained indicate that it is electron-donating ligand which has values of e$_{\sigma}O$, e$_{\pi}O$, and e$_{\sigma}N$ slightly lower than those of glycine anion (gly). It seem that the decrease of the ligand field properties is due to steric effect of extra methyl group and inductive effect of adjacent carbonyl group.

Biosynthesis of Two Flavones, Apigenin and Genkwanin, in Escherichia coli

  • The flavonoid apigenin and its O-methyl derivative, genkwanin, have various biological activities and can be sourced from some vegetables and fruits. Microorganisms are an alternative for the synthesis of flavonoids. Here, to synthesize genkwanin from tyrosine, we first synthesized apigenin from p-coumaric acid using four genes (4CL, CHS, CHI, and FNS) in Escherichia coli. After optimization of different combinations of constructs, the yield of apigenin was increased from 13 mg/l to 30 mg/l. By introducing two additional genes (TAL and POMT7) into an apigenin-producing E. coli strain, we were able to synthesize 7-O-methyl apigenin (genkwanin) from tyrosine. In addition, the tyrosine content in E. coli was modulated by overexpressing aroG and tyrA. The engineered E. coli strain synthesized approximately 41 mg/l genkwanin.

Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the PSS-PT-PZ ceramics doped with $La_2$O_3 ($La_2$O_3가 첨가된 PSS-PT-PZ 세라믹의 유전 및 압전특성)

  • (P $b_{1-x}$L $a_{x}$)[(S $b_{1}$2/S $n_{1}$2/) $Ti_{y}$ Z $r_{1-y}$] $O_{3}$(0.leq.x.leq.0.04, 0.25.leq.y.leq.0.40) 세라믹을 1250[.deg.C]에서 2시간동안 유지시켜 일반 소성법으로 제작하였으며 조성 및 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$첨가량에 따른 구조적, 압전적 특성을 관찰하였다. L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$의 첨가량이 3-4[mol%]인 경우 La-rich의 pyrochlore상이 형성되었다. 시편의 평균결정립 크기는 1-2[.mu.n]의 크기를 나타내었으며 PbTi $O_{3}$조성이 증가함에 따라 다소 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 각 조성의 시편에 대해 PbTi $O_{3}$ 및 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$의 첨가량이 증가할수록 유전상수는 증가하는 경향을 나타내었으며 상전이 온도인 큐리온도는 PbTi $O_{3}$조성이 감소할수록 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$첨가량이 증가할수록 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 압전 전하계수 및 전기기계 결합계수는 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$첨가량 및 PbTi $O_{3}$조성에 따라 증가하였으며 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$가 4[mol%]첨가된 0.10PSS-0.40PT-0.50PZ 시편에서 각각 250x$10^{-12}$[C/N], 29.7[%]의 최대값을 나타내었다. 기계적 품질계수는 L $a_{2}$ $O_{3}$첨가량 및 PbTi $O_{3}$조성이 증가할수록 감소하는 경향을 나타내었으며 0.10PSS-0.25PT-0.65PZ 시편에서 138의 최대값을 나타내었다.다.

Electronic and magnetic structure calculations of $La_2MnFeO_6$ with double perovskite oxide (이중 페로브스카이트 구조 $La_2MnFeO_6$의 전자구조와 자기구조 계산)

  • We present results based on FLAPW local spin density(LSD) calculations of double perovskite structure oxide L $a_2$MnFe $O_{6}$ . The total energy calculations with various spin structures show that this material has a stable ferromagnetic spin configuration. The ionic state of transition metals depend on the spin configuration $_Mn^{4+}$ and F $e^{2+}$ for ferromagnetic structure, M $n^{3+}$ and F $e^{3+}$ for ferrimagnetic structure). It is explained by super exchange interaction between transition metals. The calculated magnetic structure is well matched with recent experimental result.ult.t.

  • In the present note, we deal with $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on complete submanifolds with weighted $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ inequality. By supposing submanifold is stable or has sufficiently small total curvature, we establish two vanishing theorems for $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms, which are some extension of the results of Kim and Yun, Sang and Thanh, Cavalcante Mirandola and $Vit{\acute{o}}rio$.

  • Generalizing $Lindel{\ddot{o}}f$ frames and almost compact frames, we introduce a concept of almost $Lindel{\ddot{o}}f$ frames. Using a concept of ${\delta}$-filters on frames, we characterize almost $Lindel{\ddot{o}}f$ frames and then have their permanence properties. We also show that almost $Lindel{\ddot{o}}f$ regular $D({\aleph}_1)$ frames are exactly $Lindel{\ddot{o}}f$ frames. Finally we construct an almost $Lindel{\ddot{o}}fication$ of a frame L via the simple extension of L associated with the set of all ${\delta}$-filters F on L with ${\bigvee}\{x^*{\mid}x{\in}F\}=e$.

Dielectric and electrostrictive properties of (Pb,Ba)(Zr,Ti))$O_3$ ceramics with $Y_2O_3$addition ((Pb,Ba)(Zr,Ti)$O_3$계 세라믹스의 )$Y_2O_3$첨가에 따른 유전 및 전왜 특성)

  • To decrease the hysteresis of electric field induced strain, $Y_{2}$ $O_{3}$ dopant of which amount is 0-0.8wt% was added to the (P $b_{0.73}$B $a_{0.27}$)(Z $r_{0}$ 75/ $Ti_{0.25}$) $O_{3}$ ceramics. Electromechanical coupling coefficients of the specimen with 0.1 Wt% $Y_{2}$ $O_{3}$ were $k_{p}$=26.9% and $k_{31}$ =20.4%, which exhibited the maximum value at the constant bias electric field of 10 kV/cm. At the same $Y_{2}$ $O_{3}$ addition amount, electric field piezoelectric constant ( $d_{3l}$) and strain(.DELTA.l/l) showed the maximum values of 139.6*10$^{-12}$ [C/N] and 126*10$^{-6}$ .DELTA. l/l respectively at 10 kV/cm electric field. And the hysteresis of strain showed the minimum value of 17.5%. So, we propose that it is possible to apply PBZT system with $Y_{2}$ $O_{3}$ dopant to the electrostrictive actuator.r.r.
