  • The measurement of the radiation energy, trunk temperature, leaf area index (LAI), air temperature, vapor pres-sure, and precipitation has been conducted under a mixed forest at Kwangneung Arboretum during the period of 2001. Characteristics of the diurnal and seasonal variation of the radiative energy were investigated. The aerodynamic roughness length was determined as about 1.6 m and the mean albedo was about 0.1 The downward short-wave radiation was linearly correlated with the net radiation and its correlation coefficient was about 0.96. From this linear relation, the heating coefficient was calculated and its annual mean value was about 0.21 The albedo and heating coefficient was varied with season, surface characteristics, and meteorological conditions. The diurnal and seasonal variations of radiation energy were discussed in terms of the surface characteristics and meteorological conditions. In the daytime, during clear skies, net radiation was dominated by the shortwave radiation. In presence of clouds and fog, the radiation energy was diminished. At night, the net radiation was entirely dominated due to the net longwave radiation. There was no distinct diurnal variation in net radiation flux during the overcast or rainy days. The net radiation was strongest in spring and weakest in winter. The seasonal development in leaf area was also reflected in a strong seasonal pattern of the radiation energy balance. The timing, duration, and maximum leaf area and trunk temperature were found to be an important control on radiation energy budget. The trunk temperature was either equal or warmer than air temperature during most of the growing season because the canopy could absorb a substantial amount of sunlight. After autumn (after the middle of October), the trunk temperature was consistently cooler than air temperature.

  • Twenty-one different fungi were tested for their ability to decolorize a wide range of structurally different dyes. Twenty fungal strains were isolated from fruiting bodies which were collected at the Kwangneung National Arboretum, Korea. One fungal strain were isolated from a rotting wood at Soongsil University, Korea. Nine kinds of dyes were used: three anthraquinone dyes and six azo dyes. The five fungal strains, Laetiporus sulphureus, Polyporus arcularius. Auricularia polytricha, Stereum ostrea, and Bjerkandera sp. UK-l showed decolorization ability. Except Auricularia polytricha, the four fungal strains were wood rotting fungi, and belonged to Aphyllophorales. Bjerkandera sp. UK-I, which was a white rot fungus, could decolorize all kinds of dyes tested in this study, indicating this fungus is one of candidates for applying in biological methods of dye waste treatment.

  • $CO_2$ concentration profile was measured to investigate whether $CO_2$ concentration at one level (i.e., eddy covariance measurement level) can be used to estimate storage term without significant uncertainty at broadleaf deciduous forest at Kwangneung experiment forest in Korea. Based on t-test with significance level of 5%, there was no statistical difference between storage term from one-level $CO_2$ concentration and one from $CO_2$ profile measurement. Storage term constitutes on average 5% of half hourly net ecosystem exchange (NEE) even at unstable stability (i.e., well mixed condition), indicating that storage term should be considered even at daytime, which is sometimes neglected.

  • MODIS LAI has been one of key products for analyzing the quantitative aspects ofterrestrial ecology. This study was designed to validate MODIS LAS product by using the reference LAI map that was derived from both ground measurements and ETM+ surface reflectance. The study area, the Kwangneung Experiment Forest in Korea, covers mixed species of deciduous and conifers of temperate forest. Throughout the growing season of 2002, we have measured LAS at the 30 sample plots using an optical device. Ground measured LAS data were then correlated to the ETM+ reflectance to produce a continuous map of LAS over the study area. Preliminary comparison between MODIS LAI and the reference LAI map showed the lower LAI values from the MODIS product.

  • MODIS LAI product has been one of key variable for analyzing the quantitative aspects of terrestrial ecology at global scale. This study was designed to validate MODIS global LAI product for regional application. To examine the quality of MODIS LAI data, we developed a reference LAI surface that was derived by relating the ground LAI measurements to Landsat ETM+ reflectance. The study area, the Kwangneung Experiment Forest in Korea, covers mixed deciduous and coniferous species of temperate forest. Ground measurements of LAI were conducted at 30 sample plots by using a photo-optical instrument during the growing season of 2002. Ground measured LAI data were then related to the ETM+ reflectance to produce a continuous map of LAI surface over the study area. From the comparison between the MODIS LAI and the reference LAI, it was found that the MODIS LAI values were slightly higher at the forestland. Considering the limitations of producing the reference LAI surface and the uncertainty of the input variable for the MODIS LAI algorithm, such small discrepancy mal not be significant.

  • In order to study the ecotypic variation of Rohinia pseudo-acacia L. distributed in southern area of Korean peninsula, 15 local populations(Daejin, Sokcho, Kangneung, Mt. Surak, Hongcheon, Kwangneung, Namhansanseong, Chungju, Yesan, Andong, Jeonju, Dalseong, Changweon, Mokpo and Wando), located from $34^{\circ}18'N\;to\;38^{\circ}36'N$, were selected based on the latitudes and geographical distances. Seeds of these populations were collected and protein contents of seeds and their band patterns were investigated. The seed proteins of all populations were electrophoresed on SDS-polyacrylamide gel. Total number of protein bands were 35, whose molecular weights ranged from 17, 258 daltons to 142, 232 daltons. The number of bands of seed proteins was 23 in Dalseong and Hongcheon and was 32 in Daejin and Sokcho, showing an increasing tendency in the number of bands as the latitude goes high. The local populations were classified into 3 local types based on protein analysis: the middle north east coastal type(Daejin, Sokcho. Kangneung), the central type (Mt. Surak, Hongcheon, Kwangneung, Namhansanseong, Chungju) and the southern type(Yesan, Andong, Jeonju, Dalseong, Changweon, Mokpo, Wando). According to the results of cluster analysis by UPGMA based on the similarity index(c0efficient of Jaccard) of the patterns, 3 local types were subdivided further into 6 types: the middle north east coastal type(Sokcho, Kangneung), the north central type I (Mt. Surak, Hongcheon), the north central type II (Narnhansanseong, Chungju, Daejin), the north central type III (Kwangneung), the south central type (Yesan, Dalseong, Jeonju) and the southern type(Andong, Changweon, Mokpo, Dalseong, Wando). The No. 12 band of the separated seed proteins showed the highest colored density in the preparations from all the populations. The No. 11~13 and No. 23~28 bands also showed high densities. As a whole, southern type populations (Changweon, Mokpo, Wando) showed high protein contents and high colored density. Total protein contents of the seeds in each population were variable from 9. 68mg / g (Mt. Surak) to 17.30mg/g (Jeonju), showing an increasing trends toward low latitudes.

  • In order to study the ecotypic variation of Robinia pseudo-acacza L. distributed in southern area of Korean peninsula, 15 local populations(Daejin, Sokcho, Kangneung, Mt. Surak, Hongcheon, Kwangneung, Namhansanseong, Chungju, Yesan, Andong, Jeonju, Dalseong, Changweon, Mokpo and Wando), located from $34^{\circ}18'N\;to\;38^{\circ}36'N$, were selected based on their latitudes and geographical distances. Seeds of these populations were collected and their germination and growth of seedlings were investigated. The optimum temperature of seed germination tends to decrease with ascending latitudes. The optimum temperatures of local populations were classified into three types: the north central type of $25^{\circ}C$(Daejin, Sokcho, Kangneung, Mt. Surak, Hongcheon, Kwangneung), the south central type of $30^{\circ}C$(Narnhansanseong. Chungju, Yesan, Andong, Jeonju), and the southern type of $35^{\circ}C$(Dalseong, Changweon, Mokpo, Wando). The optimum temperature for the growth of seedlings was $25^{\circ}C$ for all populations. The populations were also classified into three types : north central type, south central type and southern type based on the ranking on the growth of seedlings at 5 different temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, and the results of seedling growth showed similar patterns to those of the seed germination.
