Interrelation between environmental influences on soil microorganisms and it's effect on disease development in ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) field were studied to obtain a preventive measures against the root rot of ginseng caused by soil-borne pathogens in soil in three major Korean ginseng producing areas such as Kumsan, Goesan and Poonggi. Populations of actinomycetes were relatively high in fall season from September to November. Their numbers were highly populated in healthy plot in field than replanted disease field of ginseng, whereas ratio of Trichoderma spp to actinomycetes increased in healthy plot of field indicating the higher numbers of Trichoderma spp pressented in healthy plot field. The numbers of propagules of Trichoderma spp generally increased in early summer through early fall season. Their numbers were also highly populated in the healthy plot of fields. The contents of organic matter and phosphate in healthy plot of field were somewhat high, and phophate/organic matter ratio and Mg content were high in diseased replanted field. All of the soil samples showed a weak acidic pH from 4.5 to 4.7. Soilmoisture content was increased during winter season and it did not show any significant changes curing the growing period, showing 24.6% in healthy plot in field and 19.5% in deseased plot in field respectively. Soil temperature was highest in July and August and lowest in January and February.
Recently many administrative institutes try to improve the viability of rural villages. For increasing the viability, not only infrastructures but internal vitality is necessary in rural villages. Nonetheless, most of governmental projects have been focused on infrastructures. For this reason, RDA(Rural Development Administration) designed and performed the RHL(Rural Healthy and Longevity village) project. This RHL project is not easy to evaluate the outcome because it consists of very intangible project items. In this paper, we developed a scoring model to evaluate the result of the RHL project. The scoring model based on DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) was suggested to evaluate the quantity of personal activities in each village. Personal activities are classified into five categories: regional life, social life, productive life, outdoor life and indoor life. Evaluating indices of each category are developed and weighting values are evaluated by AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process). The developed model was applied to Kumsan village and examined its applicability.
In order to investigate the recognition of processed foods, use of food labeling, and their influencing factors in adolescents, 277(male 125, female 152) middle school students were conveniently selected from Cheonan city, and were surveyed by self-recording questionnaire on June, 2000. Subjects' parents were also surveyed using the similar questionnaire. Food labels of all 222 processed foods collected from stores around schools, were well labeled in most items, but food additives(35.6%) and the origin of major ingredient(27.0) were not well indicated. The recognition score of processed foods was 55.0 out of a full score 100 in students and 68.5 in parents. The scores of students were positively correlated with those of their parents and with father's education years, while negatively correlated with snacking expenses. The rate of reading food labels was significantly different between students(51.3%) and their parents(89.9%). The main purposes of reading food labels, in case of students, were to check expiry date(93.7%), price(70.4%), and how to eat(46.5%) in order. While in parents, those were to check expiry date(95.6%), additives(59.0%), and manufacturer(45.8%). Similarly, the most three important items in food labels were expiry date, price, and quantity to the students, but to the parents they were expiry date, manufacturer, and ingredient. The most significant reason not to confirm food labels was because of small size and complication of labels. The students who did not read food labels had more snacking money and more frequent snacking, and showed lower recognition score of processed food, compared with the students who read food labels. In conclusion, the students did not well recognise processed foods and only a half of them read food labels at purchasing. The recognition score of processed foods, snacking moneys, and snacking frequency may be influencing factors on the reading of food labels in students. The high recognition of processed food of parents may positively affect the students' recognition, but did not affect directly the reading food labels.
Objectives: We surveyed the prevalence of smoking among the adolescent population and analysed the correlation of the two exposure biomarkers-concentration of blood cadmium and urinary cotinine-to the smoking status. Methods: Subjects were 193 middle and high school students in Chungnam province. Blood cadmium and urinary cotinine were compared by sex and smoking status. Smoking status were classified by either the concentration of urinary cotinine or subjective answering as a smoker in the questionnaire. Results: Smoking prevalence was 24.6%, 36.2% and 6.7% among all subjects, male and female subjects, respectively. Average smoking amount was 17.5 and 1.5 cigarettes per month among the male subjects and female subjects, respectively. Mean concentration of urinary cotinine among the male subjects was $135.57{\mu}g/{\ell}$, and that of female subjects was $116.59{\mu}g/$. Direct smokers showed higher concentration of urinary cotinine than those of indirect smokers, and subjects with higher urinary concentration showed higher prevalence of smoking, too. Mean concentration of blood cadmium was $0.0572{\mu}g/d{\ell}$ among the male subjects, and $0.0693{\mu}g/d{\ell}$ among the female subjects. Among the male subjects, both exposure biomarkers showed significant correlation to the smoking status, but among the female subjects urinary cotinine did not show significant correlation to the smoking status. Conclusion: Concentrations of these two biomarkers suggested that this population had significantly high evironmental tobacco smoking(ETS) and efficient stop-smoking programs to reduce ETS should be directed to this population.

In this study, about 80 Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) ecotypes native to Korea were collected annually to analyze their morphology and growth characteristics from 1995 to 2007. Kentucky bluegrass ecotypes with superior characteristics of 'Pureundle' (Trial No. : P38), 'Sewon' (P77), 'Inje' (00034), 'Donggang' (00052), 'Hwasun' (01001), 'Pyengchang' (01071), 'Kongju' (02006), 'Chungsong' (02077), and 'Kumsan' (03005) and three foreign cultivars were transplanted to flowerpots in May 8, 2006 in order to analyze the blooming and morphological characteristics. Out of the selected superior ecotyes, six were collected on the roadsides, two were collected around paddy or dry fields, and one was collected at riverside. Length of 1st internode of 'Chungsong' was the longest (30.7cm), that of 'Pyengchang' was the shortest (12.8cm), and ecotypes showed variation in length. The 1st angle of branches of 'Donggang' was the narrowest ($141.7^{\circ}$), that of 'Hwasun' was the widest ($188.3^{\circ}$), and that of the introduced foreign cultivars were between $159.3^{\circ}$ and $166.7^{\circ}$. The number of nodes of the introduced cultivars were same (six), while that of Korean ecotypes were four to six. Length of flowering culm of 'Chungsong' was the longest (50.7cm) and while that of 'Pyengchang' was the shortest (19.2cm). 'Donggang' with the highest seed yield showed relatively high (36.8cm) inflorescence height when compared to other ecotypes. The five ecotypes of 'Sewon', 'Inje', 'Donggang', 'Pyengchang', and 'Kongju' were investigated to have relatively wide leaf width. Especially 'Sewon' and 'Inje' were investigated to have wide leaves of 4.5mm and over.

This study aims to analyze temporal variation of rural tourist potential in village level. In order to analyze the temporal variation, this study applied a green-tourism potential evaluation model(GPEM) to a study area, Namilmyun with 18 villages, which located on county of Kumsan, province of Chungnam. GPEM consists of two factors about human resources, which is quantified by resident population of the village who will be participated in village management for green-tourism, and amenity resources, which is calculated by an evaluation table with 31 criteria and their weighting values. Data surveying for the study area was performed at August 2003 and 2006, respectively, in order to quantity the 31 evaluation criteria of GPEM. From the analysis results, the amenity resources with three sub-classes of industrial, natural, and social resources showed that the evaluation values of 2006 were increased in more than those of 2003, displaying the increase rate of ranging from 108% to 112% in the three sub-classes, except of one village in social resources and three village in natural resources with reduction. In human resources, the evaluation values of 2006 were highly increased more than those of 2003, showing the rate of 556% in the gradient of linear regression line. In green tourism potential in each village, the evaluation results for two time series showed that the potential is increased by time, which the increase rate of the potential is 114%. Ultimately, the results of this study enable us to realize that the green-tourism potential in each village over time is increased, for example, due to developing new facilities in the village by investment of government and participating in rural tourism by resident people over time. From the analysis and results, the methodology of this study can be applied to analyze the temporal variation of the potential for villages having investment from government.
In this study, for integrated management and inter-exchange of operational data generated by ships and land-side information on safe and business, a vessel communication system with modular functions was designed that applied high efficiency compression, least-cost algorithms and Inmarsat FBB connection automation system. Performance test at the KTsat Kumsan satellite earth station; system was found to delivered an average transfer speed of 7 kB/S, which was significant improvement from the existing commercial product's average speed of 5 kB/S. It also delivered twice the efficiency of the existing product in terms of compression rate and transfer of the most widely used office files in maritime businesses.
The prevalence of intestinal parasites and CLonorchis sinensis infection was observed among inhabitants in the upper stream of Kumgang (River) from Junuary to October 1991. A total of 743 fecal specimens was examined by cellophane thick smear and formalin-ether concentration technique. The parasite positive rate including helminth eggs and protozoan cysts was 40.8%, the positive rates for every species were: Clonorchis sinensis 30.8%, Metqgonimur app. 14.5%, Fosciolc spry. 0.7%, Tqsnia app. 1.5%, Asccris lumbricoides 0.4%, Enterobius vermicularis 0.1%, Hookworm 0.1%, Trichuris kichiura 1.6%, Entamoeba coli 0.7%, E. histolytica 0.3%, Endolimox nana 0.3%, Giardia lamblia 0.3% and lodamoebc buetschlii 0.1%, respectively. The cumulative positive rate in Okchon-gun showed 51.1%, in the Kumsan-gun 50.8% and in the Muju-gun 28.6%. Through this survey, it was concluded that the soil transmitted intestinal parasites including helminthseggs and protozoan cysts have been decreased remarkably among the inhabitants along the upper stream of Taechong Dam, Kum-gang (River), on the other side, Clonorchis sinensis, Metogonimw app. and Tuenin sap. are still inorderate prevalent. Key words: Intestinal parasites, Clonorchis sinensis, Metogonimus app. Fasciolc sup. Kumgang (River).
In order to investigate the use and recognition of nutrition labelings of processed foods which adolescents frequently purchase, 277(boys 125, girls 152) middle school students and their parents were conveniently selected from the west Chonan City, and were surveyed by self-recording questionnaire on June, 2000. Nutrition labels were indicated only in 14.9% of 222 processed snack foods. At purchasing foods the students considered taste most importantly and in turn price, quantity, and nutrition. Of the subjects 79.4% of students and 89.2% of parents had experiences of reading nutrition labels, and the reasons were mainly to just know contained nutrients(76.8%, 72.1%, respectively) and for their health care(35.9%, 47.8%, respectively). The main reason not to confirm nutrition labels was that they were not interested in nutrition labels. But too small size and rudeness or hardness of understanding was also pointed out as a reason of not reading nutrition labels. The students ranked mineral, protein, and carbohydrate as the most important three nutrients at labelings, while the parents ranked protein, mineral, and calorie. Cholesterol, dietary fibers, and sodium were shown the lowest rank in both students and parents. Significant nutrients for specific processed foods did not well recognised in the students. Conclusively, nutrition labelings should be applied to all processed foods which students frequently buy, particularly in clear and large size. Also it is necessary to prepare education programs for both students and parents about accurate recognition of nutrition knowledge about processed foods and how to use nutrition labels.
About four hundred deposits of iron, talc, fluorite, tungsten, molybdenum, lead, zinc and other polymetallic mineral deposits were plotted on the Ore Distribution Map of the Ockcheon Geosynclinal Area. These mineral deposits plotted on the map can be divided into the several metallogenic zones by the consideration of their geologic background including the sedimentary and tectonic cycles and the igneous activities in the geosynclinal evolution, as follows: a. Chungju iron and talc zones. b. Cheong-san copper bearing iron sulphide zone c. Kumsan-Muju fluorite-polymetallic zones. d. Cheong-an Puyong and Ein Suckseong gold zone e. Hwang-gan Seolcheon and Sangju gold zones. Chungju iron zone originated in the iron bed in the Kemyongsan Series corresponding to the Pre-Ockcheon Cycle of evolution history. In early period of the Ockcheon Cycle, Hyangsanri quartzite and Munjuri phyllitic formation corresponding to the lower terrigenous sequence were not mineralized while the next sequence of the Samsungsan basic igneous-metamorphic formation and the Changri limestone formation were mineralized by the copper bearing iron sulphide and the fluorite-polymetallic deposits respectively. Two generations of the gold zones are recognized. The earlier generation distributes directionaly in the outside of the Ockcheon sedimentary belt was followed by the earlier grantitic invasion of Jurasic in age, while the later generation scatters at random which was related to the nondirectional Cretaceous granitic intrusion of the Post-Ockcheon Cycle. Conclusively speaking, it was disclosed that the endogenic mineralization in the Ockcheon geosyn clinal zone was not conspicuous in its inner sedimentary belt except its limestone area but in its outer peripheral granitic or gneissic zones, and the related igneous activities occured in the Post-Ockcheon Cycle of evolution history.
