  • This study estimates the pollution load in a basin by regional groups analyzing the relationship between the discharge and pollution load. The study area is placed in the Miho stream basin known as the main tributary of the Kum river. Four major Telemetary streamflow stations are chosen. In this research, discharge and water quality in a dry season and a flood season from the observed discharge in the stream are analyzed. The Rating-Curve and the Pollutograph are drawn analyzing discharge and water quality at the major stations. The characteristics of runoff for each stream are analyzed and the change of water quality are analyzed for rainfall period. The relationship between discharge and water quality has been investigated. The relationship between the discharge and pollution load is analyzed and a representative equation is derived. These relationships permit an estimates of the pollution load at the Miho stream basin. basin.

  • This paper describes the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the real time reservoir operation that aims to maximize the flood control effect. In the decision support system, model base and real time data processing subsystem are included along with the graphical user interface(GUI) that is able to visualize the forecasted runoff hydrographs at the flood control points and reservoir water levels resulting from the model run as well as the current hydrologic status. The system was verified through the pseudo real time applications to the Taechong reservoir operation with the historical flood events of the Kum river basin occurred in July, 1987 and August, 1995, Decision making processes were performed using the developed system and the results were compared with the real operations at that time. The reservoir operation using the pseudo real time application of DSS were simulated by the flood runoff simulation model, that shows the reservoir operation by DSS were successful in flood control for the lower Kum River.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the application techniques, such as geometrical correction, image overlapping etc., of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper image data especially useful to the geomorphological study of tidal flats. The developed processing techniques were applied to the Kum river estuary. The results of this study are as follows. 1) According to the analysis of the distribution and topographical profiles of the tidal flats, the geomorphological characteristics of the study area seem to be different depending on their location. 2) Even though the geomorphological changes were not always observable on the satellite images, several areas of undoubtful short-term deposition could be detected on the analytical map-image which compares two different situations of tidal flats. 3) Even though a further ditailed study is necessary, the distribution and dispersal patterns of suspended materials and sea surface temperature distribution patterns due to tidal and other meteorological conditions were analyzed by LANDSAT TM channel 3 and 6.

  • This paper centers around the etymological meanings of place names of the Kumkang region, restricting the discussion to a selected group of place names which make it possible to infer their cultural characteristics in the light of the latitudinal or longitudinal isoglosses. The legends of Komnaru and Choryongdae, for instance, derive directly from place names. Dialectal distribution is examined on the basis of the phonological features that are not very different between upper and lower reaches of the Kumkang river. The dialects get much more similar as they go further down to the lower region of the river. The original "Komanara(熊津)", also called "Northern Headland(北津)", underwent the sound change of Komannaru > Komkang > Kumkang(錦江), the last being alternatively abbreviated as Kum(錦). During the last half of the 14th century-around the close of the Koryo dynasty, that is-a literary work gave the beautified name "Nakhwa-am"(落花巖), meaning 'rock-bluff of falling flowers', to what was originally called Tasa-am(墮死岩), so-called because, in the year of 660 when the Paekje dynasty was being ravaged by the invading enemy, a number of court-ladies ended their lives by plunging into the river from there. It was 'a number of court-ladies'(諸後宮) who died; but by tradition of popular songs, the number has become "three thousand" - a case of hyperbole of course.

  • With the evolution of containerization and globalization of supply chains, aspects of port functions have made the transition from the sea to the inland region that forms the dry port. To explore the relationship between dry ports and regional economic development, this study uses a gravity model and forecast model to analyze 1,040 observations in 104 cities (22 dry port cities) along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2008 to 2017. The model includes economic variables, logistics variables, foreign relations variables, and human capital variables. It was found that the dry port is positively correlated with trade volume. Compared with a city without a dry port, the trade volume of a city with a dry port will increase 0.099 times. It can be concluded that a dry port is crucial for the economic development of the YREB. It was also found that per capita GDP as an economic variable, road area and rail number as logistics variables, and foreign relation variables are positively correlated with trade volume, while the human capital variable has no significant effect on trade volume. In addition, governmental policy implications are addressed from the aspects of dry port and industry cluster caused by foreign investment.

  • This study looks into existing discussion about the entry time and the geographical criteria point of 'Ho-Nam' as a place name. And discusses the reason which the geographical criteria point is not clear with emphasis on the possibility of the geographical range change of place name. The result is as follows. Firstly, the regional criteria of 'Ho-Nam' is Kum-River if we consider direction and the role as a regional barrier among the existing offered criteria. Secondary, the criteria of Ho-Nam and Ho-Seo might be different each other. A place name of Ho-Nam had appeared before Chosun period as a geographical concept and changed to the cultural concept during Chosun period. And Ho-Seo was established in Chosun period. But 'Ho-Nam=Jeon-la Province' and 'Ho-Seo=Chung-cheong Province' is established during Chosun period as a cultural concept. Thirdly, the geographical range of Ho-Nam of Go-Ryeo period and Chosun period were different each other. Fourthly, the criteria of Ho-Nam may be the Han-River if we consider the entry time and geographical range change.

  • The characteristics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation at 28 water treatment plants in Korea were investigated. Investigated species of DBPs were trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs) and chloral hydrate (CH). The maximum concentration of THMs was $84.1{\mu}g/L$, minimum and the averages were $6.9{\mu}g/L$ and $27.8{\mu}g/L$, respectively; the maximum concentration of $HAA_5$ was $90.8{\mu}g/L$, minimum and the averages were $3.8{\mu}g/L$ and $26.7{\mu}g/L$, respectively; while the maximum concentration of CH was $29.5{\mu}g/L$, minimum and the averages were $0.5{\mu}g/L$ and $7.4{\mu}g/L$, respectively. On the other hand, DBPs levels during summer months, when the water temperature was near $25^{\circ}C$, were nearly twice as great as DBPs levels during the winter season. The ratio of $THMs/HAA_5$ was 1.07, and $HAA_5$ and THMs were the dominant species of DBPS in the Kum-Sumjin river and Nakdong river, respectivley.

  • The fish fauna and Community were surveyed from April 2000 to September 2001 at 23 stations in the nam river, the first tributary located to the lower reach of the Nakdong River system. During the study period, 39 species belonging to 29 genera and 11 families were collected. Of which 14 species are endemic species or subspecies in Korea. Introduced species from other river system, O. bidens had not been collected at all after the report of Yang (1973) but many individuals were captured at main stream and tributary in this survey. Introduced species from abroad M. salmoides increased at most of stations. Dominant species in main stream were Z. platypus, O. bidens and H. labeo. On the contrary, Z. temmincki, Z. platypus and S. gracilis majimae dominated the tributaries. Diversity indices of main stream and tributaries were 0,979 and 0.966 respectively. St. 3 of main stream and St.1 and 16 of tributaries had high diversity indices (1.05, 0.962, 0.956) and lower dominant indices (0.102, 0.369, 0.200). As a whole, dominant index was 0.160, diversity index 1.044 and evenness index 0.656. It indicated that the community structure of this river was stable and diverse relatively.
