  • This study is to research and analyse the Musicians' Costumes in Yi dynasty. Each costume for the musicians was, at that time, different in its design and style in accordance with what class the musicians were belonging to and what ceremony they were playing for, and the form and substance of them were changed according to the ages. In the early of Yi dynasty, the musicians wore their costumes imitated from the Song dynasty's. Especially in the 13th year of King Sae-Jong(1431), they divided the costumes into A-ag-Seo Jeon-ag Gwan-bog(雅樂署 典樂冠服) and Jeon-ag-Seo Gwan-bog(典樂署冠服). Meanwhile the musicians had to put on their different kinds of costumes according to the sorts of ceremonies they were playing for since January of the 16th year of king Sae-Jong(1434). It is widely known that confucianism was made a national policy in Yi dynasty. Compared the musicians' costumes for sacrificial rituals, however, with those for every kind of ceremony, one was simpler and shabbier without any strictly established forms than the other. At the same time, the musicians' costumes for ceremonies were, instead, designed in more gorgeous forms; it means that the sacrificial ritual was very lightly dealt at that time. It is very difficult to define, by standard pictures the whole style and form of the musicians' costumes in Yi dynasty in this study. Since we haven't shown any examples of the costumes, this attempt will be keepful.

Experiences of Mothers Participating in Consultant Training to Build an Early Childhood Education Community: Changes in Self-Awareness (유아교육공동체 구현을 위한 컨설턴트 양성과정 참여 어머니의 경험: 자기 인식의 변화)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of mothers who participated in the training of consultants for the purposes building an early childhood educational community. Methods: Participants were 14 mothers in the first phase, 10 mothers in the second phase, and 8 mothers in the third phase. Data were collected from stories shared during the learning community activities. The mothers' experiences were analyzed according to qualitative analysis procedures. Results: Mothers' experiences of participating in the training of consultant for building early childhood educational community were categorized into three themes and seven sub-themes. The first theme was "self as a parent" including "looking inside myself in the parent-child relationships" and "looking inside myself in the relations with other mothers". The second theme was "self as a member of the community" which consisted of "sharing emotions through ritual", "forming communitarian identity through hospitality and solidarity" and "growing as a social mother". The third theme was "self as a educational community consultant" out of which emerged "setting up shared visions", "building practical community competence", and "creating fields of community implementation". Conclusion: The results suggested there are implications for the effective practices of building an early childhood education community and the direction and methodology of parent education.

Research on the Drinking Culture of the Choseon dynasty's Ruling Class using Semantic Network Analysis

  • In this study, the drinking culture of the Choseon dynasty is examined with the text frequency analysis technique on the entire 『Choseonwangjosilok (朝鮮王朝實錄)』. This study examined a total of 1,968 volumes and 948 books about 27 kings of Choseon , which spans a total of 518 years, through web crawling on the National Institute of Korean History website. Python 3.8 was used to extract sentences related to alcohol, Rhino 1.4.5 was used for morphological analysis to extract nouns, and Gephi 0.9.2 was used for semantic network analysis. According to 『Choseonwangjosilok (朝鮮王朝實錄)』 about alcohol culture, the results of the analysis are as follow: Alcoholic beverages were more often used in court or in ritual ceremonies rather than those based on specific ingredients or manufacturing methods commonly used by the general public. regarding the ruling class through semantic network analysis l in the 『Choseonwangjosilok (朝鮮王朝實錄)』, the Choseon dynasty was found to be highly associated with political issues related to maintaining the power relations within the Korean royal court system. At times, alcohol was used to maintain personal relationships, while at other times it was seen as an essential item in state ceremonies. It was also used as a highly political means to maintain and strengthen national power.

Palace Operation of Goryeo and the Reform of the Palace System in Early Joseon (고려의 궁궐 운영과 조선 초의 궁궐제도 정비)

  • This study examines the transitional situation that can be seen from the palace operation in early Joseon Dynasty. The first decades of Joseon after the nation was founded differ from the Joseon Dynasty as a whole, but rather similar with the Goryeo Dynasty. By examining "The History of Goryeo(高麗史)," it showed that palace operation during the Goryeo Dynasy was marked by the fact that a separate palace was built and resided in despite the existence of the Bongweol(本闕, main palace) as the central palace. The separation of the parent's generation and the children's generation was shown through the establishment of one's own palace. Such trait of Goryeo affected palace construction directly after the founding of Joseon. This can be shown from the characteristic of palace operation by generation. The construction of the Changdeokgung Palace(昌德宮) of King Taejong, as his own palace, is an example. Afterwards, the palace system of Joseon was established, and the space of the king and the crown prince was merged through ritual reform during the reign of King Sejong. However, the space for the parents of the king were considered separate, and this influence continued to the reign of King Seongjong. The construction of Changgyeonggung Palace(昌慶宮) during the reign of King Seongjong is an event where the king proclaimed the separation with his mother and grandmother.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the species and to date the coffin woods that were excavated at a tomb (husband and wife) in Hopyungri, Namyngju, Korea. Twenty-three wood specimens of the two coffins were analyzed for identifying their species. All coffin woods were Pinus spp. (hard pine). 'Sabs'(ritual utensils that prevent demon) were made from Tilia spy. Tree-ring dating proved that the husband's coffin was made from the wood which was cut around 1620 and the wife's one at a little earlier period.

  • This study has main purpose to understand and interpret the house Nok-U-dang, an upper class built in Chosun dynasty, not by outsider researcher's view but insider dweller's view. To interpret correctly, dweller's everyday life in the space and form is examined on a microscale beyond the physical space and form of the house, main object of architectural history To understand the present form exactly, the study restore traditional life in past era, 1940s. Main method of restoration is the ethnographic interview, based on cultural anthropology. Like any other upper-class house, the house has been influenced under ruling Confucian ideology in Chosun dynasty: separation of man's and woman's quarters and hierachical arrangement by generation, and worshipping ceremony for ancestor. However, it is by practical management for agricultural production that every court and building of the Noku-Dang can be explained correctly; preparing seed for sowing, tool storing, preparing and serving meal for laborers, making manure, harvesting, threshing grain, storing grain and so on. Precedent studies interpreted the house by the Confucian principle too much and made conclusion of dignity and austerity of ritual: woman's quarter, is closed and serene space. However this study shows that the space is semi-opened and composite space by agricultural works. And the Sarangchae, master's quarter, is located properly at visual center to control every agricultural activity.

  • Geum'yeok-dang house in Andong was originally constructed in 1558. The original floor plan of the upper base featured a 90-degree tilted '日' shape, and had inner court(內庭) on each side of 'Jungdang(中堂, center hall)' building that was placed on the south-north axis. When designing the building, the Neo-Confucian client of Geum'yeok-dang applied his understanding of how Ga'rye("家禮") defined the structure of ritual space. Consequently, 'Daecheong(大廳)', the place where guests were greeted and ancestral rites and coming of age ceremonies for male were held, was built in a protruding fashion. 'Jungdang'[otherwise known as 'Jeongchim(正寢)'], where coming of age ceremonies for females were held, the master of the house faced death, and memorials for close ancestors were held, was placed at the center of the residence on the south-north axis. The Geum'yeok-dang today was greatly renovated in the early and mid 18th century, due to the spread of 'Ondol' heating system. As the Ondol heating system became popular, the pre-existing drawbacks and the inconvenience of the house stood out clearly. As a result, the house was renovated into today's structure consisting of '口' shape 'Anchae' and 'Daecheongchae' in separate building.

A Study on the Taepyeonggwan, Mohwagwan and the Architects Contrived these Architectures as Shown in The annals of the J oseon Dynasty of 15C (실록에 나타나는 15세기 태평관·모화관 건축과 관련 인물연구)

  • This study is based on the 15th century's architecture Mohwagwan and Taepyeonggwan and the architects behind it. The results were as follows: First, inline with Ming dynasty's protocol, the King of Joseon marched with honor guard in front of his people. Therefore, the Joseon dynasty needed to match space was implemented and result in Mohwagwan and Taepyeonggwan. Second, King Taejong founded Mohwaru to share the role with Taepyeonggwan. He appropriately utilized Mohwaru as a place in manners before people enter the Seoul city wall. And He organized this architecture on the level of the palace. Third, Pak Jacheong was overseer the whole constructive process, from the selection of site, landscaping, construction, maintenance to civil engineering of Mohwaru. There are many difficulties, but he completed through the construction work owing to the protection of King Taejong. Forth, Hong Li worked with Pak Jacheong to build Taepyeonggwan and Mohwagwan from Taejong to Sejong. Supervisors in King Sejong times were required not only private capability but also understanding the Confucianism ritual. Hong Li was faithfully performed the role. Fifth, Sejong was recognized only an excellent ruler but he was also a great coordinator with a professional knowledge about architecture. These Sejong's action fully can be seen as an architect.

  • This study aims at searching the Church Building Type and Design Sources of a German church architect who had designed many churches and other buildings in Korea. P. Alwin Schmid(1904-1978) had designed 188 Catholic buildings in Korea for 20 years from 1958 to 1978. In his works there are many excellent Catholic ritual buildings. It was caused by his conviction on the theology and the principles of Church Architecture. And His remarkable achievement is affected by the works of Dominikus Bom(1880-1955) and Rudolf Schwarz(1897-1961). Alwin's 5 plan type is relevant to Schwarz' iconographic model, and their approach to 'light' is much the same. But the Character of inner space is the middle of Dominikus Bom and Rudolf Schwarz. His works rotted in the Liturgical Movement had been developed in the line of connection with 20th German church architecture. The works of Dominikus Bom and Rudolf Schwarz played the role of the teacher of Alwin Schwarz.

A Study on the Change of NaInGaGa(Female Space) at the Royal Tomb in the Late Joseon Dynasty (조선후기 산릉의 여성공간, 나인가가(內人假家)의 변화에 관한 연구)

  • On behalf of the royal women, SangGung(尙宮:The head of female servants in the palace) and NaIns(內人: Female servants caring for royal families in the palace) were dispatched in order to attend a funeral at the royal tomb. The NaInGaGa(內人假家) is the temporary building for SangGung and NaIns in the royal tomb. It is comprised of lodgings for them and also workrooms and warehouses to prepare ritual offering for the dead King or Queen. In the early Joseon dynasty, the NaInGaGa was utilized until a funeral at the royal tomb. Since 1674, NaInGaGa for the 3 years-period lamentation was started constructing separately. At these processes, the plan and placement of NaInGaGa was changed. This study based on the SanReungDoGam-EuiGwae (山陵都監-儀軌: The report on constructing royal tomb). The SanReungDoGam-EuiGwae written since 1800 have illustration about NaInGaGa. The illustration and explanation about NaInGaGa become a important clue that make suppose detailed space of NaInGaGa.
