  • In this paper the word recognition using sub-model based Hidden Markov Model was studied. Phoneme models were composed of 61 phonemes in therms of Korean language pronunciation characteristic. Using this, word model was maded by serial concatenation. But, in case of this phoneme concatenation, the second and the third phoneme of syllable are overlapped in distribution at the same time. So considering this, the method that combines the second and the third phoneme to one model was proposed. And to prevent the increase in number of model, similar phonemes were combined to one, and finially, 57 models were created. In experiment proper model structure of sub-model was searched for, and recognition results were compared. So similar recognition results were maded, and overall recognition rates were increased in case of using parameter tying method.

  • Although previous speech analysis programs usually provide speech analysis and phoneme labeling functionalities, they require much time in manual labeling and support only English alphabets. To solve these problems, we develop a new Windows-based program with an improved phoneme and tone labeling method as well as the conventional speech analysis functionalities. The developed program has the unique feature in semi-automatic phoneme and tone labeling based on hidden Markov models.

  • In this paper, we study the usage of phoneme duration information for rejection garbage sentence. First, we build a phoneme duration modeling in a speech recognition system based on dicicion tree state tying, We assume that phone duration has a Gamma distribution. Next, we build a verification module in which word-level confidence measure is used. Finally, we make a comparative study on phoneme duration with speech DB obtained from the live system. This DB consistes of OOT(out-of-task) and ING(in-grammar) utterences. the usage of phone duration information yields that OOT recognition rate is improved by 46% and that another 8.4% error rate is reduced when combined with utterence verification module.

  • In Video, key frame generated from the scene change detection is to perform character recognition through the projections. The separation between the text are separated by a vertical projection. Phoneme is separated Cho-sung, Jung-sung, and Jong-sung and is divided 6 types. Phoneme pattern is separated to suitable 6 types through the horizontal projection. Phoneme are separated horizontal, vertical, diagonal, reverse-diagonal direction. Phoneme is recognized using the 4-direction projection and location information.

  • This study investigated the development of English phonological awareness in preschool children based on a longitudinal study. It carried out a phonological matching task, mispronunciation task, articulation test, explicit phoneme awareness task, rhyme matching task, and initial-phoneme matching task for three-, four- and five-year-old children. A letter knowledge test was also added to the tests for the 5-year-old children. The results revealed that the development of phonological awareness follows a progression of syllable, then onset and rhyme, then phoneme. It was also revealed that language skills such as vocabulary, detection of mispronunciations, and articulation were partially related to the development of phoneme awareness. Finally, we also found that letter knowledge partially affected the children's development of phonological awareness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to generate a pitch contour which is affected by tile phonetic environment and the number of syllables in each Korean isolated word using a neural network. To do this, we analyzed a set of 513 Korean isolated words, consisting of 1-4 syllables and extracted the pitch contour and the duration of each phoneme in all the words. The total number of phonemes we analyzed is about 3800. After that we approximated the pitch contour with a 1st order polynominal by a regression analysis. We could get the slope, the initial pitch and the duration of each phoneme. We used these 3 parameters as the target pattern of the neural network and let the neural network learn the rule of the variation of the pitch and duration, which was affected by the phonetic environment of each phoneme. We used 7 consecutive phoneme strings as an input pattern for a neural network to make the network learn the effect of phonetic environment around the center phoneme. In the learning phase, we used 3545 items(463 words) as target patterns which contained the phonetic environment of front and rear 3 phonemes and the neural network showed the correctness rate of 98.43%, 98.59%, 97.7% in the estimation of the duration, the slope, the initial pitch. In the recall phase, we tested the performance of tile neural network with 251 items(50 words) which weren't need as learning data and we could get the good correctness rate of 97.34%, 95.45%, 96.3% in the generation of the duration, the slope, and the initial pitch of each phoneme.

  • In the field of speech recognition, the research area can be classified into the following two categories: one which is concerned with the development of phoneme-level recognition system, the other with the efficiency of word-level recognition system. The resonable phoneme-level recognition system should detect the phonemic boundaries appropriately and have the improved recognition abilities all the more. The traditional LPC methods detect the phoneme boundaries using Itakura-Saito method which measures the distance between LPC of the standard phoneme data and that of the target speech frame. The MFCC methods which treat spectral transitions as the phonemic boundaries show the lack of adaptability. In this paper, we present new speech recognition system which uses auto-correlation method in the phonemic boundary detection process and the multi-layered Feed-Forward neural network in the recognition process respectively. The proposed system outperforms the traditional methods in the sense of adaptability and another advantage of the proposed system is that feature-extraction part is independent of the recognition process. The results show that frame-unit phonemic recognition system should be possibly implemented.

  • This study was carried out to reveal Hangul acquisition processes in Korean-Chinese children who grow in a horizontal bilingual environment. In this experiment Grapheme substitution/deletion tasks and sensible/non-sensible Kulja reading tasks were administered to 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old Korean-Chinese children growing up in a bilingual environment. Results were that Korean-Chinese children showed similar patterns of Hangul acquisition processes to Korean children but acquired grapheme-phoneme(G-P) correspondence earlier than Korean children. Hangul acquisition rates were 41.7%, 45.7%, 53% and 92.7% at age 3, 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Both Korean-Chinese and Korean children showed higher sensitivity for the final consonant than for the initial and middle consonants. Correlation between phoneme perception and reading was only significant among 6-year-olds in non-sensible Kulja reading tasks. Training in transforming ideographic Chinese to a phonetic system could effect early acquisition of G-P correspondence in Korean-Chinese children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the syllable and phoneme frequencies in the spontaneous speech of some Korean children. Sixty four normally developing children aged from 2 to 5 were involved (male: female=1 : 1, 16 children in each age group). Fifty connected utterances were analyzed using the KCLA (Korean Computerized Language Analysis) 2.0 and Exel. The findings were as follows: 1) /i/ was the most frequently used syllable and was followed by /yo/, /k/, /s'/, /nen/ and so on. 2) The most frequently used Korean phonemes were syllable-initial consonant /k/, syllable- medial vowel /a/ and syllable-final consonant /n/. 3) All seven syllable final consonants (/p,t,k,m,n,n,l/) were used more frequently in the word-medial position than in the word-final position. Three syllable initial consonants(/k, I, s'/) were used more frequently in the word-medial position than in the word-initial position. The syllable and phoneme frequencies in the Korean children's spontaneous speech will provide valuable information in interpreting the severity of phonological disorder and in developing tools for the Korean phonological assessment and intervention.

  • This paper presented the method about the Implementation of Speech Recognition based on phoneme considering the phonological characteristic for Korean Subway Station Names. The Pronunciation dictionary considering PLU set and phonological variations with four Case in order to select the optimum PLU used for Speech Recognition based on phoneme for Korean Subway Station Names was comprised and the recognition rate was estimated. In the case of the applied PLU, we could know the optimum recognition rate(97.74%) be shown in the triphone model in case of considering the recognition unit division of the initial consonant and final consonant and phonological variations.
