  • Jinhae Bay is a typical aquaculture farm with active fisheries. However, it has been contaminated by the development of a major city and industrial area, and has therefore diminished in value as a fishing ground. To preserve the continuing productivity of the ocean, we have to estimate fisheries resources. To analyze the fisheries resources in Jinhae Bay, we evaluated the Fisheries Productivity Index (FPI). The FPI is composed of the Total production ($T_p$), Total amount ($T_a$), and Production of edible protein ($E_p$), nitrogen ($N_p$) and phosphorous ($P_p$). To calculate the FPI, we used Annual statistics on cooperative sales of fishery products data from 1979 to 2004 and the Food composition table. The results of the FPI were as follows. $T_p$ ranged from 70,235 tons to 113,556 tons and $T_a$ ranged from 107,004 million won to 373,776 million won. $E_p$ ranged from 8,124 tons to 13,357 tons, $N_p$ ranged from 1,965 tons to 3,273 tons, and $P_p$ ranged from 168 tons to 276 tons. According to the FPI, maximum fisheries productivity occurred in 1994, when $T_a$, $E_p$, $N_p$ and $P_p$ were at their highest values.

  • Fish catches by a set net from January 2007 to November 2009 were analyzed to assess fish species composition and seasonal variations in the coast of Gijang, Korea. Over 389 kg fish representing 78 species, 45 families and 17 orders were collected during three years of the study. Dominant species were jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus, anchovy Engraulis japonicus and herring Clupea palasii, and these three species comprised 67.3% of the total number of individuals and 60.7% of the total biomass. Size distribution of the dominant species for jack mackerel, anchovy and herring ranged from 2.2 cm to 22.6 cm, from 2.5 cm to 14.8 cm, from 4.0 cm to 29.0 cm in fork length, respectively. Anchovy was the only species that occurred throughout all seasons in the Gijang coast. Generally, species richness was highest in spring (April to June) when sea temperature began to increase.

  • The fisheries industry has led the Korean economy, and has been achieving high-level position in the world. However, this industry meets aging, low growth and profit. In order to overcome this critical situation, it is needed to understand the overall status of industry. In industry level, most of previous researches focused on ocean industry rather than fisheries. In addition, scholars have been getting a lot of attention about fisheries cooperatives, fishing-ports, methods of fishery, and manufacturing process in fisheries sector. The aim of this research is analysis of domestic fisheries industry's managerial performance using data envelopment analysis(DEA) considering operating and scale view. Furthermore, the comparative analysis is performed by firm size, and industry type. In results, fisheries industry's managerial performance is not high, overall. In more detail, most of big size firms are under decreasing returns to scale(DRS) status. Fishery processing industry's performance is low, and fishery distribution industry has the best performance. This paper suggests that transferring operating capability from big firms to small firms, and policy supports and firm's activities should be accompanied for high-value added in fisher, and fishery processing industries.

  • We investigated the maturity and spawning of the brown sole Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini, in the coastal waters of the East Sea off Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, South Korea, using samples collected by gill net and longline fishery from January 2018 to December 2019. We analyzed oocyte development, monthly maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and total length at maturity. Histological analysis of ovarian development in P. herzensteini revealed that the development was group-synchronous. The spawning peak in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk occurred from April to May and from February to March, respectively. Thus, the spawning season in Gangwon was 1-2 months later than that in Gyeongbuk. The length at 50% maturity for females was estimated as 24.2 cm and 19.0 cm in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, respectively. Similarly, the length at 50% maturity for males was estimated as 19.8 cm and 16.5 cm in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, respectively.

  • The feeding habits of the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii were examined based on 333 specimens collected from the coastal waters of the East Sea of Korea. Sampling was conducted in April, June, and September 2019 and February 2020. The total length of the C. pallasii ranged from 11.9 cm to 37.7 cm. Euphausiids (93.0%, index of relative importance, IRI), especially Euphausia, comprised the primary diet of the pacific herring, in addition to amphipods, copepods, and fishes. The dietary composition of C. pallasii showed non-significant differences by size. As body size of C. pallasii increased, the mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST) and the mean weight of preys per stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase.

  • The production of the North Korea fisheries industry has been steadily falling since it reached its peak in the 1980s. The production of thefisheries industry is an important indicator of the current status and changes in the North Korea fisheries industry as a whole. This study reviewed the production volume of the North Korea fishery and derived changes and characteristics of the North Korea fisheries from the standpoint of production changes. Changes in North Korea's fisheries industry in the situation of falling production are as follows. First, the production of capture fisheries has fallen sharply. Second, the production of seaweed farming increased. In particular, the production of kelp farming has increased rapidly since the 1970s. Third, North Korea is trying to diversify its production means to cope with the decline in production. The characteristics of the North Korea fisheries from the viewpoint of falling production are as follows. First, the proportion of seaweed aquaculture in the fishery output is excessively high. In particular, the proportion of kelp is high. Second, production facilities are concentrated in the East Sea. Third, there is little production of fish farming using deep-sea fishing and sea sponges. Fourth, the production of the fisheries industry is falling continuously in the long term.

  • The small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis is an important ecological and commercial species in the waters of Korea. Based on samples purchased monthly from a market from 2019 to 2021, except during the closed season, we analyzed the age and growth of the small yellow croaker using 894 otoliths. The total lengths of the small yellow croaker ranged from 12.0 to 38.9 cm, which is a sufficient length range for analyzing age structure and growth parameters. The translucent zone, formed during the spawning season in June, was counted as the annual mark. The estimated ages were 0-10 years, and the 38.9 cm individuals were 7 years old, while the 34.2 cm individuals were 10 years old. The highest proportion in this study (86.8%) was 0-3 years. The von Bertalanffy growth model was obtained as Lt=41.2(1-exp-0.20(t+1.50)).

  • We studied the age and growth of anchovies Engraulis japonicus, collected using three different fishing gears (drag net, set net, and bottom trawl) in the South Sea of Korea from November 2020 to October 2021.To determine the age, 344 speciemens were analyzed by reading the otolith sagittal plane. Monthly changes in the growth of translucency at the edge and the marginal increment ratio revealed that annuli in otoliths were fully formed in March once a year. We compared four different types of growth equations, and found that the data set of observed length at age (yearly) as estimated the growth parameter (L = FL 16.17 cm, k = 0.33/year, t0 = -1.65) fitted well on the von Bertalanffy growth curve.

  • The purpose of this study was to raise some questions about the supply and demand statistics of fisheries products and to find implications for food supply and demand. There are three problems in the statistics of fisheries supply and demand. First, it is a structural problem of supply and demand statistics. Supply and demand statistics are not accurate because the feed, the amount of loss, and the waste rate are not surveyed. Second, the amount of fish used as a moist pellet is missing. Third, although some of the seaweed and kelp production is used as abalone feed, it is not classified as feed. Taking these results into consideration, at least 300,000 tons should be classified as feed for fisheries supply and demand statistics. As mentioned above, the current statistics on the supply and demand of fisheries are incomplete and structural improvement is needed.
