According to the agreement on WTO/TBT, we are under the situation to adopt international standard (ISO standard) as a national standard if it exists. However, in case of environmental area, it is a domestic legal obligation to use Korean environmental standard method(KESM) for analyzing various contaminants. Therefore it is necessary to assess the comparability between KEM and ISO standard prior to apply ISO standard to soil conservation law in Korea. The main purpose of this study is to assess the comparability of both methods for analyzing heavy metals in soil. We looked over various aspects like pre-treatment, calibration curve range, detection wavelength, soil organic matter content and so on. Apparently, the procedure of both methods is almost same. However in details, both methods are different in stationary time before aqua-regia extraction using reflux system, calibration curve range for Cu, Pb, Ni and measuring wavelength for Pb. According to the results of comparison test, the results were significantly different when the different calibration range was used. In case that all the extracts independent of methods were reanalyzed with the same calibration range of each method, both methods showed statistically same results. Other conditions like different stationary time, measuring wavelength of AAS and soil organic matter content did not have any influence on the analytical result. Therefore, we suggest to extend the calibration curve range to 0~8 mg/L which is used in KS I ISO standard(Korean standard related with environment which is translation version of ISO standard without any technical change). In case of $Cr^{6+}$, the results showed no significant differences between two methods even though the pretreatment, instrumentation and other analysis conditions were different. In addition to UV/Visble spectrometry of KESM for soil contamination, we suggest to adopt ion chromatography of ISO 15192(US EPA method 7199) for analyzing $Cr^{6+}$ with the consideration of laboratory work efficiency.

The purity methods to determine LOD/LOQ using standard deviation of the residual, intercept and blank by IUPAC and ACS describe many of the pitfalls and pose significant challenges to analytical chemists. Therefore, the aim of this study is the development of the simple, easy, convenient and statistically significant method to determine LOD in quantitative analysis of organic solvents by GC. The new approaching method by linearization in the given concentration range used coefficient of variation ; ${\sigma}_{n-1}$/S(standard deviation, ${\sigma}_{n-1}$ and average, S) of sensitivity(Response/concentration). The comparison of results among the purity methods(IUPAC and ACS) and the linearization have been fulfilled the F-test for standard deviations and t-test for LOD range values. The results of F-test and t-test are satisfied within 95 % confidence level, respectably. The LOD values determined by the new procedure are n-Hexane 0.0116 mg/$m^3$, Toluene 0.0807 mg/$m^3$, and o-Xylene 0.0494 mg/$m^3$. Because the standard deviation of the residual, intercept and blank and the slope of calibration curve are not calculated and the new approaching method use the coefficient of variation of sensitivity by linearization, this new method is simple, easy, convenient and statistically significant. In future, many chemical analysts will expect to applicate and routinely use this method in the all quantitative analysis.
In order to identify various Cryptosporidium species in environment, nested PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing method were used. The sensitivity of nested PCR-RFLP based on 18s rRNA gene was shown to 1 oocyst. Therefore, we applied nested PCR-RFLP method to environmental samples. As a result, only 4 samples out of 8 samples confirmed as Cryptosporidium parvum by standard method of Cryptosporidium were identified as Cryptosporidium parvum by nested PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing method. The rest of 4 samples among 8 samples were identified as Cryptosporidium muris, Cryptosporidium bailey. Therefore, in addition to standard method of Cryptosporidium, supplementary verification through nested PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing should be needed to give more accurate information about risk of Cryptosporidium.

We report mass concentration and size fraction of TPM, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ according to Korea standard test method (ES 01301.1 and ES 01317.1) and ISO 23210 methods. Particulate matters were sampled in large stationary emission sources such as a coal power plant and B-C oil refinery. The Korea standard test method PM mass concentrations showed 3~3.5 times larger than the cascade impactor method. On the other hand, the size fraction results showed less than 5% difference (i.e. $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$) between two methods. Moreover, the correlation coefficient ($r^2$) is 0.84 between TPM results of the Korea standard test method and CleanSYS. These results suggested not only improvement of current test criteria in terms of technical and theoretical aspects. Further, additional measurements are required in various large stationary sources to compare current field data.
In this study, both domestic ground and maritime environmental standard and treated method for beneficial use of dredged materials were investigated. To suggest beneficial use of dredged material, cemented bricks and light-weighted bricks were made. The strength of bricks was satisfied with the standard(50kPa), which is the strength for the reclamation work on the reclaimed land.
The main objective of this study is to assess the compatibility between Korean ministry of environment (KME) standard and ISO (KS I ISO) standard for the determination of BTEX and TPH content in soil. We carried out comparison analysis for both methods using CRM and matrix spiked samples. In case of GC-MS analysis for BTEX, we got statistically (significance level: 0.05) the same results from KME standard (ES 07600.1) and ISO standard (KS I ISO 15009). However, it showed statistically (significance level: 0.05) different results when TPH was analyzed by KME standard (ES 07552.1) and ISO standard (KS I ISO 16703). To clarify the reason why both methods produced different results for TPH content, we also did some additional experiments in terms of differences in extraction, clean-up and target hydrocarbon range. Extraction with polar and non-polar compounds mixed solvent (acetone+n-heptane) of KS I ISO 16703 showed higher extraction efficiency than with only non polar solvent (dichloromethane) extraction of ES 07552.1 by about 9%. While column type clean-up of KS I ISO 16703 showed the reduction in TPH content between before and after clean-up, batch type of clean-up of ES 07552.1 did not show any changes in TPH content through clean-up process. The target hydrocarbon range of ES 07552.1 and KS I ISO 16703 is $C_8{\sim}C_{40}$ and $C_{10}{\sim}C_{40}$, respectively. From this point of view, kerosene and JP-8 contaminated soil showed higher RPD (relative producibility deviation) values between results by both method than that of lubricant or diesel contaminated soil. The higher content of hydrocarbon ($C_8{\sim}C_{10}$) in kerosene and JP-8 played an important role in increasing RPD values in addition to the effects caused by different solvents and clean-up method. Consequently, it was concluded that both methods (ES 07552.1 and KS I ISO 16703) were not compatible.

The Ministry of Environment has measured streamflow at eight-day intervals for the estimation of standard flow of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) system. This study identified the availability of the partially measured the eight-day interval data for estimating standard flow and found the optimal extension techniques of standard flow. The study area was selected for the Nakbon-A watershed in the Nakdong River, and four streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow were considered: extension, percentile, drainagearea, and regional regression methods. The flow duration curve (FDC) using the eight-day interval streamflow data indicated very high Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values above 90 % from FDC-II to FDC-VII compared to FDC-VIII, the standard FDC. This result demonstrates that FDC using daily data of three-six cumulative years could represent standard FDC fairly well. For the streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow, the percentile method was selected as the optimal alternative, showing the minimal difference from FDC-VIII. These results validate the availability of the eight-day interval streamflow data in the standard flow estimation and the application of extension techniques. It seems that these results could reduce the uncertainty of partially measured streamflow data for water quantity and quality management.

During the last two decades, indoor air quality and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been of concern in Korean society due to their nature of potential health impacts. In order to investigate the pollution levels of VOCss in indoor environments, establishment of a solid test method for monitoring the airborne VOCss is essential. In Korea, a method based on adsorbent sampling and GC analysis coupled with thermal desorption was proclaimed as the Korea Standard Method for Indoor Air Quality Test. This study was carried out to examine some inherent problems of the VOCs measurement method. The VOCs method does not describe in detail preparing the standard samples. The standard samples may be prepared by impregnation of either liquid standard solutions or a mixture of standard gases. In this study, we investigated the optimal temperature condition for transferring the liquid standards onto a standard adsorbent tube. As a result, keeping the impregnation temperature at $250^{\circ}C$ will be recommended in regard of the boiling points of multiple target analytes and the thermal stability of the adsorbent. We also demonstrated some problems associated with handling of a syringe used for transferring the standard solutions onto the adsorbent tubes, and a best way to get rid of the syringe problems was suggested. Finally, a number of field works were conducted to evaluate the performance of adsorbent sampling methods. Comparison of different adsorbent tubes, i.e. tube packed with single sorbent (Tenax) and double sorbents (Tenax with Carbotrap), revealed that 30 to 40% differences between the two groups, implying that sampling efficiency is depending on the volatility and the strength of adsorbents. However, duplicate precisions for VOCs sampling with a same type of adsorbent and at same flow rates appeared to be satisfactory to be all within 20%, which is a quality control guideline. Distributed volume precisions were also found to be within a guideline value, 25%, although the precision was in general inferior to the duplicate precision. The Korea indoor VOCs test method should be more refined and improved in many aspects, particularly procedure and instrumentation for preparing the standard samples and specification of quality control assessment.
