This study was undertaken to clarify the more accurate detecting method of Dirofilaria immitis. Seven dogs, average 7.47 years old, confirmed with Dirofilaria immitis infection by modified Knott's method were used as the experimental animals. cDNA was constructed using oligodT(15) primer after extracting total RNA from the blood of dogs that were confirmed with Dirofilaria immitis infection. As a result of polymerase chain reaction with template using constructed cDNA, the predicted products of a 378 base-pair DNA fragment was amplified. From these results, RT-PCR was more sensitive and effective than modified Knott's method to detect Dirofilaria immitis in dogs.
A study on the diuretic action of Siegesbeckiae herba in dogs was made using a clearance technique with ethanol extract. Siegesbeckiae herba ethanol extract (SGEE) administered intravenously in doses 6.0 and 60.0mg/kg elicited diuresis and an increase in sodium and potassium excretion, and it simultaneously produced a decrease in the reabsorption rate of sodium and potassium in renal tubules. Neither renal plasma flow nor glomerular filtration rate changed significantly. SGEE, when infused directly into a renal artery in doses of 0.5 and 1.5mg/kg min, exhibited identical results to the intravenous responses confined only to the infused kidney. The above observations lead to the suggestion that SGEE elicits diuresis in dogs by decreasing the reabsorption rates of sodium and potassium in renal tubles.
The captopril matrix tablets composed of polyethylene oxide(PEO) was prepared and administered to beagle dogs. Captopril matrix tablets were prepared using direct compressed method and wet granulation compressed method with various ratios of drug to PEO. The diffusion rate of captopril matrix tablets followed on the Higuchi's diffusion model. With increasing hardness of captopril matrix tablets, release rate was decreased. Each formulation was evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC) and time course of plasma captopril concentration after oral administration to beagle dogs. The $AUC_{0-12}$ were $9.126\;{\mu}g\;h/ml$ and $6.417\;{\mu}g\;h/ml$ for the matrix tablets and conventional tablets, respectively. Therefore, the bioavailability of captopril matrix tablets was greater than that of commercial product. It is suggested that captopril matrix tablets using PEO is a useful sustained release formulation.
Portosystemic shunts in 3 Dogs with respiratory sign of cough and with dementia signs characterized by hypersensitivity, salivation, and seizure were diagnosed at veterinary teaching hospital of Seoul National University. In radiographs, microhepatica was observed. In abdominal ultrasonography, abnormal intrahepatic connections between the portal vein and the systemic vessels and tortuous vascularity were found. There was no complication such as ammonium urate urolith in kidney or urinary bladder, These dogs were treated with medicine and protein-restricted diet.
This study was performed to examine the clinical, serological, ultrasonographic and pathological findings in dogs with acute liver disease induced by tetrachlorethylene at 4 times of anthelminthic oral dose. The results obtained through this experiment could be summarized as follows: 1. The dogs administered with tetrachlorethylene, revealed decreased body weight, and showed lethargy and depression. 2. In serological findings, bilirubin values slightly increased, AST and ALT was decreased at 1∼3 days, and after that time increased according to the lapse of days, and revealed the highest at 5 days, and decreased to normal values at 6 days. 3. In ultrasonographic findings, branches of the portal vein were increased, the echodensity of the liver parenchyma was decreased at early stage, and increased at mid stage, and decreased at last stage. 4. In histopathological findings, necrosis of parenchymal cell, and perivascular hemorrhage were observed more severely at 6 days, as compared with 3 days. There results suggest that ultrasonographic examination is considered to be a more simple, rapid, non-invasive and useful diagnostic method for acute liver parenchymal lesion.

Total 283 dogs were enrolled in this study (control group: 140, patient group: 143). In the patient group, 143 dogs with underlying diseases including immune medicated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) (7), lymphoma (30), hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) (16), trauma (10), pyometra (8), bone fracture (38), peritonitis (13), meningoencephalitis (12) and mitral regurgitation (9) were enrolled in this study. Compared with healthy group, lymphoma, trauma, HAC, and IMHA group showed significantly (P < 0.01) high values of D-dimer and the highest levels in the IMHA group. Additionally, we evaluated the D-dimer level after a week of enoxaparin treatment, and the results showed D-dimer levels of post treatment group were significantly decreased compared to the pre-treatment group in lymphoma, HAC, trauma and IMHA diseases. In the high level D-dimer group, post D-dimer values after enoxaparin treatment had significantly decreased (P < 0.01) compared to levels prior to treatment.
The purpose of this study was to find anatomical variation of each small breed dog's dentition for designing more effective dental chews. Small breed dogs were volunteered for dental impressions with dental stone and alginate under tiletamine-zolazepam, tramadol, and medetomidine intravenous anesthesia. Twenty-two criteria were measured to compare dental impressions. Twenty-five dogs (9 Malteses, 8 Miniature Poodles, and 8 Shih-Tzus) were recruited. Statistically, Shih-Tzus had smaller teeth and shorter interdental spaces than those of Maltese and Miniature Poodles. Grossly, the distance between upper teeth and lower teeth was wider in Shih-Tzus. Shih-Tzu had different dental anatomy in comparative to Miniature Poodle and Maltese. It was recommended to design the dental chew considering these differences.

Three dogs were referred for emergency care after fall accidents. All cases showed hyperglycemia at initial testing, with no history of diabetes mellitus. After varying periods of time, the blood glucose levels in all cases returned to within the reference range. The present report describes three cases of typical trauma-associated hyperglycemia in dogs.
A experimental study of deep hypothermia for open heart surgery in 5 dogs was reviewed. Surface hypothermia in combination with limited cardiopulmonary bypass was employed. Circulatory dynamics were well maintained following cardiac arrest during one hour at $20^{\circ}C$. Some degree of acidosis usually developed after the arrest period but was gradually corrected during. rewarming Total circulatory occlusion could be maintained for at least one hour at $20^{\circ}C$ without evidence of cerebral damage in the dogs. Potassium in the serum after deep hypothermia was moderately decreased and it was the most severe change in the electrolyte. Free hemoglobin of serum was mild increased and it was one of advantages of combined hypothermia with limited cardiopulmonary bypass.
Neospora caninum is a coccidian parasite of animals. It is a major pathogen for cattle and dogs and it occasionally causes clinical infections in horses, goats, sheep, and deer. Domestic dogs are the only known definitive hosts for N. caninum. It is one of the most efficiently transmitted parasite of cattle and up to 90% of cattle in some herds are infected. Transplacental transmission is considered the major route of transmission of N. caninum in cattle. Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion in cattle in many countries. To elicit protective immunity against abortion in cows that already harbor a latent infection is a major problem. This paper reviews information on biology, diagnosis, epidemiology and control of neosporosis in animals.
