Differences in physiological and biochemical responses between sensitive and tolerant rice cultivars to ozone were investigated to develop reliable indications of early ozone damage. Three Korean local rice cultivars -sen-sitive cultivar Dongjin (DJ), moderately tolerant cultivar Hwayeong (HY) and tolerant cultivar Ilmee (IM) were exposed to ozone at the concentrations of 100 nl $\textrm{l}^{-1}$ or 200 nl $\textrm{l}^{-1}$ , 8 h per day for 10 days in a controlled-environment fumigation chamber. The rice cultivars seemed to be endurable to ozone stress at the concentration of 100 nl $\textrm{l}^{-1}$ which is frequently monitored during the growing season in summer. However, severe damage was induced and differential sensitivity was clearly noted among the rice cultivars at the higher ozone concentration. Activation of the glutathion (GR) -ascorbate peroxidase (APX) cycle was likely to be responsible for protection of rice plants against ozone exposure, relating difference in sensitivity of rice cultivars to ozone. Photosynthetic activity appeared to be one of sensitive responses, for which chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf greenness can together provide a very reliable index, a degree of photosynthetic damages by ozone. Formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) was also considered as an indication that can differentiate cultivars sensitivity to ozone. However, the changes in polyamines and total phenolics were not consistent with exposed ozone concentrations and/or ozone sensitivity of the cultivars. The behavior of polyamines and phenolics in the damaged plants at high ozone levels could be interpreted as an indication of ozone injury rather than activation of additional protection mechanisms scavenging active oxygen species formed by ozone. Several responses triggered by ozone could explain the differential sensitivity of the rice cultivars and be used as reliable indications of relative ozone damage to rice plant.

This study was carried out to evaluate the seeding date and performance of early maturing rye cultivars for the Dry matter yield (DMY) and nutritive value during 2016 and 2017 in Yeongseo region of Gangwondo, South Korea. The experimental field was designed as a split-plot arrangement. The treatments were two planting dates on September 25 and October 02 as the main plots, and two cultivars of forage rye including Gogu and Koolgrazer as sub-plots. The cultivars were harvested on April 26 at the heading stage of both years. In this experiment, the sowing dates and cultivars of the forage rye did not effect on DMY. The DMY had no significant differences among the cultivars of forage rye and seeding date of both years. Similarly, no significant difference was observed in the DMY of Gogu and Koolgrazer in both seeding date and years. The CP, NDF, ADF, and RFV had no significant differences among the cultivars of forage rye and seeding date of both years. Considering the DMY and nutritive value of the current experiment, seeding of forage rye cultivars Gogu and Koolgrazer on September 25 and October 2 could be used as an recommended seeding date at northern area. In addition, based on the climate characteristics of the region, both cultivars had relatively similar forage yield and quality that makes them to be recommended for cultivation in the region. This study is meaningful in that DMY was first presented in Yeongseo region where there is no cultivation data for forage rye.

The commercial cultivars of red pepper were screened against Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) and Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV) by seedling test. Tn single infection of TMV or PMMoV, mosaic symptom was produced on the cultivars of 'Cheongyang'and 'Wangshilgun'. However, in cultivars of 'Manilla'and 'Bugang', symptoms were not occurred. In single infection of PepMoV, symptoms of mottle and malformation were produced on the tested cultivars of 'Manilla', 'Bugang', 'Cheongyang'and 'Wangshilgun' In the cultivars of 'Cheongyang'and 'Wangshilgun', synergistic symptoms of stunt and lethal death were induced by mixed infections in the two combinations of TMV+PepMoV and PMMoV+PepMoV. However, in cultivars of 'Manilla'and 'Bugang', synergistic symptom was not occurred as mottle which was milder than that of single infection. Cells were single infected with TMV and PMMoV the cultivars of 'Cheongyang'and 'Wangshilgun', respectively, had typical ultrastructures of tobamovirus as the stacked-band structure and multiple spiral aggregate (SA). Ultrastructures of cell and tissues infected with PepMoV on the cultivars of 'Cheongyang', 'Wangshilgun', 'Manilla'and 'Bugang', the potyvirus inclusions of pinwhills, scrolls, lamminated aggregates and amorphous inclusion were observed. Infected cells with a combination of TMV+PepMoV and PMMoV+PepMoV, the virus particles and inclusions of the two different viruses were found only mixed infection in the same cytoplasm and the amounts of viruses in mixed infections were abundant than in single infection. The angled-layer aggregates (ALA) was observed in the cells infected mixedly with TMV and PepMoV
This study was carried out to identify Korean ginseng cultivars using peptide nucleic acid (PNA) microarray. Sixty-seven probes were designed based on nucleotide variation to distinguish Korean ginseng cultivars of Panax ginseng. Among those PNA probes, three (PGB74, PGB110 and PGB130) have been developed to distinguish five Korean ginseng cultivars. Five Korean ginseng cultivars were denoted as barcode numbers depending on their fluorescent signal patterns of each cultivar using three probe sets in the PNA microarray. Five Korean ginseng cultivars, Chunpoong, Yunpoong, Gopoong, Gumpoong and Sunpoong, were simply denoted as '111', '222', '211', '221' and '122', respectively. This is the first report of PNA microarray which provided an objective and reliable method for the authentication of Korean ginseng cultivars. Also, the PNA microarray will be useful for management system and pure guarantee in ginseng seed.

This report describes a set of seven informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one insertion-deletion (INDEL) distributed over 24 cultivars that can be used for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cultivar identification. We analyzed 163,000 genomic DNA sequences downloaded from Tobacco Genome Initiative database and assembled 31,370 contigs and 60,000 singletons. Using relatively long contigs, we designed primer sets for PCR amplification. We amplified 61 loci from 24 cultivars and sequenced the PCR products. We found seven significant SNPs and one INDEL among the sequences and we classified the 24 cultivars into 10 groups. SNP frequency of tobacco, 1/8,380 bp, was very low in comparison with those of other plant species, between 1/46 bp and 1/336 bp. For exact identification of tobacco cultivars, many more SNP markers should be developed. This study is the first attempt to identify tobacco cultivars using SNP markers.

Recently, the rice growing time was extended by the global warming. This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of rice double cropping system in southern Korea. The first transplanting was with six cultivars ('Kilala397', 'Baekilmi', 'Joun', 'Hanseol' and 'Jungmo1031') on April 15. All cultivars could be harvested at the end of July. Adaptable cultivars for the first cultivation were 'Kilala397', Baekilmi' and 'Joun'. The rice yields at the first cultivation was about 95% of local average yield. Although the yield was slightly less, the first cultivation was considered to have economic benefits, because of the high market price of rice. In the second transplanting was with five cultivars ('Manjong', 'Joun', 'Deabo', 'Jinok' and 'Kilala397') on April 15. All cultivars could be harvested in early November. Adaptable cultivars for the second cultivation were 'Jinok' and 'Kilala397'. The rice yields at the second cultivation was about below the 60% of local average yield, because there was the less growth than normal season cultivation. Consequently, southern Korea' annual rice double cropping system is considered to have no economic value yet. However, the research should be continued considering the temperature rise of global warming.

During the summer of 2005, specimens of soybean cultivars (Daepung, Daewon, Hwanggeum and Taegwang) showing frogeye leaf spot (FLS) were obtained from various areas in Korea. Eight isolates identified as Cercospora sojina were inoculated on the adaxial leaf surfaces of 63 Korean soybean cultivars; the disease responses to each isolate were evaluated 14 days and 21 days after inoculation. Based on the disease responses (resistant or susceptible) of the cultivars by the isolates, a set of cultivars (Anpeong, Bogwang, Cheongdu No. 1, Cheongja No. 3, Dachae, Daemang, Jangwon, Namhae, Sowon, Taegwang) were selected and inoculated with seven isolates for further testing pathogenic variance. Interestingly, 6 out of 7 tested C. sojina isolates revealed differential ability in infecting different soybean cultivars. This result may indicate the possibility of new race occurrence or pathogenic variation; this also presents evidence for prevalent FLS occurrence during humid and hot weather in Korea.
The principal objective of this study was to develop a discrimination method using SSR markers in Korean ginseng cultivars. Five cultivars--Chunpoong, Yunpoong, Gopoong, Sunpoong, and Kumpoong--were evaluated by nine markers out of 22 SSR markers. A total of 23 alleles were detected, ranging from 1 to 4, with an average of 2.6 alleles per locus, and an averages of gene diversity (GD) of 0.480. Nine markers were tested in order to distinguish among five Korean ginseng cultivars. Two markers out of nine SSR markers, GB-PG-065 and GB-PG-142, were selected as key markers for discrimination among Korean ginseng cultivars. Two genotypes were detected in GB-PG-065. Chunpoong and Kumpoong shared the same allele type, and Yunpoong, Gopoong, and Sunpoong shared another identical allele type. In the case of GB-PG-142, a specific allele type differentiated from those of other four cultivars was observed only in Sunpoong cultivar. Consequently, the SSR markers developed in this study may prove useful for the identification of Korean ginseng cultivars and the development of ginseng seed management systems, as well as tests to guarantee the purity of ginseng seeds.
The epidemics of rice blast which occurred in south parts of Korea during the period from 1999 to 2001 and damaged several high quality rice cultivars developed using "Milyang 95" and/or "Milyang 96" as a parent. Genetic diversity of 23 rice cultivars including "Milyang 95" and it's relatives was assessed using 54 simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers reported to be linked to major blast resistance genes. Fifty-four SSR markers representing fifty-seven loci in the rice genome detected polymorphism among the 23 cultivars and revealed a total of 170 alleles with an average of 3.0 alleles per primer, The number of amplified bands ranged from 1 to 7. Several SSR markers including RM249, RM206 and OSR20 were informative for assessing the genetic diversity of relatively closed japonica rice cultivars. The 23 cultivars were classified into four groups by cluster analysis based on Nei's genetic distances, and the cultivars developed from same parents showed a tendency to cluster together that is consistant with genealogical information. High quality rice cultivars, Daesanbyeo, Donganbyeo, and Milyang 95 belonged to the same cluster, At the loci, RM254 and OSR32, all of the cultivars derived from the crosses using "Milyang 95" shared same alleles, suggesting that these japonica cultivars might carry alleles that are identical by descent. Evaluation of 23 rice cultivars against blast needs to be confirmed regarding the relationship between genotype and blast resistance.p between genotype and blast resistance.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of different sowing dates and cultivars on the forage yield and quality of winter rye (Secale cereale L.). The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of two sowing dates such as early (15 September) and late (30 September). The subplots consisted of rye cultivars of five different maturity groups such as 'Kodiak' (Late), 'Koolgrazer' (Early), 'Danko' (Late), 'Homil22' (Medium) and 'Olhomi1' (Early). Dry matter (DM) content at early sowing (19.7%) was higher than those at late sowing (17.8%), while crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) contents at early sowing (16.6% and 61.6%) were lower than those at late sowing (16.8% and 63.1%). Although DM content of early maturing cultivars (Koolgrazer and Olhomi1) was higher than the other cultivars, CP and TDN contents of those were lower compared to other cultivars. The contents of fiber components (ADF, NDF and cellulose) at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, while ADL and hemicellulose at early sowing were lower than those at late sowing. ADF and cellulose of early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars, while ADL and hemicellulose of Danko were higher than that of the other cultivars. DM, CP, In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and TDN yields at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, and early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars. Results of this study indicate that forage production technology in combination with early sowing and use of early maturing rye cultivar could enhance both production and quality of rye.
