  • General characteristics and life span of silkworm moth were investigated amongst 277 gene resources preserved and maintained in Korea. Silkworm varieties were classified according to the commercial characteristics and the viability of tested varieties. There were significant differences among the eight different commercial characteristics of silkworm such as whole larval period, duration of 5th instar, pupal body weight, single cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, cocoon yield and longevity, Tropical race showed the longest life span among the other five geographical races, and followed by Japanese, European, Chinese and Korean race in order. In the longevity of each variety, Daizo(sdi) showed the shortest life span with 4.3days, and J037 was the longest as 16.0 days. Average longevity of female was 11.1 days as showed 3.0 days longer than that of male which was 8.2 days. Total average longevity of the whole varieties was 9.7days. In the correlation between the longevity and commercial characteristics, there was a tendency that the commercial characteristics became better when the life span was longer. According to the result of Complete Linkage Cluster Analysis, the genetic resources of 277 silkworm varieties classified into 5 groups such as “Group I”for short life span with low cocoon yielding “Group II”for middle life span with middle cocoon yielding,“Group III”for the shortest life span with low cocoon yielding, “Group IV”for high pupation rate and the highest cocoon yielding with comparatively long life span, and “Group V”for the longest life span with comparatively high cocoon yielding.

  • 1. In order to investigate the epidemic outbreak of rice blast disease on the resistant variety Kwankon in 1969, this investigation was undertaken as a basis for breeding resistant varieties. 2. The 16 isolates collected from Kyunggi area were inoculated at the 3-4 leaf stage on 12 Japanese differential varieties used for identifying races under greenhouse conditions. Out of 16 isolates 15 were identified as C race group and one as N race group. Of the 15 rates, nine were C-8, two were C-7 and two were C-1. Of the remaining two isolates, one was similar to C-1, and the other was similar to C-5. 3. It is concluded that the epidemic in the resistant variety 'Kwanok' was due to the occurrence of the C race group, which can infect the Chinese type varieties.

  • Four varieties of the Korean sweet potato, Yeonmi, Jeungmi, Shincheonmi, and Shinyeulmi, were chosen to prepare the distilled koguma-soju (sweet potato-soju). The relationship between the flavor of the koguma-soju and the content of monoterpene alcohols (MTAs) was studied. The MTAs investigated here were linalool, nerol, geraniol, citronellol, and ${\alpha}$-terpineol. The ranges of MTA concentrations in the koguma-soju made from the four sweet potato varieties were $14.0-16.6{\mu}g/L$ for nerol, $24.8-34.7{\mu}g/L$ for linalool, $32.8-38.5{\mu}g/L$ for geraniol, $37.8-54.2{\mu}g/L$ for citronellol, and $76.6-94.7{\mu}g/L$ for ${\alpha}$-terpineol. Geraniol, nerol, and linalool were found in lower concentrations, while ${\alpha}$-terpineol was present in a higher concentration compared to their average content in the imo-shochu, a distilled Japanese sweet potato-soju. The concentrations of citronellol in the koguma-soju and imo-shochu were similar. The flavor evaluation tests revealed that the koguma-soju produced from the Yeonmi variety had a leafy vegetable or a grass-like, sharp flavor, whereas the Jeungmi-soju was characterized by a fruity or a sulfur-like sharp taste. Floral, vanilla-like, and mild flavors were predominant in the Shincheonmi-soju, while the Shinyeulmi-soju had either a fruity, citrus-like flavor or a rubber-like, rough taste. This study demonstrates that koguma-soju made from different sweet potato varieties have unique characteristic flavors.

  • Experiments were carried out to clarify the relationships between seed yields and some ecological characteristics, seed yields and some morphological characteristics, and the relationships among the varietal yields on the several sowing plots when grown under different climatic conditions. Twenty-four soybean varieties were used as the material, selected at random from 138 varieties which were cultivated the year before. These varieties were grown in the Experimental Farm, Chinju Agricultural College, Kyung Sang Namdo, Korea, and seed sowing was conducted at 5 times, from April to July, in 1962 and 1963. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Correlations between seed yields and some ecological characteristics on the sowing date bases are shown in Table 1. Among some ecological characteristics, it was observed that there wert close relationships between seed yields and days to flowering, and between seed yields and the total growing length, except on the late sowing, i.e. July sowing plots, However, there was no clear correlation between seed yields and durations of flowering, and between seed yields and days from flowering to maturity. 2. Correlations between seed yields and some morphological characteristics on the sowing date bases are shown in Table 2. From this table, it was also observed that there were some close relationships between seed yields and branch number for plant, stem diameter, plant weight, pod number per plant, and grain number per plant, but there was no clear relationship between seed yields and stem length, and between seed yields and 100 grain weight, on every sowing plot. 3. Relations between varietal yields and the sowing dates are shown in Table 3. Our leading varieties such as Ulsan, Sangdoo, Changdan Backmok, Iksan, Haman, Barchongdeo, and Anion Daerip, which belong to the maturity groups of IV, V, and VI, have been significantly high in yield at each sowing date plot, but the extreme early varieties, that frequently are damaged by insects, moisture and diseases, and the extreme late varieties, that frequently are caught by frost suffering reduced yield, are showed a lower yield than the others. However, extreme early varieties, for instance, Black Hawk, an American variety, and Chung Buk Baek, a Korean early variety, showed high productivity on the late sowing, June and July sowing plots, and Do san No. 6, which is late Japanese variety, showed a high yield on the extreme early sowing, i.e. April sowing plots. 4. Relations between seed yields and the sowing dates on the varietal bases are shown in Table 4. It was observed that, the early varieties did not differ much in yields at the various sowing dates while the yields of late varieties decreased progressively with subsequent dates. However, the extreme late varieties, such as Tamanishiki, that frequently are caught by frost suffering reduced yield, may be difficult to harvest at this location. The results in these experiments showed that in most cases maximum yields were obtained when leading varieties, which are medium or late varieties, were shown in Mid-May, and progressively lower yields were produced from June and July sowings. On the other hand, the late sowings of the early varieties, such as Black Hawk and Chung Buk Baek, in these experiments showed favorable yields compared with the others. From these results, we can predict that our local medium or late varieties produce higher yields at this location than was produced by early varieties in most of the sowing dates, especially the May sowing, and early varieties such as Black Hawk and Chung Buk Baek should be used in the late sowing, June sowing time.

  • The strain differences in larval walking behavior of 39 silkworm varieties, Bombyy mori, have been investigated. larval walking distance in silkworm varieties were remakably different. The walking distance was the longest in the matured larvae following the newly hatched larvae and in the other larval stage the distance was very short. The means of the walking distance in larval stages were as follows ; newly hatched larvae was 2.58cm, 3rd instar 0.72cm, 5th instar 1.18cm and matured larvae 2.94cm. The length of relative walking distances in each variety was not always in proportion to each larval stage. Therefore, the controlling factor of walking behavior was assumed to be different by the each larval stage. In the newly hatched larvae, 3rd instar and 5th instar larvae, the distribution range of walking distance was very broad in European races, narrow in Chinese races and medium in Japanese races. There was not much differences in the walking distance of mature larvae among European, Chinese and Japanese races.

  • This experiment was carried out to select the desirable welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) varieties for the year-round cultivation in water culture. Ten varieties were tested, of which five were Korean's and the other five were Japanese's. The germination percentage and germinative energy of most varieties we.e more than 90 percent. The fastest germination speed were 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Gujopa' and 'Fuyune'. The best growth of the varieties were 'Geumjanguedaepa' and 'Tokyokuro' in spring, 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Gujopa', 'Saesaeksisilpa' and 'Tokyokuro' in summer, 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Gujopa' and 'Tokyokuro' in fall, and 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Midorigawa' and 'Tokyokuro' in winter cultivation. Suitable varieties of growth fur all seasons were 'Geurnjanguedaepa' and 'Tokyokuro', though 'Gujopa' was good in summer and fall. In the view of nutritional content, nitrate content was significantly lower in 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Tokyokuro' and 'Fuyune' than that in'Saesaeksisilpa' and 'Starziam'. Vitamin C content was higher in 'Aqua Green', 'Midorigawa' and 'Seoulbaekpa' than that of the others. Pyruvic acid content was the highest in 'Geumjanguedaepa' and 'Suckchanguedaepa'. Based on the above results, 'Geumjanguedaepa', 'Gujopa' and 'Tokyokuro' were selected as the most desirable young welsh onion varieties for the year-round water culture.

  • With the 91 lines of Italian millet collected throughout the whole country in Korea and the 238 varieties from several Asian countries, trial was carried out to elucidate its differentiation, dissemination and distribution, and the ethnobotanical relations to the adjacent area. Glutinous millets which consisted of 66% among the collected Korean lines were widely distributed throughout the whole country, but non-glutinous ones were mainly distributed in the mountainous regions and Jeju island. The variations in germinability at low temperature were recognized among lines, but seemed not to be closely related to their regional distribution. The collected lines with small grain size were distributed mainly in the mountainous regions of middle and northern part of Korea and larger ones in Jeonnam province and Jeju island. And some of them were larger in grain size as compared with that of Japanese and Republic of China varieties. Seed coat color of collected lines in Korea showed wide variations from yellow to gray, especially in Gyungbuk province. However, all lines from Chungnam, Jeonnam and Gyungnam province were yellow in seed coat color. All lines from Korean collection except two lines indicated negative(-) phenol reaction which is very similar to that of Japan and China, while these were quite different from the varieties of Republic of China, Philippines and India, of which 30-60% showed positive(+) phenol reaction. The pattern of the esterase isozyme m Korean lines was simillar to that of Japanese lines and this was quite different from that of Republic of China, Philippines and India. Variation of this trait was greater in Chinese and Korean lines.
