Fire Performance of the Wood Treated with Inorganic Fire Retardants

  • To prepare the eco-friendly fire retardant wood, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were treated with inorganic chemicals, such as sodium silicate, boric acid, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. Different combination and concentration of those chemicals were impregnated by vacuum/pressure treatment methods. The electron-beam treatment was used to increase the chemical penetration into the wood. The fire performance of the fire retardant treated wood was investigated. The penetration of chemicals into the wood was enhanced after electron beam treatment. Ignition time of the treated wood was the most effectively retarded by sodium silicate, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. The most effective chemical combination was found at 50% sodium silicate and 3% ammonium borate, which satisfied flammability criteria for a fire retardant material in the KS F ISO 5660-1 standards.

  • According to an increase in demand for polyurethane soft foam for thermally insulated containers, the purpose of this study is based on redefining existing rigid polyurethane foam insulation KS standard which has been limited to building material-based authentication techniques. Since there are arising concerns of consumer rights and safety due to humidifier fungicides and urethane track incidents, there are elements to be further researched on rigid polyurethane foam insulation for refregerated containers. Thus, we reviewed the prior standards for rigid polyurethane foam insulation and verified the validity of certification testing method for the new standard with self-foamed polyurethane.

  • In order to analyze the difference of lenses production, we measured the refractive power and the thickness of their optical centers using ophthalmic lenses which were distributed at home country and abroad. The home products were manufactured to be next to foreign goods, but there were several cases to exceed acceptable limits and we need to reduce the deviation from measuring values in the same lenses. To get a beat on advanced countries, rearing technical expert, hard quality test and process control and standardization of lenses are essential to home lens industrials.

Determination of Earthquake Loads and Finite Element Analysis of Circular Water Reservoirs with a Large Size over 5,000 ton (5,000톤 이상 대용량 원형 배수지 구조의 지진력 산정 및 유한요소 해석)

  • Finite element analyses were performed on large-sized (>5000 ton) stainless steel circular water reservoirs subjected to earthquake loading for different stainless steel materials. The earthquake load inputs for the analyses were selected by the guidelines in the Korean Standards Association specification KS B 6283. Seismic effects can be heavily dependent on water capacity, especially for large reservoirs. The numerical results show the interactions between the different load combinations and other parameters such as the water capacity and stainless steel materials. Structural performance is also evaluated for the various load combinations.

Quality Comparison of Commercial Boiled-dried Anchovies by Different Catch Methods

  • This study was conducted to compare the quality among commercial boiled-dried anchovies caught by different methods. Regardless of catch methods, the moisture, salinity and acid-insoluble ash contents of commercial boiled-dried anchovies ranged from $23.2-25.2\%,\;6.8-7.4\%$. and $0.32-0.46\%$, respectively. By sensory evaluation, these anchovies were less than $5\%$ in break-age, whitish or yellowish in color and had a foul smell. Judging from the above results and Korean Standards (KS) for foods, these anchovies were classified into special grade. There was no difference in total amino acid content. While, in a major mineral content, boiled-dried anchovy caught by set net (BA-SN) was the highest, and those caught by lift net (BA-LN) and tow net (BA-TN) followed in order. The lipid oxidation progressed at the slowest rate in the BA-SN, and then no difference in the lipid oxidation was found between the BA-LN and BA-TN. Judging from the results of chemical analysis and sensory evaluation, the BA-TN was the worst quality among the commercial boiled-dried anchovies. No difference in quality was found between the BA-LN and the BA-SN.

  • For the purpose of providing basic data for the development of size specifications for middle-aged women in Busan, one dimensional measurements were made with the subjects. ranging 45 to 59 in age. The following are the conclusions : 1) According to ages, the middle and elder groups of the middle-aged women shared similar body types, having shorter height, more lowered bust. and increased upper-body depth and girth factors, compared with the earlier middle-aged women group. But the thigh girth of the elder middle-aged group (age: 55∼59) was the lowest, maybe owing to the aged lower-body muscles. 2) In the comparison with national averages. armhole girth, elbow girth, wrist girth. back waist length, side neck point-B.P.-waist line, and sleeve length showed great differences. This is problematic in that the national size standards fail to reflect each legion\`s peculiar body type characteristics. 3) Even though body types were classified according to drop value criteria suggested by KS specifications, 23.05% did not belong to the criteria. They were thus classified as A, N, and H body types, following the distribution of the present experiment. 4) In consideration of the economy factor of the production and sales of the clothes industry, the combinations of height and chest garth for the middle-aged Busan women were as follows: 155cm-85cm (Body Type A) 150cm-88cm (Body Type N), and 155cm-94cm (Body Type H).

  • This paper presents experimental evaluation of IRE (isolation roller bearing) seismic isolation device. From the combination of base isolation on the IRE system displacement response spectrum and acceleration response spectrum, the compressive strength and the coefficient of friction experiments. Also the IRE system is evaluated by environment test according to KS standards. Both the resonance and seismic experiments using a combination of the IRE and Natural Rubber Bearing (NRB) are performed in order to analyze the seismic isolation of the IRE system dynamic characteristics. For the given load and exciting frequency, the resonant frequency becomes lower, but the resonant magnification remains to be same. However, it is shown that when we consider the IRE only, the vibration on the table with the horizontal movement and the independent horizontal displacement due to the rolling motion of the plate and roller are significantly reduced. This result verifies that the proposed optimal design method of the IRE system is very effective.

  • This study is intended for how to utilize the recycled fine aggregate which is produced by concrete wastes. It analyzes the quality of the fine aggregate which is reproduced through the acid treatment process, and comprehends the characteristics of mortar using the recycled fine aggregate to review whether it can be put to practical use for concrete. The conclusion of the study are as follows 1. The recycled fine aggregate through the acid treat shows the low rate of absorption and high density. 2. Compared to the mortar made from acid liquid precipitated recycled fine aggregate, using nature water precipitated one reduces the flow. 3. The compressive strength of mortar using recycled fine aggregate tends to be reduced according to the kind of precipitated water. Based on the above results, the recycled fine aggregate through the acid treatment process satisfies the quality standards of the first-grade recycled fine aggregate of KS F 2573 (recycled fine aggregate for concrete) but it is concluded that the recycled fine aggregate through the acid treatment process can not used as fine aggregate used concrete because it has destructive characteristics when the mortar is produced

  • Recently, a demand for precision 5-axis machine tools is significantly increasing, and the maintenance of machine tool accuracy becomes more important. it is very difficult to evaluate to accuracy of 5-axis M/C in the production site since it needs expensive measuring equipment and skilled engineer. On the other hand, evaluation items of 5-axis M/C are not systematically organized in the existing KS and ISO standards. In this study, the evaluation items for 5-axis M/C were derived systematically and a test workpiece was developed to evaluate the machine tool accuracy more easily. The error sources of machine tool can be estimated by machining and measuring of the test workpiece. The correlation between the machine tool accuracy and the accuracy of machined test workpiece was analyzed. As a result, the accuracy of machined test workpiece represented the accuracy of machine tool and the error sources very effectively.

  • KS standards mostly relate to single component material evaluation, so in cases of underground structure environments, most cannot predict the existing composite forms of deterioration, resulting in the applied waterproofing materials becoming unable to respond to these damaging factors. Current domestic waterproofing market in Korea mainly uses single-ply waterproofing materials comprised of coatings or waterproof sheets and two or more-ply composite waterproofing methods. In order to evaluate these types of composite waterproofing systems, a new test equipment and method that incorporates various deterioration conditions (joint displacement, chemical exposure, water pressure etc) was developed. In a comparison testing, the results showed that flexible type materials have higher response performance towards joint displacement than the hardened material.
