An empirical study was conducted on fashion cultural products, targeting foreigners from diverse cultures. Its purpose was to identify foreigners' attitudes toward fashion cultural products of which design sources were derived from the Korean culture. The quantitative research using questionnaires was targeted at Americans, Chinese and Japanese who visited Korea. The questionnaires were back-translated into different languages for completion by the test subjects. Out of a total of 424 surveys returned, 393 were deemed usable. As a result of data analyses using SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 5.0, we found that: First, two attitude factors, the authenticity and aesthetic elements, exerted a significant effect on the intent to purchase. However, the last attitude factor, care and carriage convenience, did not significantly influence the purchase intention. Second, there was no significant difference in the attributes regarded as important when purchasing fashion cultural product between people from the U.S. and Japan. However, people from China showed differences in the attributes compared to the U.S. and Japan. Third, we found that attitudes toward fashion cultural products were different among respondents of three countries. It was revealed that the Chinese liked Korea's fashion cultural products the most, followed by Americans and Japanese. This research is significant because investigating foreigners' attitudes toward fashion cultural products for reaching out to a broader market abroad would contribute to help building an market entry planning.
To develope a sauce using Gochujang which can give foreigners good overall acceptance such as good flavor, taste, color, viscosity and versatility to many foods, we studied on the rheological properties and color control, recipes with spices, herbs, syrup, salt and flavor ingredients and sensory evaluation by Chinese, American and Japanese including Korean. From the survey, the Americans suggested that the proper fellow food of Gochujang sauce be fried chicken, barbecue, hamburger and pina, and hoped to reflect red color, low viscosity, hot taste, low sweetness, salty and sourness and diet effect. The Chinese suggest pork and fried food as a fellow with Gochujang sauce and showed similar opinion in the sensory attributes like the Americans except sweetness. When 5% of starch and xanthan gum was added to sauce, respectively, the yield stress of Gochujang sauce showed 33.21 Pa similar to tomato ketchup. In fluidity measured by voistic flow meter, Gochujang sauce showed 6.2 cm/30sec more or less faster than tomato ketchup which showed 4.7 cm/30sec. Gochujang sauce tended to show strong red color and lightness as pH decreased. The pH adjustant and Paprica oleoresin(2%) improved a value to 12.11 and L value to 24.24 similar to tomato kechup(a:12.42, L:25.48). The 1st gochujang sauce product show 4.50 to 5.75 pots in the overall acceptance in the consumer test including foreigners and koreans. However, the 2nd Gochujang sauce product showed 5.90 points and 6.30 points in the pina and fried chicken, respectively, in the same consumer test. Therefore, we propose that Gochujang can be used for developing sauce products which is most acceptable for various foreigners.
본 연구는 특정 집단의 기억이 공간적 스케일을 넘어 확산되는 과정에 주목하며 이의 원인과 지리적 함의를 찾고자 한다. 위안부의 역사는 한반도를 넘어 미국의 한인사회를 중심으로 회자되기 시작하여 2010년 뉴저지 주 팰리세이즈파크 공립 도서관 마당에 미국 최초의 위안부 기림비가 건립되는 결실로 이어졌다. 위안부 할머니들이 겪었던 전쟁 범죄의 피해 경험이 제한된 스케일을 넘어 미국으로 확산되는 과정은 다양한 주체들에 의한 다층적 과정 및 정치적 목적이 내포되었음을 이해해야 한다. 본 연구는 위안부 기억의 초국적 확산 과정에 있어 미국 내 한인 이민자 집단의 역할에 대해 조명하며 그들의 미국 내 정치적 입지 확대 및 타 민족과의 정서적 연대에 있어 기억의 이식이 어떻게 개입되었는지를 분석하였다.
It is necessary to understand the relationship between socio-cultural elements and smoking, alcohol, and marijuana use behaviors in order to plan public health policy or health promotion program of Mexican Americans. Demographic, socioeconomic status, and acculturation are variables which reflect mechanisms socialization influences these behavior patterns among this population. Thus, this study investigates the prevalence of addictive behaviors and individual differences on addictive behaviors related to variables of acculturation, age, gender, education, and income. And the interrelations among addictive behaviors are also examined. The analyses used data for Mexican Americans from the U.S. Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from July 1982 through December 1984 by the National Center for Health Statistics. ANOVA and correlation coefficients were used for this study. This study found that there are gender differences among addictive behaviors in their prevalence. Both males' and females' alcohol and marijuana use behaviors are positively related to the acculturation. Females' smoking behavior is positively related to acculturation while males' smoking is negatively related to it. Income and education are negatively related to males' smoking and positively related to males' alcohol behavior. However, males' marijuana behavior is not related to income. Females' smoking behaviors is not significantly related income and education. Education and income are positively related to marijuana behavior among females. Age is related to all three addictive behaviors among both gender. Age is negatively related to both males' and females' marijuana use behavior. Interrelation between smoking and marijuana use behavior is not significant among males. However, interrelations between alcohol and marijuana use behavior and between alcohol and smoking are significant among both genders. Females' smoking and marijuana use behavior is also significantly related.
This study describes the difference of lighting directing techniques of between asian and westerner in the residential space, and presents the LED lighting environment according to the residents' behaviors. This study was conducted with Koreans, European and North Americans, and the space range was limited to the living room where the various activities occur. The data of the desired LED lighting environment is drawn through lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation of LED in living room, and the detailed study results are as follows ; First, the lighting in living space should be made with considering the various behaviors because the expected level according to consideration or not of behavior makes much difference. Second, the comfortably feeling LED lighting environments that are lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation, are different between Koreans and North Americans, but Koreans and European feel comfortable under the similar LED lighting environments. Third, the data for the comfortable LED lighting environments is established according to the various residents' behaviors, which are watching TV, reading, studying, relaxing, chatting, entertaining guests. And then, the established LED lighting environments are analyzed with characteristic of behavior and classified according to lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation for understanding their characteristic Few studies have been conducted to find out difference of the comfortably feeling LED lighting environment between asians and westerners. Therefore, in this study, it has a great significance to present the difference of the LED lighting environments that asians and westerners feel comfortable in living space, and to draw the characteristic of the expected lighting environment according to residents' behaviors.
More accurate evaluation of iodine consumption of Koreans can be made by measuring the urinary iodine excretion of people living in representative areas. The data about average iodine excretions by region, sex and age were gathered in order to suggest as a factor the criteria on the progress or prognosis of thyroid disease patients. This study was conducted on 3,000 subjects (2,000 Younggwang-gun residents and 1,000 Muan-gun residents) between July 2004 and August 2005. The data sampling was done based on stratified random sampling and the data were analyzed according to age (the subjects were divided into age groups, five years each) and sex of the subjects. Of the 3,000 subjects, a total of 1,592 people (1,174 in Younggwang-gun and 418 in Muan-gun) participated in this study, which used ISE (iodine ion selective electrode) to measure the concentration of iodine in urine. The 1,592 subjects are composed of 732 males and 860 females. The average urinary iodine excretion was $3.10{\pm}1.75mg/L$ (0.31~15.2 mg/L). The average iodine excretion of males was $3.09{\pm}1.61mg/L$ (0.42~15.2 mg/L) while it was $3.11{\pm}1.86mg/L$ (0.31~12.5 mg/L) among females, which represents no significant difference between males and females. However, the values were significantly higher than those of Europeans and Americans. There were statistically significant differences among the regions. When the data were analyzed according to age, females in their 40s were found to have a little less urinary iodine excretion and males had less and less iodine excretion as they get older. These results are deemed to have a statistically significant difference. This study was conducted on a large number of people (N=1,592) for the first time in Korea. If the data collected through this study can be regarded as the average urinary iodine excretion of Koreans, it is possible to conclude that the average iodine consumptions of Koreans are a lot more than Europeans and Americans. Thus, the effect of much iodine consumption should be studied further.
The Attention Restoration Theory (ART) developed by Kaplan and Kaplan proposes that effortful directed attention required in normal life can be fatigued. Restoration can occur in a setting that has restorative qualities. The restorative quality described by the ART involves four concepts: being away, fascination extent, and compatibility. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the restorative quality of landscape influenced the preferences and satisfaction of visitors to an heritage landscape. Four kinds of heritage landscapes of Kyongju were used as environmental surrogates and 150 americans participated in the study. Hartig et al.'s Revised Perceived Restorativeness Scale (RPRS) was used as the psychological measure for the restorative quality, along with other measurement constructs such as cultural uniqueness and novelty. The results showed that RPRS was a reliable measurement tool for assessing the restorative quality of artificial landscapes. Factor analysis identified three valid factors: escape-fascination compatibility, anti-extent. Among the three factors, only two, escape-fascination and compatibility, were found to have important effects on visiting preference and satisfaction. Specifically, higher levels of preference and satisfaction were associated with higher levels of escape-fascination and compatibility. The results indicate that the restorative quality has a high possibility to be used as a frame of reference for assessing various types of landscapes, from natural to artificial. It was also proposed that restorative quality could better explain the experience of the landscape strongly related to specific purpose or motivation.
Although noodles occupy an important place in the dietary lives of Americans, up until the present time research and in-depth data on the noodle consumption patterns of the US population have been very limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the food consumption and diet patterns of noodle consumers and non-consumers according to age, gender, income, and ethnicity. The 2001-2002 NHANES databases were used. The NHANES 2001-2002 data showed that noodle consumers reporting noodle consumption in their 24-h recall were 2,035 individuals (23.3% of total subjects). According to the results, the mean noodle consumption was 304.1 g/day/person, with 334.3 g for males and 268.0 g for females. By age, the intake of those in the age range of 9-18 years old ranked highest at 353.0 g, followed by the order of 19-50 year-olds with 333.5 g, 51-70 year-olds with by 280.4 g, older than 71years old with 252.3 g, and 1-8 year-olds with 221.5 g. By gender, males consumed more noodles than females. Also, according to income, the intake amount for the middle-income level (PIR 1~1.85) of consumers was highest at 312.5 g. Noodle intake also showed different patterns by ethnicity in which the "other" ethnic group consumed the most noodles with 366.1 g, followed by, in order, Hispanics with 318.7 g, Whites with 298.6 g, and Blacks with 289.5 g. After comparing food consumption by dividing the subjects into noodle consumers and non-consumers, the former was more likely to consume milk, fish, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and alcoholic beverages while the latter preferred meat, poultry, bread, and non-alcohol beverages.
Purpose: Will more expensive gifts be more pleasurable and appreciated? This is a general expectation of gift-givers. According to the previous study on Americans (Flynn and Adams 2009), recipients tend to appreciate gifts regardless of their price. It indicates that there is an interaction effect between position (giving / receiving) and gift price. This study expands the previous study and aims to answer the following two questions: "Are such an interaction effect observed in Korean, too?" and "What types of people prefer expensive gifts?" Research design, data, and methodology: Study 1 of the current research repeated the Study 3 of Flynn and Adams (2009), with an iPod (high-priced gift condition) and a music CD (low-priced gift condition). That is, a 2 (gift price: high / low) x 2 (position: giver / receiver) between-group design was used. Study 2 used gift certificates of 100,000 won (high-priced gift condition) and 5,000-won gift (low-priced gift condition). Unlike the previous study that measured only one dependent variable (gratitude), this study added five more dependent variables in an attempt to exclude alternative explanations, such as endowment effects or emotional conflicts. This study also measured individualism / collectivism, face sensitivity, and materialism to explore the types of people who prefer expensive gifts. Results: The interaction effect between gift price and position on the level of appreciation was not significant. Meanwhile the main effect of gift price and of position were significant. The gift-recipient was more appreciative than the gift-givers' expectation regardless of the price of gifts. To investigate individual differences, individualism/collectivism, face sensitivity, and materialism were examined, but none of these variables were significantly related to the preference for expensive gifts. Respondents who received gift certificates in Study 2 were less grateful than those who received iPods or music CDs in Study 1. Conclusions: This study found that Koreans tend to be more grateful if they receive expensive gifts, in contrast to the Flynn and Adams (2009)'s study with Americans. In addition, gift-recipients appreciated more than givers' expectation and were more grateful when they received tangible products rather than gift certificates.
Background: There is no normative craniofacial anthropometric data for the Kenyan-African population. The purpose of this investigation was to determine normative anthropometric craniofacial measurements and proportional relationships for Kenyans of African descent and to compare the data with African Americans (AA), North American Whites (NAW), and neoclassical canons. Methods: Twenty-five direct facial anthropometric measurements, and 4 angular measurements, were taken on 72 Kenyan-African participants (age range 18-30 years) recruited at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. The data were compared with AA and NAW populations, and neoclassical canons. Descriptive statistics of the variables were computed for the study population. Results: Significant differences between both Kenyan males and females were detected in forehead height (~ 5 mm greater for males, ~ 4.5 mm for females), nasal height (reduced by ~ 4 mm in males, ~ 3 mm in females), nasal width (8-9 mm greater), upper lip height (> 3 mm), and eye width (greater by ~ 3 mm) compared to NAW subjects. All vertical measurements obtained were significantly different compared with NAW. Differences were observed in comparison with AA subjects, but less marked. Mouth width was similar in all groups. Angular measurements were variable. Neoclassical canons did not apply to the Kenyan population. Conclusions: Anthropometric measurements of NAW showed clear differences when compared with the Kenyan population, and variations exist with comparative AA data. The anthropometric data in terms of linear measurements, angular measurements, and proportional values described may serve as a database for facial analysis in the KenyanAfrican population.
