In this paper, we present our proposed magnetic induction based wireless communication system. The proposed system is designed to perform communication as well as distance measurement in underground environments. In order to improve the communication quality, we propose and implement the adaptive channel compensation technique. Based on the fact that the channel may be fast time-varying, we keep track of the channel status each time the data is received and accordingly compensate the channel coefficient for any change in the channel status. By using the proposed compensation technique, the developed platform can reliably communicate over distances of 10m while the packet error rate is being maintained under 5%. We also implement the distance measurement block that is useful for various applications that should promptly estimate the location of nearby nodes in communication. The distance between two nodes in communication is estimated by generating a table describing pairs of the magnetic signal strength and the corresponding distance. The experiment result shows that the platform can estimate the distance of a node located within 10m range with the measurement error less than 50cm.
The government has tried to develop a platform for systematically collecting and managing engineering education data for policy proposals. However, there have been few cases of big data analysis platform for policy proposals in engineering education, and it is difficult to determine the major function of the platform, the purpose of using big data, and the method of data collection. This study aims to collect the cases of big data analysis systems for the development of a big data system for educational policy proposals, and to conduct a study to analyze cases using the analysis frame of key elements to consider in developing a big data analysis platform. In order to analyze the case of big data system for engineering education policy proposals, 24 systems collecting and managing big data were selected. The analysis framework was developed based on literature reviews and the results of the case analysis were presented. The results of this study are expected to provide from macro-level such as what functions the platform should perform in developing a big data system and how to collect data, what analysis techniques should be adopted, and how to visualize the data analysis results.
Variety of data have been opened or connected by several levels of government. In smart city initiatives, open data become the source of a new business model. This paper is to foster ways of public open data (POD) by analyzing the start-up company that utilizes POD. In order to fulfill it, this paper adapts the case study research. Findings say that POD has potential to validate and further enrich the platform business. But to find which types of public open data are most prevalent is insufficient. To do this, it is more needed that sophisticated and many cases should be examined. However, this paper shows that platform business by using POD could lead to reduce the cost and increase the benefits for both providers and customers. From the findings, this paper shows that public open data has an important role not only to boost new venture creations which are prevalent ways of smart city but also to foster different platforms enabling new value capture and creation according to development of internet of things based on ICT technology.
Purpose: We present a scientometric review of the literature on platform government to serve three primary purposes: First, to cluster researches on platform government based on the research issues; second, to identify the major papers, authors, and keywords in the domain; and third, to explore the promising research areas of platform government. Design/methodology/approach: We collected the platform government research from Web of Science, and analyzed 1,536 articles that was published during time span of 1998-2019. Next, co-citation networks are constructed and analyzed by using CiteSpace to visualize the domain clusters and dynamic research trends in the platform government domain. Findings: We identified 13 sub areas of the platform government research: global investigation, consumer product quality, digital agora, civic crowd funding, and open data use etc. We also visualize the top 20 references with the strongest citation bursts, co-authors network, co-occurring keyword network, and timeline of co-citation clusters.
In order to implement the smart home environment, we need an intelligence service platform that learns the user's life style and behavioral patterns, and recommends appropriate services to the user. The intelligence service platform should embed a couple of effective and efficient data mining algorithms for learning from the data that is gathered from the smart home environment. In this study, we evaluate the suitability of data mining algorithms for smart home intelligent service platforms. In order to do this, we first develop an intelligent service scenario for smart home environment, which is utilized to derive functional and technical requirements for data mining algorithms that is equipped in the smart home intelligent service platform. We then evaluate the suitability of several data mining algorithms by employing the analytic hierarchy process technique. Applying the analytical hierarchy process technique, we first score the importance of functional and technical requirements through a hierarchical structure of pairwise comparisons made by experts, and then assess the suitability of data mining algorithms for each functional and technical requirements. There are several studies for smart home service and platforms, but most of the study have focused on a certain smart home service or a certain service platform implementation. In this study, we focus on the general requirements and suitability of data mining algorithms themselves that are equipped in smart home intelligent service platform. As a result, we provide a general guideline to choose appropriate data mining techniques when building a smart home intelligent service platform.
This paper presents an interactive locomotion controller using motion capture data and inverted pendulum model. Most of the data-driven character controller using motion capture data have two kinds of limitation. First, it needs many example motion capture data to generate realistic motion. Second, it is difficult to make natural-looking motion when characters navigate dynamic terrain. In this paper, we present a technique that uses dimension reduction technique to motion capture data together with the Gaussian process dynamical model (GPDM), and interpolates the low-dimensional data to make final motion. With the low-dimensional data, we can make realistic walking motion with few example motion capture data. In addition, we apply the inverted pendulum model (IPM) to calculate the root trajectory considering the real-time user input upon the dynamic terrain. Our method can be used in game, virtual training, and many real-time applications.
