  • A simple analytical model of rarefied channel flow is developed to predict the compression ratio in a helical drag pump. If the surface velocity is zero, the model reduces to a capillary leaks. Predictions of our model agree well with the Knudsen's data for capillary leaks in transition flow, in addition to giving a good account of the Knudsen minimum. Also, the present results are compared with experimental data, and good agreement is obtained over the entire pressure range from molecular to slip flow.

  • In this study, we designed cold gas propulsion system with minimum 0.25 mm nozzle and micro-thrust measurement system to analyze flow characteristic of micro propulsion system in ambient and vacuum condition. Argon and Nitrogen are used for propellant and the result of experiments is compared with CFD analysis and theory. But there is a point where reduced scale versions of conventional propulsion systems will no longer be practical. Therefore, a fundamentally different approach to propulsion systems was taken. That is thermal transpiration based micro propulsion system. It has no moving parts such as lubricants, pressurizing system and can pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only(cold to hot). We are advancing basic research of propulsion system based on thermal transpiration in vacuum conditions and had tried experiment process and theoretical access in advance. To characterize membrane of Knudsen pump, we select Polyimide material that has low thermal conductivity(0.29 W/mK) and can stand high temperature($300^{\circ}C$) for long time. And we fabricated hole diameter 1, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1 mm using precision manufacturing. Experimental results show that pressure gradient efficiency of Knudsen pump is increased to maximum 82% according to Knudsen number and thick membranes are more effective than thin membranes in transition flow regime.

  • As an alternative numerical method, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate a 2-dimensional pressure driven microchannel flow which comes from frequently in MEMS problems. The flow is assumed to be isothermal ideal gas flow. The flow field is calculated with various Knudsen numbers, pressure ratios and aspect ratios of the microchannel. The LBM can show the fundamental characteristics in microchannel flow such as velocity slip and nonlinear pressure drop.

  • A numerical simulation on nitrogen gas flow in a long parallel plate microchannel was performed to obtain the effect of compressibility and rarefaction on gaseous flow in microchannels. The simulation was based on steady. two dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations with noslip and first order slip boundary conditions. The channel was $1.2{\mu}m$ deep and $3000{\mu}m$ long. The Reynolds numbers were in the range of order from $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-1}$. So the flow was assumed to be laminar. The computations were performed on various pressure ratios. The outlet pressure was fixed to atmospheric pressure. The outlet Knudsen number was 0.0585, consequently the flow was in the slip flow regime. The computations were performed with the assumption of isothermal channel walls. The results were compared with the experimental data. The agreement was good.

  • The flow field in multiple fluid sphere systems was studied analytically. The expanded zero vorticity cell model based on Kuwabara's theory (1959) was applied and the effects of gas slippage at the collecting surface were considered. Also, the solid sphere system was extended to fluid sphere including the effects of the induced internal circulation inside the liquid droplet spheres or gas bubble systems. As a result, the obtained analytic solution was converged to the existing solutions for flow field around solid and bubble sphere systems with proper boundary conditions. Based on the resolved flow field, the terminal velocity around the collecting fluid spheres was obtained. Subsequently, this study evaluated the most general solution for flow field around the multiple fluid sphere systems. The obtained flow field in multiple fluid sphere could be used as a fundamental consideration of wet scrubber design and devices for removing particles by fluid-fluid interactions.

  • The performance of a turbomolecular pump(TMP) in both molecular and transition flow regions is predicted by the numerical solutions of the Boltzmann equation obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The compression characteristics of the TMP are investigated for a wide range of the Knudsen number( Kn ). The maximum compression ratios strongly depend on Kn in transition region, while do they weakly on Kn in free molecular flow region. The present numerical results of the single blade row in both molecular and transition regions are used to predict the overall performance of a TMP, which has three kinds of blade with 24-rows.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of key-hole geometry during high-energy density laser welding process. Unsteady phase-change heat transfer and fluid flow with the surface tension and recoil pressure are simulated. To model the overheated surface temperature and recoil pressure considering subsonic/sonic vapor flow, the one-dimensional vaporization models proposed by Ganesh and Knight are coupled over liquid-vapor interface. It is shown that the present model predicts well both the vaporization physics and the fluid flow in the thin liquid layer over the other model.

  • For rarefied gas flow regimes, physical phenomena such as velocity slip and temperature jump occur on the solid body surface. To predict these phenomena accurately, either the Navier-Stokes solver with a slip boundary condition or the direct simulation Monte Carlo method should be used. In the present study, flow simulations of a wedge were conducted in Mach-10 flow of argon gas for several different flow regimes using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with the Maxwell slip boundary condition. The results of the simulations were compared with those of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to assess the present method. It was found that the values of the velocity slip and the temperature jump predicted increase as the Knudsen number increases. Also, the results are comparatively reasonable up to the Knudsen number of 0.05.

  • The fluid mechanics and operating conditions of gas-lubricated proceeding bearings in micro rotating machinery such as micro polarization modulator and micro gas turbine are different from their larger size ones. Due to non-continuum effects, there is a slip of gas at the walls. Thus in this paper, the slip flow effect is considered to estimate the pressure distribution and load-carrying capacity of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings as the local Knudsen number at the minimum film thickness is greater than 0.01. Based on the compressible Reynolds equation with slip flow, the static characteristics of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings are obtained. Numerical predictions compare the pressure distribution and load capacity considering slip flow with the performance of micro proceeding bearings without slip f]ow for a range of bearing numbers and eccentricities. The results clearly show that the slip flow effect on the static characteristics is considerable and becomes more significant as temperature increases.
