  • Plant disease caused by root-knot nematode is a major problem in crop production. Using of chemical pesticides, one of the most efficient methods to control nematodes, have raised issues in toxicity to humans and animals and environmental pollution. In this study, to select actinomycete strains that have potential to serve as a microbial agent for control of nematodes, we investigated nematicidal activity of culture broth from 670 Streptomyces isolates. A culture filtrate of KRA15-528 isolate that was identified as S. flavogriseus on the basis of 16S rRNA sequence analysis, showed strong nematicidal activity against second stage of juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita and inhibited egg hatching; exposure to 10% of culture filtrate resulted in 71% juvenile mortality at 48 hours afters treatment and suppressed egg hatching by 54% at 9 days after treatment. When the KRA15-528 culture filtrate was partitioned with ethyl acetate and butanol, ethyl acetate layer exclusively showed strong activity; 91%, 53%, 30% of mortality at 1,000, 500, $250{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Additionally, the culture filtrate suppressed gall formation on cucumber plant by M. incognita with no phytotoxicity. These results suggest that S. flavogriseus KRA15-528 has potential to serve as a microbial nematicide for the control of root-knot nematode disease.

  • Effects of organic matter content in soil on activity. vertical migration. and persistence of two nernaticides. carbofuran and ethoprophos. to root-knot nematode, Mrloitlog!~iei ~lcognita.w ere investigated. As the organic matter content increased. activity of the nernaticides tended to be reduced. Both nematicides exhibited control values of more than 80'k' to M. iix.o,yilit~iln 0-2 cm depth soil layer from the surface. regi~rdless of organic matter content in soil. In 2-4 cm depth soil layer. however. the control value of the neniaticides varied with the organic niatter content in soil. The control value of carbofuran in the soil layer was ranged from I0 to 30'2,. depending on the soil organic niatter content. In contrast. ethoprophos had no control value against M. i/ic.o,ytlitcr in the \oil layer, except that the nematicide had a control value of 30% when the organic matter content was 0.4%. Furthermore. ethoprophos had no effect on controlling M. i/ic.o,gtiitrr in soil layer of below 4cm. whereas control values of carbofuran were approximately from 5 to 20% in all test soils having different organic matter contents. These results indicate that carbofuran has more vertical migration effect than ethoprophos. Persistence of the two neniaticides was also decreased with increasing soil organic matter content. Half life of carbofuran was 2-3 weeks in soil containing 0.4% organic matter, whereas it was found to be I week in soils containning 0.8 ant1 1.6% of organic matter. On the other hand. activity of ethoprophos was reduced to half in 3-3 weeks and in 2-3 weeks in soil containing 0.4 and 0.8%, and 1.6%) of organic matter, respectively. However, no activity of the both nernaticides was found in soil containing 3.2% of organic matter.

  • Using superoxide dismutase (SOD)-deficient mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the oxygen toxicity induced by paraquat was studied. In aerobic culture condition, yeasts lacking MnSOD (milochondrial SOD) showed more significant growth retardation than CuZnSOD (cytoplasmic SOD)-deficient yeasts. However, not so big differences in growth pattern of those mutants compared with wild type were observed under anaerobic condition. When exposed to paraquat, the growth of yeasts lacking CuZnSOD was severely affected by higher than 0.01mM of paraquat in culture medium. By the analysis of several cellular components ivolved in free radical generating and scavenging system, it was found that, under aerobic condition, the content of lipid peroxides in cell membrane as well as cellular activity of glutathion peroxidase of CuZnSOD-deficient mutants was increased in the presence of paraquat, although significant decrease of catalase activity was observed in those stratns. In MnSOD-deficient yeast, however, increment in cellular activity of glutathion peroxldase and catalase by paraquat was observed without any deterioration of membrane lipid. It implies that the lack of mitochondrial SOD could be compensated by both of glutathion peroxldase and catalase, but that only glutathion peroxidase might act for CuZnSOD in cytoplasm. In contrast, all of SOD-deficient mutants showed a significant decrease in catalase activity, but slight increase in the activities of glutathion peroxidase, when cultivated anaerobically in the medium containing paraquat. Nevertheless, any significant changes of lipid peroxides in cell membranes were not observed during anaerobic cultivation of SOD-deficient mutants. It suggests that a little amount of free radicals generated by paraquat under anaerobic condition could be sufficiently overcome by glutathion peroxidase but not by catalase.

  • Purpose: This study reported the outcomes following the use of bioabsorbable knotless anchor in patients with anterior instability of shoulder. Methods: We studied fifteen cases with traumatic anterior shoulder instability underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair with bioabsorbable knotless suture anchor between January 2003 and June 2003. Among fifteen patients, fourteen were male and one was female, with a mean patient age of 24 years (range 16-42). The mean follow-up was 14 months (range 12-18 months). We compared with operation time of twenty cases of arthroscopic Bankart repair by the suture anchor technique between January 2002 and October 2002. Results: Neither recurrent dislocation nor subluxation was happened in postoperative follow-up. Mean score for functional evaluation by Rowe et al. was 89.4 and that for patient subjective satisfaction was 87,5. At last follow-up period, average shoulder range of motion for flexion and external rotation was 171$^{\circ}$ and 54$^{\circ}$ respectively. All patients were satisfied except three who had an apprehension at the follow up. During Bankart repair, it took an average of 25.5 minutes for one knot with the use of suture anchor technique whereas an average of 16.5 minutes for one knot with the use of bioabsorbable knotless anchor. Significantly, we saved operation time with the use of bioabsorbable knotless anchor (P<0.05).Conclusion: Repairing the Bankart lesion with the use of knotless anchor technique has the advantage of obtaining good capsular tensioning and saving operation time. And it is considered to be very successful in treating shoulder instability without recurrent dislocation or subluxation.

  • An nematophagous fungi Arthrobotrys thaumasia Nema-1 and Bacillus subtilis C-9, which degrade the collagen and gelatin, were isolated from horticulture plantation soil in Kyungpook Sungju-gun Seonnam-myun and Chungnam Gongju-gun Woosung-myun to develop biological nematode pesticide. When $5,000mg\;kg^{-1}$ of A. thaumasia Nema-1 nematicide powder ($7.0{\times}10^3cfu\;g^{-1}$) was treated to pot including Meloidogyne incognita, the number of nematode's egg mass, which is a index of nematicidal activity, decreased to 35% compared to control. While the number of nematode's egg mass decreased to 67% by treating the nematicide powder mixture of $5,000mg\;kg^{-1}$ Nema-1 and B. subtilis C-9 ($8.5{\times}10^5cfu\;g^{-1}$). Furthermore the number of nematode's egg mass of the mixture containing cinnamon extract $10mg\;kg^{-1}$, each $5,000mg\;kg^{-1}$ of Nema-1 and C-9 nematicide powder was decreased to 84%, comparing to the result showed the number of nematode's egg mass decreased to 24%, by the treatment of chemical nemato pesticide Fosthiazate $24mg\;kg^{-1}$. These results suggested the mixture of microorganisms and plant extract was more effective biological nematicide than the case of only microorganism or plant extract for nematode control.

  • The finite element method (FEM) has been used for various fields like mathematics and engineering. However, the FEM has a difficulty in describing the geometric shape exactly due to its property of piecewise linear discretization. Recently, however, a so-called isogeometric analysis method that uses the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) basis function has been developed. The NURBS can be used to describe the geometry exactly and play a role of basis functions for the response analysis. Nevertheless, constructing the NURBS basis functions in analysis is as costly as a meshing process in the FEM. Since the isogeometric method shares geometric data with CAD, it is possible to intactly import the model data from commercial CAD tools. In this paper, we use the Rhinoceros 3D software to create CAD models and export in the form of STEP file. The information of knot vectors and control points in the NURBS is utilized in the isogeometric analysis. Through some numerical examples, the accuracy of isogeometric method is compared with that of FEM. Also, the efficiency of the isogeometric method that includes the CAD and CAE in a unified framework is verified.

  • The 13 genre paintings by Junkeun Kim in the book "Korean Games(by Stewart Culin 1858~1929)" were used to study the late $19^{th}$ century's basic costumes and Games style in Korea. The people who appear in the paintings are 26 adult males, 2 minor males, 2 adult females and 3 kisaengs. Typical men wore 'Jeogori' which had various colors and white linings with a reached hip line, and knotted with a 'go-rum' on the right side. They also wore, white colored 'Baji' with colorful sash that were knot below knee or ankle together with 'Hang-jun' or 'Daenim'. They wore 'Beoseon'. Some men wore 'Po' whose colors were blue, green, indigo, white. The general women wore 'Jeogori' in deep green and light pink, indigo, green, red, and they matched with colors for 'Kit' and, 'Go-rum', 'Kut-dong' and its 'Go-rum' was short and narrow. It was so fit and short with narrow sleeve. It had 'Dunggun-kit'(round head collar) with white 'Dong-jung' and so it fit at neck. They wore 'Chi-ma' whose color was red, light green, or light indigo. It contrasted with 'Jeogori'. The width of 'Chi-ma' was big enough. Then white inner slacks came out under the skirt. Traditional Korean games can be classified according to age and gender. Then the games can be further classified into three categories : men's games, women's games, and games for all. The games for adult are an archery practice, hunting, shovel work with a karae, making a bow, drawing Jongkung-chart, Korean chess, playing paduk, and the Korean card game. A swing is a game for women. Games for both men and women are dice play, and domino game. Games for both adult and minor males are sledge, and tightrope walking. Through genre paintings in the $19^{th}$ century, I reached a conclusion that basic costumes are similar to 'Hanbok' at the present time and the method of wearing them has not changed much. It appears that the originality of traditional costumes has been maintained.

  • Plant parasitic nematodes, Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus spp., are mostly detected in imported bulbs and tubers including a ginger, Zingiber officinale in Korea by quarantine inspection. However, there is little information on hot water immersion treatment (HWIT) for control of exotic nematodes, which induce economic loss by discard or send back to exporter, in imported gingers. In here, we determined that mortality of two plant parasitic nematodes and thermal stability of ginger. Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus spp. were completely killed at $48^{\circ}C$ and $49^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec by HWIT. Thermal conduction of Z. officinale to reach a target temperature as $50^{\circ}C$ take 10~32 min and 6~16 min for core and inner 5 mm region from surface, respectively. When ginger exposed at $51^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, growth of Z. officinale was not affected by heat treatment compared with control. Based on these results, HWIT at $51^{\circ}C$ for 30 min completely killed artificially infected juveniles of Meloidogyne spp. in Z. officinale. Therefore, this condition for HWIT will be used as fundamental information on phytosanitory to kill two plant parasitic nematodes without damage on ginger.

  • This study using the active vibration control technique attempts to alleviate numerically the airframe vibration of a UH-60A helicopter. The AVCS(Active Vibration Control System) is applied to reduce the 4/rev vibration responses at the specified locations of the UH-60A airframe. The 4/rev hub vibratory loads of the UH-60A rotor is predicted using the nonlinear flexible dynamics analysis code, DYMORE II. Various tools such as NDARC, MSC.NASTRAN, and MATLAB Simulink are used for the AVCS simulation with five CRFGs and seven accelerometers. At a flight speed of 158knots, the predicted 4/rev hub vibratory loads of UH-60A rotor excite the airframe, and then the 4/rev vibration responses at the specified airframe positions such as the pilot seat, rotor-fuselage joint, mid-cabin, and aft-cabin are calculated without and with AVCS. The 4/rev vibration responses at all the locations and directions are reduced by from 25.14 to 96.05% when AVCS is used, as compared to the baseline results without AVCS.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop rapid methods for distinguishing between Heterodera schachtii and H. glycines detected from chinese cabbage fields of highland in Gangwon, Korea. To do this, we performed PCR-RFLP and PCR with the primers set developed in this study for GC147, GC408 and PM001 population, H. schachtii, and YS224, DA142 and BC115 population, H. glycines. Eight restriction enzymes generated RFLP profiles of mtDNA COI region for populations of H. schachtii and H. glycines, repectively. As a result, treatment of two restriction enzymes, RsaI and HinfI, were allowed to distinguish H. schachtii from H. glycines based on the differences of DNA band patterns. The primer set, #JBS1, #JBG1 and #JB3R, amplified specific fragments with 277 and 339 bp of H. schachtii, 339 bp of H. glycines, respectively, while it did not amplify fragments from three root-knot nematodes and two root-lesion nematodes. Thus, the primer set developed in this study could be a good method, which is used to distinguish between H. schachtii and H. glycines.
