  • The Hippo signaling pathway controls nuclear accumulation and stability of the transcriptional coregulator YAP and its paralog TAZ. The activity of Hippo-YAP signaling is influenced not only by biochemical signals, but also by cell shape and mechanical tension transmitted through cell-cell junctions and cell-matrix adhesions. Data accumulated thus far indicates that the actin cytoskeleton is a key mediator of the regulation of Hippo-YAP signaling by means of a variety of biochemical and mechanical cues. In this review, we have outlined the role of actin dynamics and actin-associated proteins in the regulation of Hippo-YAP signaling. In addition, we discuss actin-mediated regulation of YAP/TAZ activity independent of the core Hippo kinases MST and LATS. Although our understanding of the link between Hippo-YAP signaling and the actin cytoskeleton is progressing rapidly, many open questions remain.

  • This study aims at shedding light on two questions: 1) how livelihood strategies hired by heterogeneous farm households differ and in what aspect, and 2) would the strategy change over time or remain identical across farm types? Using 2013-2017 Farm Economy Survey panel data, we divide the sample farms into 4 sub-groups based on income level and sources. Key findings are as follows. First, regardless of farm types, strong path dependency has been observed. That is, lots of farms are likely (enforced) to maintain the livelihood strategies, accounting for why many farms fail to response to market and/or policy signals. Second, along with compounding risks, farms are more vulnerable to specific sorts risks. Third, based on the findings, we made policy suggestions.

  • The System of communication with wireless devices is experiencing a huge growth. While traditional communication paradigms deal with fixed networks, mobility raises a new set of questions, techniques, and solutions. In order to realize service mobility, there is a need of protocol that can support mobility while nodes are communicating without any disruption of their connection status. This paper proposes a handover authentication protocol for mobility support. Careful considerations must be taken in priority to security issues since many unreliable public and private resources; both networks and devices are involved. The protocol is based on public key cryptography with Diffie-Hellman algorithm which provides security against both leakage-resilience of private keys on untrustworthy devices and forward secrecy.

  • This paper presents the Global van Hiele (GVH) questionnaire as a tool for mapping knowledge and understanding of plane and solid geometry. The questionnaire facilitates identification of the respondents' mastery of the first three levels of thinking according to van Hiele theory with regard to key geometrical topics. Teacher-educators can apply this questionnaire for checking preliminary knowledge of mathematics teaching candidates or pre-service teachers. Moreover, it can be used when planning a course or granting exemption from studying in basic geometry courses. The questionnaire can also serve high school mathematics teachers who are interested in exposing their students to multiple-choice questions in geometry.

  • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is characterized by insulin resistance and impaired insulim secretion. The transgenic technology, in which a specific gene can be introduced or deleted to study its function, has been established. A number of transgenic mice, altered the expression of genes potentially involved in insulin action or pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell function, have recently been developed to address questions concerning NIDDM. Thransgenic mice model may help understanding the molecular basis of complex patho-physiologies of NIDDM. This review outlines the new insights obtained from the studies of transgenic mice that overxpress or show decreased expression of putative key genes involved in the regulation of insulin resistance and pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell function, therefore in the control of glucose homeostasis.

  • Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) has been used in various technological fields to assist regulatory agencies, managerial decision makers, and systems designers in assessing and mitigating the risks inherent in these complex arrangements. Has PRA delivered on its promise? How do we gage PRA performance? Are our expectations about value of PRA realistic? Are there disparities between what we get and what we think we are getting form PRA and its various derivatives? Do current PRAs reflect the knowledge gained from actual events? How do we address potential gaps? These are some of the questions that have been raised over the years since the inception of the field more than forty years ago. This paper offers a brief assessment of PRA as a technical discipline in theory and practice, its key strengths and weaknesses, and suggestions on ways to address real and perceived shortcomings.

  • What is the basis of the political polarization in Thailand? What are the key differences between the opposing camps? This paper aims to answer these questions at the individual level, using a national survey conducted by the authors between July and August 2017. The paper argues that the color-based polarizations in Thailand are significant and deeply rooted in a complicated array of demographic, attitudinal, and political dimensions. That is, despite their relative differences in demographics and socioeconomic status, the Yellow Shirt and Red Shirt supporters differ in party identification and democratic values. This finding indicates that the struggle between the conflicting groups in this country is not just about competing interests, but about the identities and basic values underlying the "rules of the political game."

  • There were no Korean evidence-based multidisciplinary guidelines for gastric cancer. Experts from related societies developed guidelines de novo to meet Korean circumstances and requirements, including 23 recommendation statements for diagnosis (n=9) and treatment (n=14) based on relevant key questions. The quality of the evidence was rated according to the GRADE evidence evaluation framework and the recommendation grades were classified as either strong or weak. The topics of the guidelines cover diagnostic modalities (endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and radiologic diagnosis), treatment modalities (surgery, therapeutic endoscopy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy), and pathologic evaluation. Major limitation of the present guideline is that there is no enough evidences in Korea. Therefore, clinical studies about gastric cancer for evidence generation should be conducted.

  • The general aim of this article is to explicate what can be researched in our field based on the new understanding on the ability of human visual intelligence. To follow this aim, three key discussions were followed. The first is to explain why the human visual intelligence research is so important in our field and how it was neglected. The basic orientations of the research questions used in its framing and in answering are reviewed. After reviewing traditional research orientations, as the second discussion, alternative, more useful perspective for thinking about human visual intelligence is suggested. And the possibility of contribution for the future research in general is discussed. In doing so, human visual intelligence was defined in rather practically oriented ways rather than theoretically oriented ones. More practical perspectives were suggested. The third discussion is to show how to use the alternative perspectives of human visual intelligence in the areas of educational technology research. It was hoped that the article lays out conceptual groundwork for generation of educational technology research frameworks which can be used for the research conduct, reproduction and sharing by adopting practically oriented views on human visual intelligence as a new territory of educational technology research.
