  • The purpose of this study is to find out the structural relations among the changing of internet use for learning, online game use, and perceived achievement. To complete this study, we set three research models and verified our hypotheses from the research models. We used Korean Youth Panel Study (KYPS) data, which surveyed beginning with fourth grade 2,844 elementary school students. We discovered that (a) there was a statically significant individual variability in initial levels and rates of change in internet use for learning. The change of trajectory was declined. (b) We also found out both initial state and changing rate of internet use for learning positively affect perceived academic achievement. (c) Lastly our study found both the concurrent and lag effects support the developmental relation between internet use for learning and game use in young adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between child maltreatment, protective factors, and resilience in elementary school students. It was especially focused on what direct effect of the risk factor(child maltreatment) and protective factors to child resilience, and how protective factors affect the resilience of maltreated child. In the concrete, this study intended to find out whether protective factors mediate between child maltreatment and resilience. This study based on data from the first wave of 'Korean Youth Panel Survey(KYPS)' and subjects consisted of 2,844 4th grade elementary school students. In addition, to test the proposed models, the Mplus-structural equation modeling-was used. The major findings are as follows: First, when child maltreatment increased, resilience decreased. Second, when protective factors increased, resilience increased. Third, protective factors act as buffers against the negative effects of child maltreatment on resilience by mediation. Results indicated that child maltreatment related negatively to resilience and protective factors related positively to resilience. In addition, a mediational model in which protective factors mediates child maltreatment and resilience was supported. In conclusion, various theoretical and practical implications for social work practice focusing on the maltreated children were discussed.

  • Given the 4 contexts-parents, friends, teachers and community- of adolescents, this research verified the casual relationships between each contextual support and the suicidal impulse, and the gender difference. The 4-year longitudinal data(KYPS) collected from 3,697 adolescents were used in this study. Using the Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model, the suicidal impulse was consistently present from the 3rd grade in middle school to the 3rd grade in high school with significant stability. Gender differences were founded in the effect of parental support among the 3rd grade in middle school. Also the negative effect of friends' support on the suicidal impulse among the first grade high school students. The effects were more stronger for girls than boys. Previous supports by teachers and community had no significant effects on later suicidal impulses. These results suggest that the study of suicidal impulse needs to examine the complex support system of multiple context layers.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of social capital in families on depression of adolescents. It also examines whether adolescents' self-esteem mediates the relationships between social capital in families and depression. This study uses 2,306 adolescents drawn from the $3^{rd}-5^{th}$ Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). The results are as follows. First, adolescents with high level of social capital in families are less likely to experience depression. Second, adolescents with high level of social capital are more likely to have high level of self-esteem. Third, adolescents with high level of self-esteem are less likely to experience depression. Lastly, social capital in families has impacts on depression through self-esteem. Thus, it is necessary to increase social capital in families to address adolescents' depression. Developing intimate relationships between parents and adolescents is needed to increase social capital in families. It is also necessary to develop programs and services to enhance self-esteem of adolescents, which will prevent or address adolescents' depression.

  • This study investigated the extraction algorithm fitting for variables of adolescents' computer use type with the sample from KYPS data (3409 in the second grade of the junior high school; 1704 boys and 1705 girls). The results of the decision tree model revealed that : (1) Gender, computer use time, misdeed friends, parent supervision, other agreement of misdeed, parent study expectation, self-control, teacher attachment, and sibling relation were significant for entertainment type. (2) Gender, cyberclub, computer use time, self-belief, online misdeed were significant for relation type. (3) Study enthusiasm, personal study time, optimistic disposition, study and spare time, cyberclub, self-belief, and other people criticism were significant for information type. These results suggest that adolescents' diverse conditions should be considered for using computer more efficiently.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the predicting factors on the increase in computer entertainment behavior with the sample from KYPS data. The results of the Decision Tree model revealed that: (1) Neighbor supervision, self-belief, parent attachment, life satisfaction, and peer attachment were significant for the increase in computer entertainment behavior. (2) Neighbor supervision, class participation and leisure satisfaction were significant for male students' increase in computer entertainment behavior. (3) Optimistic disposition, teacher attachment, and peer attachment were significant for female students' increase in computer entertainment behavior. These results suggest that meaningful factors and their divers interactions should be considered in methods and programs for regulating and preventing the increase in computer entertainment behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to identify different adolescent smoking trajectories in Korea; and 2) to examine predictors of those smoking trajectories within a social developmental frame. Data were from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS), a longitudinal study of 3,449 youths followed since 2003. Using semi-parametric group-based modeling, four smoking trajectories were identified: non initiators, late onsetters, experimenters, and escalators. Multinomial logistic regressions were then used to identify risk and protective factors that distinguish the trajectory groups from one another. Among non smokers at age 13, late onsetters were distinguished from non initiators by a variety of factors in every ecological domain. Among youths who already smoked at age 13, escalators who increased their smoking were distinguished from experimenters who almost desisted from smoking by age 17 by self-esteem and academic achievement. Finally, implications for youth welfare practice from this study were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to invest the mediating effect of the mobile phone addiction and the aggression within the path which the social withdrawal have explained the community spirit of an university student. For the purpose, this study have chosen a total of 1,347 cases as an analysis target from the Korean Youth-Child Pannel Study(KYPS) 7th wave. And this study have used the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) from AMOS 18.0 as an analysis method. This study have also used sobel test for finding out the effectiveness of the mediating path. This study found these analysis results through the analysis method which this study have suggested. First, this study have verified the effectiveness of the direct path that the social withdrawal predicted the community spirit of an university student. Second, this study have found the effectiveness of the mediating path composed by the mobile phone addiction and the aggression. As these analysis results, this study have proposed the implication for the community spirit of an university student and suggestion for a follow-up study.

In this study, Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) of AMOS 18.0 was applied as an analysis method, and sobel test was applied for utilizing the significance of the mediating effect. The research result were as follows through the presented research method. Firstly, this study has proved the effectiveness of the direct path that the perception of the local community predicted the quality of the life of adolescence. Secondary, this study has verified the effectiveness of the indirect path of the social withdrawal and the community spirit. Based on these findings, this study has presented the intervention methods for the quality of the life of adolescence and the suggestion for the future research.

  • This study examined the moderating role of self-control and emotion regulation in the relationship between academic stress and mental health among Korean adolescents. The Korean Youth Panel Study (KYPS) was used as sample data with a total of 3121 $11^{th}$ grade students involved in this study. Hierarchical multiple regression was applied to test the moderation model following Baron & Kenny's (1986) model. Results revealed that self-control (for male adolescents) and emotion regulation (for female adolescents) played the role of moderators in the relationship between academic stress and mental health problems. Academic stress proved to have a negative effect on mental health of adolescents.
