  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed for a 7 ton class turbopump applied to the third stage LRE(Liquid Rocket Engine) of the KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle). Based on the heritage of the developed experimental 30 ton class turbopump and developing 75 ton class turbopump for the KSLV first and second stage LRE, the 7 ton class turbopump is designed as an one-axis rotor turbopump. Two rotor systems comprised of one oxidizer pump assembly and the other fuel pump-turbine assembly are connected each other using a spline shaft and operating at a design speed. Through the rotordynamic analysis, it is investigated that the turbopump acquires sufficient separate margin of critical speed as a sub-critical rotor.

  • Programs of energy balance, mode analysis and transient analysis for a liquid rocket engine have been introduced. The analysis methods have been verified through comparison between the present results, and the results of the other program and experimental data. An energy balance analysis is used for engine system design at the early development phase. A mode analysis is used for decision of engine operation conditions and test conditions, and studying deviation of an engine performance. A transient analysis can predict a propellant flow rate, thrust, impulse at transient phase. It is essential to establish a startup/shut down sequence. The analysis programs will be used to develop the engines of KSLV-II.

  • A pyrogen type igniter was designed to satisfy the requirements of KSLV-I Kick Motor system. To insure the reliability of the igniter before the production of the flight model, we have been performed the structure, environmental, combustion tests. The hydraulic test was carried out to confirm the strength of the components of the igniter. The shock and vibration tests were considered to check whether the igniter operates normally under the severe environmental condition. The combustion tests were also performed to understand the ignition characteristics with the variation of initial condition. Finally, we confirmed that the igniter could provide the acceptable energy to ignite the propellant of kick motor at the ground test.

  • A space launch vehicle is a very complex system composed of many kinds of components. It is necessary for even a small piece of components in it to be free of defects, malfunctions and to operate normally for the sake of the mission success. For these reasous, a variety of tests are carried out. Burn-in test is to detect latent material and workmanship defects which occurs early in the components use. Developed countries for the space technology have considered the burn-in test for flight vehicles in the standard test documents and performed it. Referred to the documents, application methods of burn-in test will be considered for the components of domestic space launch vehicles such as KSLV-I in this document.

  • The thrust axis alignment of the launch vehicle is very important because the misalignment causes the unstable attitude control and results in mission failure. Generally, optical methods such as digital theodolite and laser tracker and mechanical method such as turn table method are used to align the thrust axis. This article deals with the simple method using inclinometer based on the gravitational direction. The inclinometer indicates zero degree when that is located on the perpendicular plate to gravitational direction. This method needs two inclinometer, such as standard and alignment ones and uses the angle difference as the reference data to adjust the TVC actuator offset.

  • In this study, design of LCTS(Launch Complex Thermostatting System), which is one of ground support equipments for KSLV-I, is analyzed based on CDP(Critical Design Package) provided by Russia. The thermo-hydraulic design of air preparation compartment and hydraulic design of air heating & distribution compartment performed. Also numerical simulation of air heating & distribution compartment was conducted and compared with actual measurement data. Finally, insulation design of system was analyzed. Designing method of LCTS will be helpful in developing or modifying LCTS for new launch vehicle.

  • In this paper we carried out a design study for an unmanned Mars missionsuitable for Republic of Korea. The mission will use a KSLV series launch system, which is to place a one tonne payload into the LEO. We calculated the velocityincrements(AV) required for departure from Earth and insertion into the orbitaround Mars based on the mission opportunity data provided by NASA. Two typesof Mars modules - entry type and orbiter type - were considered in this studyWe calculated the mass of TPS(therma1 protection system) for the entry tvpe Marsmodule based on the heat transfer rate and heat load from the Mars atmosphere tothe surface of the TPS. The heat transfer rate and heat load were obtained throughan entry trajectory calculation. For the orbiter type Mars module, we calcuIated themass breakdown of the additional spacecraft which is to insert the Mars moduleinto the orbit around Mars. Other mass items were determined by proportioningfrom the existing Mars modules. This paper finally proposes the payload capacitiesfor each types of Mars modules.

  • KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) is achieving the KSLV program according to National Space Technology Development Program. In this paper, the authors are intend to introduce the Integrated Power Plant(IPP) test facility which will be constructed for the variety of tests on KSLV program. IPP test facility refers to comprehensive testing equipment for liquid rocket launch vehicle. Using this facility, KARI can verify the adaptedness of parts and subsystems for launch vehicle and finally can qualify the system characteristics of launch vehicle doing kinds of test including hot firing test. IPP test facility will make it possible to simulate the vehicle launching circumstances and to predict the performance of launch vehicle during its flight test.

  • We had research to conduct interrelationships between sensors using postprocessing analysis with the Fuzzy-Kalman Filtering Auto-Correlation about Real Time Simulator data of the NaroSC LCS in case of a fully blind situation scenario. The conducted interrelations are same harmony with relations in scenario. We had analyzed signals of sensors reverse-using a optimization character of Fuzzy-Kalman Filter. As our research conclusion, We had recognized possibilities of signal processing about the KSLV-1, on-board payloads, general equipments of ground support which apply to multi sensor systems.

  • The 2nd stage Kick Motor under the national aerospace middle and long term plan operates over the height of 300Km. Rocket Motors, designed for operation in high altitude, need nozzles with large expansion ratio to improve thrust efficiency. Hence, to evaluate the performance of such rocket motors on the ground, similar low pressure with the operating condition has to be made for the ground test to prevent flow separation in the nozzle. This study is for the installation of the high altitude test facility and test result for Kick Motor.
