  • Recently, discarding of reuse of fly ashes produced from combined heat power plant of thermal power plant as a by-product causes several problems. Esepecially, the fly ash from Ulsan Pertrochemical Serviec Co, classified as class C is the first by-product to be reused or discarded. For the reuse of the class C fly ash, it is necessary to prepare and provide domestic specifications because there is no specifications on the fly ash of class C from combined heat power plant. Therefore, this study dealt with a scheme of introducing class C fly ash to the korean industrial standard.

  • Chemical reaction tests were performed to assess the properties of hardened specimens of cement pastes (KS-1 Portland and Class G) exposed to supercritical CO2 for 1, 10, and 100 days. After exposure, the samples' measured permeability and strength were compared with values measured for pristine samples. The pristine cements had permeabilities of 0.009~0.025 mD, which increased by one order of magnitude after 100 days of exposure (to 0.11~0.29 mD). The enhancement of permeability is attributed to the stress release experienced by the samples after removal from the pressure vessel after exposure. Despite its enhancement, the measured permeability mostly remained lower than the API (American Petroleum Institute) recommended maximum value of 0.2 mD. The degradation of the cement samples due to exposure to supercritical CO2 led to a layer of altered material advancing inwards from the sample edges. The Vickers hardness in the altered zone was much higher than that in the unaltered zone, possibly owing to the increase in density and the decrease in porosity due to the carbonation that occurred in the altered zone. Hardness close to the edge within the altered zone was found to have decreased significantly, which is attributed to the conversion of C-S-H into less-strong amorphous silica.

  • Coal briquette use has dramatically increased because of high oil prices. Hence, it is necessary to develop an environment-friendly recycling technique of the coal briquette ash. The coal briquette ash contains a large amount of an unburned carbon content and a mullite with high thermal property, so it is considered to be used as raw materials of sintered eco-brick. This study aimed to investigate on how the unburned carbon affects properties of the sintered eco-brick. The eco-brick was mixed with the ratio of 50 wt% coal briquette ash having the unburned carbon 10.5 wt% and 50 wt% cullet, then being sintered at $950^{\circ}C$, which of the compressive strength was in line with the first class of the sintered clay brick standard(KS L 4201). In particular, the compressive strength of the sintered eco-brick was equal to the first class of the KS L 4201 despite the increase of mixing ratio for coal briquette ash with 1.0 wt% unburned carbon to 70 wt%.

  • Now, Korea National Railroad is planning many ways to increase the maximum operating speed of train up to 200km/h by 2010. Among those ways, connecting conventional line with the KTX is the strongest alternative. Mostly, conventional lines are consisting of both KS50N and KS6O rail. However, the excessive abrasion might be occurred between wheel and rail when the KTX designed to operate on UIC60 is operating on the conventional line. On this study, new standard of 60kg-class rail considered suitability for both KTX and wheel used in conventional line is presented. It seems to be an effective solution for increasing maintenance costs expected when commercial speed of conventional line is increasing.

  • It was found that there was no problem in recycling by-products (waste rock and tailings) from Yangyang iron mine themselves through matter conversion because they are not hazardous according to results of KSLT method. In case of using tailings as sub-materials of cement, it recommended the use of less than 3% tailings dosage not to exceed 0.6% of total alkali ($R_2O$) content based on standard quality of portland cement (KS L 5201). Non sintered eco-brick corresponding to class 1 quality of recycled clay brick (KS I 3013) can replace 15% of cement with tailings and 100% of general fine aggregate with waste rock from iron mine. As mentioned above, recycling the by-products (waste rock and tailings) as sub-materials of cement and non sintered eco-brick could gain both environmental and economic benefits, that is, reduction of scale and maintenance cost of tailing ponds, decrease of energy use and $CO_2$ emission.

  • In this study, we have quantitatively estimated the mechanical properties of structural welding steels widely used in steel structures after correcting the millsheets of the steels using statistical technique. From this result, in present, the mechanical properties of the steels produced in domestics have satisfied the prescribed values in Korean Standards. The mechanical properties of the steels were dependent upon the plate thickness & class of the steels. Also, there have been linear relations between the plate thickness & class of the steels and the mechanical properties of the steels. And the results of this study have shown the similar tendencies with the existing results. Because the upper limit value of yield strength is not prescribed at Korean Standards in present, it is necessary to prescribe the upper limit value of yielding ratio(or yield strength) in order to assure the deformation performance of the steels.

  • This paper deals with the effectiveness of a fiber optic solar lighting system that uses a Fresnel lens mounted on a two-axis solar tracker. A series of comparative analyses were made concerning its performance as compared to fluorescent lighting by using a simulation model based on ECOTECT and RADIANCE as well as referring to actual data. ECOTECT was used to model the test room (space) while RADIANCE was used for its indoor lighting conditions (environment). It was found that the average indoor light levels of fluorescent lighting fully satisfy the KS standard (KS A 3011, general office, class [G]: 300-400-600 lux) whereas those of the solar lighting with light diffusers depends on the occlusion factor of roller shades installed on the south window.

  • This study was conducted to recycle flotation tailings as non-sintered construction materials considering the economic and eco-friendly treatments. The particle size distribution( median $220\;{\mu}m$) of flotation tailings from Soon-shin mine was confirmed to be larger than that(median $140\;{\mu}m$) of tailings from Sam-kwang mine. Thus we investigated the properties of non-sintered eco-brick producted with the tailings from Sam-kwang mine and non-sintered water permeable block producted with the tailings from Soon-shin mine. Compressive strength of non-sintered water permeable block which was made with less than 25 wt% of tailings from Soon-shin mine was met with products class(over 14.70 MPa) of water permeable concrete(EL 245) from KEITL. Meanwhile, the coefficient of its permeability wasn't met with the products class( over $1.0{\times}10^{-2}\;cm/sec$). The properties of non-sintered eco-brick with less than 40 wt% of tailings from Sam-kwang mine were satisfied with third class in sintered clay brick products standard(KS L 4201). The non-sintered eco-brick as a result of leaching test on heavy metals by KSLT was verified to be environmentally stabile.

  • This study aims to recycle redmud which is a byproduct in the alumina industry. Redmud ceramics were prepared according to the type of raw materials by blending redmud with the raw materials used in the conventional clay bricks. In this paper, the compressive strength, water absorption ratio, and shrinkage of redmud ceramics prepared by mixing clay bricks were evaluated. Compressive strength and absorption ratio of redmud ceramics were compared with the clay brick criteria of KS L 4201. At the firing temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$, the specimens containing redmud only and the redmud with sandy loam and black clay were found to satisfy the 1st class of clay brick. The quality standard of compressive strength and absorption ratio was obtained by firing redmud with black clay and sandy loam at $1200^{\circ}C$. Also, when the redmud was mixed with black clay and feldspar, the 2nd class was satisfied when the sample was fired at $1100^{\circ}C$.
