  • We empirically investigate the option leverage property that should be priced under much more general conditions than the Black-Scholes assumptions and the option redundancy property that is based on the assumption that the underlying asset price follows a one-dimensional diffusion process and examine the systematic risk factors implied in the return dynamics of KOSPI 200 index options. We find that the option leverage pattern is similar to the theoretical result but the options are not redundant securities and in the nonlinear structure of option payoffs, the traders of KOSPI 200 index options price the systematic higher-moments and the negative volatility risk premium significantly affects delta-hedged gains, even after accounting for jump fears. But the empirical evidence on jump risk preference is less conclusive.

  • We examine a unified approach of calculating the closed form solutions of option price under stochastic volatility models using stochastic calculus and the Fourier inversion formula. In particular, we review and derive the option pricing formulas under Heston and correlated Stein-Stein models using a systematic and comprehensive approach which were derived individually earlier. We compare the empirical performances of the two stochastic volatility models and the Black-Scholes model in pricing KOSPI 200 index options.

  • This study investigated the information contents of KOSPI200 Options for intraday big market movement by using minute by minute data. The major findings are summarized as follows; First, big market movement occurred more frequently during 9:00~10:00 and 14:00~14:50. These phenomena reflect market unstability just after opening and near closing. Second, VKSOPI is most closely associated with extreme changes such as KOSPI200 jumps. Third, VKOSPI is showed more predictive power with negative KOSPI200 jumps than KOSPI200 jumps. Fourth, VKOSPI showed predictive power for the positive and negative jumps up to 30 minutes before the jumps occurs. The purpose of this study is to explore the most recent topics in the field of finance, research on market microstructure. This study is an important contribution to investigate intraday information comprehensively in terms of market microstructure effects using the 15-year long-term and the high-frequency data(minute by minute). The results of this study are expected to contribute to detect intraday true jumps, proactive development of market risk indicators, risk management, derivatives investment strategy.

  • Due to the success of Wealthfront, Betterment, etc., there is a growing interest in RoboAdvisor that is an automated asset allocation methodology globally. RoboAdvisor minimizes human involvement in managing assets, thereby reducing the costs of using services and eliminating human psychological factors. In this paper, we developed a predictive model for the KOSPI 200 Futures Index using deep learning, in order to replace the existing technical analysis technique. And the proposed model confirmed that When the KOSPI 200 Gift Index is small, it can be used to predict direction and price of index. In combination with the existing technical analysis, It is confirmed that the proposed models combining with existing technical analyses and can be applied to the RoboAdvisor Service in the future.

  • This paper tests cross hedging performance of the KOSPI 200 stock index futures to hedge the downside risk of the KOSPI, KOSPI 200 and KOSDAQ50 spot market. For this purpose we introduce the minimum variance hedge model, bivariate GARCH(1,1) and EGARCH(1,1) model as hedge models. The main results are as follows; First, we find that the direct hedge performance of KOSPI 200 index futures is better than those of indirect hedge performance. second, in case or cross hedge performance the hedge effect of KOSPI 200 stock index futures market against KOSPI 200 stock index spot market is relatively better than those of KOSPI 200 index futures against KOSPI and KOSDAQ spot position. Third, for the out-sample, hedging effectiveness of the risk-minimization with constant hedge ratios is higher than those of the time varying bivariate GARCH(1,1) and EGARCH(1,1) model. In conclusion, investors are encouraged to use simple risk-minimization model rather than the time varying hedge models like GARCH and EGARCH model to hedge the position of the Korean stock index cash markets.

  • Recently, there is a growing body of literature that suggests that information inefficiency is one of the causes of the asymmetric volatility. If this explanation for the asymmetric volatility is appropriate, then innovations, such as the introduction of futures, may be expected to impact the asymmetric volatility of stock market. As transaction costs and margin requirements in the futures market are lower than those in the spot market, new information is transmitted to futures prices more quickly and affects spot prices through arbitrage trading with spots. Also, the merit of the futures market may attract noise traders away from the spot market to the futures market. This study examines the impact of futures on the asymmetry of stock market volatility. If the asymmetric volatility is significant lower post-futures and exist in the futures market, it has validity that the asymmetric volatility is caused by information inefficiency in the spot market. The data examined are daily logarithmic returns on KOSPI 200 stock price index from January 4, 1993 to December 26, 2000. To examine the existence of the asymmetric volatility in the futures market, logarithmic returns on KOSPI 200 futures are used from May 4, 1996 to December 26, 2000. We used a conditional mode of TGARCH(threshold GARCH) of Glosten, Jagannathan and Runkel(1993). Pre-futures the spot market exhibits significant asymmetric responses of volatility to news and post-futures asymmetries are significantly lower, irrespective of bear market and bull market. The results suggest that the introduction of stock index futures has an effect on the asymmetric volatility of the spot market and are inconsistent with leverage being the sole explanation of asymmetry. However, it is found that the volatility of futures is not so asymmetric as expected.

  • When the margin level is set relatively low, margin violation probability increases and the default probability of the futures market rises. On the other hand, if the margin level is set high, the margin violation probability decreases, but the futures market becomes less attractive to hedgers as the investor's opportunity cost increases. In this paper, we investigate whether the movement of KOSPI200(Korea Composite Stock Price Index 200) futures daily prices can be modeled with the extreme value theory. Base on this investigation, we examine the validity of the margin level set by the extreme value theory. Computational results are presented to compare the extreme value distribution and the empirical distribution of margin violation in KOSPI200. Some observations and implications drawn from the computational experiment are also discussed.

  • In recent years, many attempts have been made to predict the behavior of bonds, currencies, stock or other economic markets. Most previous experiments used the neural network models for the stock market forecasting. The KOSPI 200 (Korea Composite Stock Price Index 200) is modeled by using different neural networks and fuzzy logic. In this paper, the neural network, the dynamic polynomial neural network (DPNN) and the fuzzy logic employed for the prediction of the KOSPI 200. The prediction results are compared by the root mean squared error (RMSE) and scatter plot, respectively. The results show that the performance of the fuzzy system is little bit worse than that of the DPNN but better than that of the neural network. We can develop the desired fuzzy system by optimization methods.

  • This paper examines the price discovery role of the KOSPI 200 futures index for its cash index. It was used the intrady data for KOSPI 200 and futures index from July 1998 to June 2001. The existing Preceding study for KOSPI 200 futures index was used the data of early market installation, but this study is distinguished to use a recent data accompanied with the great volume of transaction and various investors. We established three hypothesis to examine whether there is the price discovery role in the KOPSI 200 futures index and the characteristics of that. First, to examine whether the lead-lag relation is induced by the infrequent trading of component stocks, observations are sorted by the size of the trading volume of cash index. In a low trading volume, the long lead time is reported and the short lead time in a high volume. It is explained that the infrequent trading effect have an influence on the price discovery role. Second, to examine whether the lead-lag relation is different under bad news and good news, observations are sorted by the sign and size of cash index returns. In a bad news the long lead time is reported and the short lead time in a good news. This is explained by the restriction of"short selling" of the cash index Third, we compared estimates of the lead and lag relationships on the expiration day with those on days prior to expiration using a minute-to-minute data. The futures-to-spot lead time on the expiration day was at least as long as other days Prior to expiration, suggesting that "expiration day effects" did not demonstrate a temporal character substantially different form earlier days. Thus, while arbitrage activity may be presumed to be the greatest at expiration, such arbitrage transactions were not sufficiently strong or Pervasive to alter the empirical price relationship for the entire day. for the entire day.

  • In this paper, we consider a hedge portfolio based on futures of underlying asset. A classical way to estimate a hedge ratio for a hedge portfolio of a spot and futures is a regression analysis. However, a regression analysis is not capable of reflecting long-run equilibrium between a spot and futures and volatility clustering in the conditional variance of financial time series. In order to overcome such defects, we analyzed KOSPI200 index and futures using VECM-CC-GARCH model and computed a hedge ratio from the estimated conditional covariance-variance matrix. In real data analysis, we compared a regression and VECM-CC-GARCH models in terms of hedge effectiveness based on variance, value at risk and expected shortfall of log-returns of hedge portfolio. The empirical results show that the multivariate GARCH models significantly outperform a regression analysis and improve hedging effectiveness in the period of high volatility.
