  • Morton codes play important roles in many parallel GPU applications for the nearest neighbor (NN) search in huge data and queries with its applications growing. This paper discusses and analyzes the meaning of Tero Karras's 32-bit 'unsigned int' Morton code algorithm for three-dimensional spatial information in $[0,1]^3$ and its geometric implications. Based on this, this paper proposes 64-bit 'unsigned long long' version of Morton code and compares the results in both CPU vs. GPU and 32-bit vs. 64-bit versions. The proposed GPU algorithm runs around 1000 times faster than the CPU version.

  • This study focused on evaluating the reliability of code formulas such as those of the current Korean Building Code(KBC 1988). UBC 1997, NBCC 1995. and BSLJ 1994 for estimating the fundamental period of RC apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems, representative of typical residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, full-scale measurements were carried out on fifty RC apartment buildings, and these results were compared to those obtained by code formulas and also by dynamic analysis. Although these code formulas are based on the measured periods of buildings during various earthquakes and building period varies with the amplitude of structural deflection or strain level, ambient surveys should provide an effective tool for experimentally verifying the design period to the completed building. This comparison shows that comparatively large errors are likely to occure when the code formula of KBC 1988 is used, and all the other code formulas are not sufficient to estimate the fundamental period of apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems. An improved formula is proposed by regression analysis on the basis of the measured period data. The proposal is for the servicebility stress level, but it can also be applied for seismic code in the regions of low seismicity similar to Korea.

  • In holographic data storage (HDS), a high transmission rate is accomplished through the use of a charge coupled device array for reading two-dimensional (2D) pixel image data. Although HDS has many advantages in terms of storage capacity and data transmission rates, it also features problems, such as 2D intersymbol interference (ISI) by neighboring pixels and interpage interference (IPI) by multiple images stored in the same holographic volume. Modulation codes can be used to remove these problems. We introduce a 2D 8/9 error-correcting modulation code. The proposed modulation code exploits the trellis-coded modulation scheme, and the code rate is larger (about 0.889) than that of the conventional 6/8 balanced modulation code (an increase of approximately 13.9%). The performance of the bit error rate (BER) with the proposed scheme was improved compared with that of the 6/8 balanced modulation code and the simple 8/9 code without the trellis scheme.

  • In this study, direct code coupling, in which two codes share a single flow field, was conducted using 3-dimensional high resolution thermal hydraulics code, CUPID and 1-dimensional system analysis code, MARS. This approach provide the merit to use versatile capability of MARS for nuclear power plants and 3-dimensional T/H analysis capability of CUPID. Numerical Method to directly couple CUPID and MARS was described in this paper. The straight flow and manometer flow oscillation were calculated to verify conservation of coupled CUPID/MARS code in mass, momentum, and energy. This verification calculations indicates that the CUPID/MARS is coupled appropriately in numerical aspect and the coupled code can be applied to nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics after validation against integral transient experiments.

  • One drawback of polar codes is that they are not universal, that is, to achieve optimal performance, different polar codes are required for different kinds of channel. This paper proposes a polar code construction scheme for Nakagami-m fading channel. The scheme fully considers the characteristics of Nakagami-m fading channel, and uses the optimized Bhattacharyya parameter bounds. The constructed code is applied to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over Nakagami-m fading channel to prove the performance of polar code. Simulation result shows the proposed codes can get excellent bit error rate (BER) performance with successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding. For example, the designed polar code with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided SCL (L = 8) decoding achieves 1.1dB of gain over LDPC at average BER about 10-5 under 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4QAM) while the code length is 1024, rate is 0.5.

  • We previously proposed an Orthogonal Code Hopping Multiplexing (OCHM) scheme for statistical multiplexing on a synchronous downlink. OCHM enables a large number of users to share a limited number of code channels through statistical multiplexing. We here improve the performance of OCHM by prioritizing encoded symbols according to their importance using both the conventional code division and the previously proposed code hopping multiplexing schemes. Prioritization is useful for channel coding schemes with different levels of importance for encoded symbols such as turbo-codes. Scheme performance is evaluated by simulation in terms of the required Eb/N0 for a 1% block error rate.

  • Conventional bar code has the appearance of line bars and spaces, called as one-dimensional bar code. In contrast, the information in two-dimensional bar code is represented by either a small, rectangular or square with the types of mosaic and Braille. The two-dimensional bar code is much more efficient than one-dimensional bar code because it can allow to store and express large amounts of data in a small space and so far there is also a little information about decoding the Data Matrix in base 256 mode. According to the ISO international standards, there are four kinds of bar code: QR code, Data Matrix, PDF417, and Maxi code. In this paper, among them, we focus on describing the basic concepts of Data Matrix in base 256 mode, how to encode and decode them, and how to organize them in detail. In addition, Data Matrix can be organized efficiently depending on the modes of numeric, alphanumeric characters, and binary system and expecially, we focus on describing how to decode the Data Matrix code by four modes.

  • The Line Code is a code used for data transmission and is a coding method used to prevent loss of data between transmitter and receiver. There are various kinds of line code such as B3ZS, HDB3, B8ZS, and HDB3 code is used in the tactical communication networks of Korea. In this paper, we implement the HDB3 Codec that is used in tactical communication networks in order to eliminate the risk factors for component discontinuance and to shorten development period and ensure reliability. Also it is confirmed that it can be implement by minimizing the amount of logic usage so that it can be used unrestrictedly in systems using FPGA and the implemented HDB3 Codec is simulated to confirm that it is equivalent to the performance of HDB3 Codec IC.
