Analysis of Generation and Amplification Mechanism of Abnormal Waves Occurred along the West Coast of Korea (서해안 이상파랑의 발생 및 증폭 기구 분석)

  • On 31 March 2007, the abnormal wave occurred along the western coast of Korea. In order to investigate the generation mechanism of abnormal waves and to understand the amplification process of the abnormal waves, the observed data were analyzed and one-dimensional numerical model experiments were performed by using both the linear shallow water equation and the linear Boussinesq equation models. Various types of pressure jump for the abnormal waves previously proposed by other researchers were reviewed. As a result, it was not possible to reproduce the abnormal waves from the previously proposed pressure jumps. In this study, we proposed a new form of pressure jump, and numerical simulations were performed in order to check the validity of the proposed pressure jump. The numerical results showed that the calculated period of abnormal waves and the maximum water elevations agreed reasonably well with those of the observations.

Classification of Riparian Riffles and Their Physical and Hydraulic Characteristics (하천 여울의 분류 및 물리, 수리학적 특성 분석)

  • This study performed the systematic classification of the various types of riffles and analyzed their physical and hydraulic characteristics at the Hongcheon River and Seomjin River. The riffles are classified into the long type and the wide type by their ratio of length and width, and also classified into the convergent type and the divergent type by their width change along flow direction. They are also classified into the falling type, the running type, the undular wave and the undular jump by their surface profiles. The falling type and the running type usually occur near the cobbles with multiple diameters, whereas the undular wave and the undular jump occur near the small pebbles. They showed the upward convex type at the middle part, and the slope gets bigger at the downstream part.

  • Results of theoretical investigations of the stability characteristics of an actively controlled externally pressurized air journal bearing are presented. Proportional control and derivative control are used for the control algorithm of active air bearing. The stability characteristics of the actively controlled bearing operating at zero steady-state eccentricity is investigated with the step jump method. The speed at onset of instability is raised for both proportional control and derivative control of bearing. Proportional control increased the stability threshold without affecting the whirl ratio. But for derivative control of bearing, stability threshold increase is accompanied by a parallel reduction of the whirl ratio. Results show active control of bearing can be adopted for the stability improvement of air journal bearing.

Noise Elimination of Speckle Fringe Phasemap (반점 간섭무늬 위상단면도의 잡음제거)

  • The combination of both phase-shifting convolution and 2-bit quantization smoothing filter was used to reduce speckle noise from saw-tooth speckle fringes phase map, obtained in phase-shifting speckle interferometer. The phase-shifting convolution showed the noise reduction capability of speckle fringe without destroying edge information across 271 jump. Also, it was shown that the 2-bit quantization smoothing filter was superior to average, low-pass filter and median filter in speeding up smoothing process and enhancing SIN ratio. Finally, a path dependent unwrapping algorithm was used to unwrap a noise reduced 271 modulo speckle phasemap. semap.

  • A numerical analysis is carried out in order to obtain aerodynamic data of the ski jump. The body modelling of Korean people is used in the numerical simulation and the result is validated by comparing it with the wind tunnel experiment. A flying posture, which provides the maximum lift-to-drag ratio, is found by analyzing the aerodynamic coefficients of various flight conditions. The result of the present study can be applied to fixing the postures of Korean ski players and is expected to advance the national sports science.

  • In this paper, we performed the improvement study for the dynamic characteristics enhancement of the motor stator coil vertical winding machine. The dynamic characteristics improvement was done by means of the optimized design and the weight reduction of the flyer configuration, modified design of the servo control system for the flyer and the former actuation, and the development of jump timing digital circuit for the reduction of former jumping error. As the results, the maximum winding speed pattern of the developed machine was attained up to 3000rpm and also reduced the jumping error. In conclusion, domestic design technology for manufacturing the motor coil vertical winding machine was established through this study.

  • The nonlinear response statistics of an spring-pendulum system with internal resonance under narrow band random excitation is investigated analytically- The center frequency of the filtered excitation is selected to be close to natural frequency of directly excited spring mode. The Fokker-Planck equations is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the dynamic moment of response coordinates. By means of the Gaussian closure method the dynamic moment equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. The nonlinear phenomena, such as jump and multiple solutions, under narrow band random excitation were found by Gaussian closure method.

  • Flash evaporation phenomenon is affected by temperature, pressure and water level in the open chamber and Baffle etc. In this study, PIV experiments were conducted to ensured the flow Characteristics in the open chamber, and optimum baffle location and baffle height. Baffle had a considerable effect on the recirculation flow, hydraulic jump and the flow characteristics in the Open chamber, and influence of Reynolds number was insignificant. The optimum baffle height was about h/H=1.5. and optimum baffle location was x/H=1.5 from the inlet of open chamber.

Performance Analysis of a Dynamic Priority Control Scheme for Delay-Sensitive Traffic (음성 트래픽을 위한 동적우선권제어방식의 성능분석)

  • This paper considers the performance of a dynamic priority control function (DPCF) of a threshold-based Bernoulli priority jump (TBPJ) scheme. Loss-sensitive and delay-sensitive traffics are applied to a system with a TBPJ scheme that is a general state-dependent Bernoulli scheduling scheme. Loss-sensitive and delay-sensitive traffics represent sound and data, respectively. Under the TBPJ scheme, the first packet of the loss-sensitive traffic buffer goes into the delay-sensitive traffic buffer with Bernoulli probability p according to system states which represent the buffer thresholds and the number of packets waiting for scheduling. Performance analysis shows that TBPJ scheme obtains large performance build-up for the delay-sensitive traffic without performance degradation for the loss-sensitive traffic. TBPJ scheme shows also better performance than that of HOL scheme.

A Comparative Study on Hydraulic Jump and Specific Energy Losses at Downstream According to the Weir Discharge Types (보 유출형태에 따른 하류부 도수 및 비에너지 손실에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The weirs built so far are mainly overflow type weirs overflowing to the upstream. Main advantages of overflow type weirs are, effective water resources management and easy design, construction and maintenance due to many accumulated studies. However, due to the special feature of the overflow type weir where water overflows through the upstream of the weir, the silt coming from the upstream is not discharged to the downstream of the weir. This increases the river bed and reduces the reservoir capacity, and as a result, the weir loses its function. A underflow type weir with a water gate has been implemented in order to solve such sediment deposit and weir maintenance problems. However due to the design problem of recently constructed underflow type weirs, the river bed of the downstream of a weir has been scoured. And this leds to a structural problem. In this study, the flow characteristics of overflow type weirs and underflow type weir, hydraulic jump length analysis depending on change of water depth and the amount of specific energy loss generated per unit length depending on a weir type have been compared and analyzed, for the effective design and management of the weirs. The experiment results show that, when identical upstream conditions of underflow type weir and an overflow type weir were maintained, the hydraulic jump length was up to twice longer with Fr(Froude number) 3.5 of the hydraulic jump length at the underflow type weir, and the hydraulic jump length gradually decreased as the downstream water depth increased. The comparative analysis result of the amount of specific energy loss generated per unit length showed that the amount of energy loss per unit length was twice higher for an overlfow type weir than a underflow type weir. Therefore, in case of a underflow type facility, an additional energy reduction facility is determined to be necessary for safety of water construction structures.
