  • In this case study, we investigated the characteristics of pre-service secondary science teachers' curriculum design for teaching in science museums. Three pre-service secondary science teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated in this study. We have observed and recorded their teaching practices in science museums, collected all of their teaching materials, and conducted semi-structured interviews before and after teaching. All the data collected were analyzed by using the constant comparative method. The analyses of results revealed that the pre-service teachers structured their teaching in a series of pre-visit, during-visit, and post-visit as continuous activities. They attempted to reinforce students' learning experiences during the visit by providing post-visit activities, and also properly considered the principle that activity should be personally meaningful or relevant to students. However, they lacked the perceptions as well as the practical knowledge of reducing student's novelty of the science museum by providing activities prior to the visit, encouraging to engage in joint productive activities, promoting diverse social interactions, and providing students with choices and controls on their learning. On the bases of these results, we made some suggestions in pre-service teacher education for the professional development of teaching in science museum.

  • The WTO/DDA Negotiation on the Fisheries Subsidies started by DDA(Doha Development Agenda : 2001.11)at early 2002 has been held about 20 times until the fist half of 2005. The Negotiation will be terminated until the end of 2005 but now, it is impossible to predict the exact conclusion of the Negotiation. There is a sharp conflict of opinion on the WTO/DDA Negotiation on the Fisheries Subsidies between FFG(Fish Friends Groups : USA, New Zealand etc) and Anti-FFG(Rep. Korea, Japan etc). The Fisheries Subsidies is regulated by the WTO/DDA Negotiation that regulates on the subsidies of industrial products, fisheries products, forest products. Considering the progress of the WTO/DDA Negotiation on the Fisheries Subsidies, Guidelines for the Fisheries Subsidies Negotiation were established in Doha Ministerial Declaration at 2001 and a necessity of a special regulation on the Fisheries Subsidies has been discussed from 2002 to 2004. After june, 2004, the Negotiation was proceeding as Rep. Korea, Japan and Taiwan agreed with discussing a special regulation on the Fisheries Subsidies and At 1st, August, 2004, they reached an agreement on a necessity of a special regulation on the Fisheries Subsidies. At Feb, 2005, discussion was suspended because of presenting the joint proposal from 3 countries(Rep. Korea, Japan and Taiwan) and now discussion on the Fisheries Subsidies is giving the first consideration to classification of prohibited/non-actionable subsidies, S&D of a developing countries, small fisheries, problems of farming, grace period etc. From now on, Considering the 18th~the 20th negotiations, it is expected that discussion of fisheries subsidies regulation including property and range of prohibited/non-actionable subsidies, S&D of a developing countries, a definition of small fisheries is accelerated. In this point of view, this paper analyzed and arranged every country's proposals holding our own position and took a survey to fishermen and fisheries experts about prohibited/non-actionable subsidies. In addition, this paper intends to suggest the way of future-negotiation and provides essential data to help government's policy making through analyzing prohibited/ non-actionable subsidies, farming subsidies, S&D of a developing countries, small scale fisheries.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the maspin gene expression from osteosarcoma and to determine whether its expression correlates with clinical course of the cancer. Materials and Methods: Between 2001 and 2006, 39 patients who were diagnosed and treated surgically for osteosarcoma were included in the present study. We estimated the maspin gene expression from osteosarcoma tissue samples using RT-PCR. And we examined the correlations between the maspin expression and clinical data (post-chemotherapeutic response, local relapse or metastases). Results: Maspin was over expressed in 21 cases of 39 osteosarcoma tissues. There were significant correlations between maspin expression and the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, distant metastases & metastasis-free survival. In multivariate analysis, maspin low-expression was significant risk factor for distant metastases. Also, there was significant difference in metastasis-free survivals between maspin hi- expression group ($69.0{\pm}10.5%$) and low-expression group ($25.4{\pm}13.0%$). Conclusion: The degree of maspin expression in osteosarcoma was significant risk factor for distant metastases and predictive factor for metastasis-free of overall survivals. Maspin may be a useful biologic marker in evaluating the prognosis in patients with osteosarcoma and could be used as a therapeutic target clinically.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to assess TLE1 as a target molecule of synovial sarcoma. Method: We obtained tissue samples and clinical data from 36 patients who were diagnosed and treated for synovial sarcoma in our hospital. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to detect the expression of TLE1 in synovial sarcoma and normal tissues such as fat, skeletal muscle, peripheral nerve, vascular endothelium, and epithelium. Univariate survival analysis was performed to find whether overexpression of TLE1 is correlated to poor prognosis. Results: TLE1 was expressed in 35 (97%) cases (grade 1 was 5 cases, grade 2 was 28 cases, grade 3 was 2 cases.). Normal tissues from mesenchymal origin did not express TLE1. However, epithelial and endothelial cells showed weak expression (grade 1) of TLE1. The level of TLE1 expression did not have any prognostic significance according to univariate survival analysis. Conclusion: TLE1 may be a new molecular target of synovial sarcoma that differentiates synovial sarcoma from normal mesenchymal cells.

  • Purpose : Kabuki syndrome is a multiple congenital malformation syndrome with mental retardation. It was named after its characteristic appearance, a face resembling that of an actor in a Kabuki play. To date, six Korean cases of Kabuki syndrome have ever been reported. Here, we present the phenotypic and genetic characteristics of six patients with Kabuki syndrome. Materials and Methods : Between 2003 and 2009, six Korean girls have been diagnosed and followed up as Kabuki syndrome at Center for Genetic Diseases of Ajou University Hospital. Their clinical and laboratory data were collected and analyzed by the retrospective review of medical records. Results : All six patients showed the characteristic facial dysmorphism and developmental delay. Persistent fingertip pads were also found in all patients. Most patients showed postnatal growth retardation (83.3%) and hypotonia (83.3%). Opthalmologic problems were common, particularly for strabismus (83.3%). Congenital heart defects were present in three patients (50%). Skeletal abnormalities including 5th finger shortening (83.3%), clinodactyly (50%), joint hypermobility (50%) and hip dislocation (16.7%) were also observed. There was no patient who had positive family history for Kabuki syndrome. Cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic analyses including karyotyping and array CGH could not reveal any underlying genetic cause of Kabuki syndrome. Conclusion : Korean patients with Kabuki syndrome showed a broad spectrum of clinical features affecting multiple organ systems. Although clinical manifestations of Kabuki syndrome have been well established, our results failed to detect recurrent chromosome aberrations which could cause Kabuki syndrome. Its natural history and genetic background remains to be further studied for providing appropriate management and genetic counseling.

  • When we evaluate slope stability, we regard the slope homogeneous and evaluate slope stability at the most dangerous portion of slope. However, since conditions and properties of rock mass/soil are different from one location to another within a single slope, slope stability evaluated by current concept can not represent slope correctly. This also result in over-reinforcement at the portion where reinforcement is not necessary. In order to solve these problems, we suggest a cell unit evaluation method in which we apply small rectangular cells in a slope and regard each cell as a single slope. In this method, slopes are classified into soil slope and rock slope depending on materials. Strength of rock, volumetric joint count, spacing of joints, condition of joints, ground water condition and so on are examined and SMR and condition index values are calculated. Finally, all data and results are presented as contour maps. We apply the cell unit evaluation method into 3 cut slopes. SMR values estimated by the new method are larger than those by current concept at most portions of slope, indicating that the new method suggested by this research represent slope stability more correctly than methods which were used. This method will prevent over-reinforcement at the portion of slope where reinforcement is not necessary.

  • To determine nitrogen balance (Input-Output) of Korea that was asked by Joint Working Party of the Committee for Agriculture and the Environment Policy Committee, OECD, nitrogen input and output were separately investigated as followings: nitrogen input included the amounts of chemical fertilizer consumption, cattle manure production, and biological nitrogen fixation in the national scale, and nitrogen output summed amounts withdrawn by crop and pasture harvesting, and crop residue removal, and lost by denitrification. In 1997, nitrogen balance of Korea was $158kg\;ha^{-1}$ and $211kg\;ha^{-1}$ on including and excluding denitrification loss, respectively. N balance excluded N loss by denitrification and N withdrawal by crop residues on nitrogen output was $250kg\;ha^{-1}$, which OECD asked to except two items from N balance determination because participants were not enough their data. Nitrogen balance was increased to 1.7~2.3 times in 1997 compared with 70 and $162kg\;ha^{-1}$ in 1985, which calculated on the condition of including denitrification and excluding denitrification and removal of crop residues in nitrogen output, respectively. This increase was caused mainly by increasing livestock manure production and chemical fertilizer consumption together with agricultural land area decrease. Nitrogen input was composed with 59% of chemical fertilizer. 42% of cattle manure and 5% of others in 1997, and output was with 73% of crop production, 23% of crop residue withdrawal and 4% of pasture production. Average nitrogen balance excluded N loss by denitrification and N withdrawals by crop residues in 1995~1997 calculated by OECD was $253kg\;ha^{-1}$, which was the second highest rank in OECD participants following $262kg\;ha^{-1}$ of Netherlands. Japanese N balance that has similar farming system with us was $135kg\;ha^{-1}$.

  • Using a generalized translog multiproduct cost function model, this paper examines economies of scale and scope in the vertically-integrated Korean railway industry. The paper then conceptualizes that the Korea National Railroad (KNR) produces four outputs (passenger-kilometers, ton-kilometers of freight, average length of passenger trips, and average length of freight haul) using three input factors(labor, fuel and maintenance, and rolling stock and capital). Using time series data collected from the KNR's annual records for the years from 1977 to 2002, the simultaneous equation system consisting of a cost function and two input share equatins is estimated with the Zellner's iterative seemingly unrelated regression. The findings show that the cost function corresponding to a non-Cobb-Douglas, non-homothetic, and non-homogeneous production technology adequately represents the KNR's cost structure. On the other hand, the Korean railway industry experiences sizeable overall scale economies, which result from substantial product-specific scale economies associated with passenger-kilometers and freight ton-kilometers and from scope economies associated with their joint production. In addition, the magnitude of economies of scope is influenced largely by the ratio of passenger trips, and has increased over time as the former has increased while the latter has decreased.

  • Owing to the rapid growth of hypermarket/discount store formats since 1996, Korean retailing has suddenly attracted the significant attention from researchers. Before the emergence of large scale retailers such as E-Mart, Lotte Mart and Tesco Korea, there were the two retail formats who led the Korean retailing in the modern retailing history: department store and supermarket formats. Nevertheless, there has been little literature concerned about the two retail formats as a case study, while some authors have paid their attention to hypermarket/discount store formats. In addition, when mentioning the development process of retailing history, it is less likely that authors have made an effort to illustrate supermarket retailing history. In order to regard supermarket retailing as part of the Korean retailing, it is interesting to look at a representative supermarket retailer, Haitai, who was one of the subsidiaries of Haitai chaebol. Based on supermarket retailing, the company which was established as a joint venture in 1974 led a supermarket retailing in the Korean modernised retailing history. Before analysing whether Haitai failed or not, the definition of failure should be illustrated. With regard to the term, failure, in the academic world, authors have interchangeably used the following terms: failure, divestment, closure, organisational restructuring, and exit. To collect research data as a case study, the author adopted an in-depth interview method. The research is based on research interviews with 13 ex-staff who left after Haitai went bankruptcy, from store management department to merchandise department. By investigating Haitai's experiences through field interviews, the research found that Haitai restructured organisational decision-making process at the early stage when companies started to modernise organisational charts, benchmarking sophisticated retailing knowledge through the strategic alliance with a Japanese retailer. In respect of buying system, the company established firmly buying functions by adopting central buying system, and further, outstandingly allocated considerable marketing resources to the development of retailer brands with the dedicated team of retailer brand development. In the grocery retailing, abandoning a 'no-frill' packaging concept, the introduction of retailer brand packaging equal to, or better than national brand packaging design, encouraged other retailers to change their retailer brand development strategies. In product sourcing ways, Haitai organised for the first time the overseas sourcing team with the aim of improving the profit margins of foreign products and providing exotic products for customers, followed by other retailers. Regarding distribution system, the company introduced the innovative idea which delivered products ordered by stores directly to each store withboth its own vehicles and its own warehouse in which could deal with dry foods, chilly foods, frozen food, and non-foods, and even, process produce. In addition, Haitai developed many promotional methods to attract more customers like 'the guarantee of the lowest price', and expanded its own business to US in 1996, although withdrew, because of bankruptcy in 1997. Together with POS introduction in 1994, Haitai made a significant contribution to the development of the Korean retailing, influencing other retailers in many aspects. As a case study, the study has provided a number of lessons from Haitai's experiences for academicians and practitioners, suggesting that its history should be involved in the Korean modernised retailing.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a bedside nursing shift report protocol and evaluate the effect of the protocol in a tertiary hospital in South Korea. Methods: The bedside nursing handoff protocol with patient engagement was developed based on the literature review and the validation of an expert group. The effect of the protocol on clinical implication was tested in three medical-surgical units in a tertiary hospital. Outcomes were assessed by patient perception, nurse perception, and reporting time. Data collected from June to August in 2018 and analyzed with descriptive statistics and One-way ANOVA using SPSS version 25.0. Results: The bedside nursing shift report protocol with patient engagement consisted of two steps: nurse to nurse report and bedside report with patients. Nurse's perception with patient engagement was significantly increased after applying protocol (F=17.85, p<.001). Patient's perception was significantly improved in the areas of discharge plan (F=7.86, p<.001), health information privacy (F=4.46, p=.012) and identify attending nurse (F=3.19, p=.042). There were no differences in reporting time between the bedside nursing shift report and a traditional shift report (F=0.61, p=.054). Conclusion: Patient perception was significantly increased, while nurse perception was not different after applying this protocol. For the change in the perception of nurses, education may be preceded to improve nurses' competence for the bedside shift report. Furthermore, the support in enough nurse staffing should be needed for encouraging the bedside shift report. The bedside shift report may enhance patient engagement. Therefore it may improve patient safety and health outcome in clinics.
