To elucidate ecophysiological factors affecting nutural distribution of evergreen broad-leabed trees in Danohad National Marine Park, water potential, relative water content and photosynthetic activities of 4 species, Cammellia japonica, Machilus thunbergii, Castanopsis cuspidata var.sieboldii and Quercus acuta, were potential began to decrease from 07:00h to its minimum value at 13:00h for C. cuspidata var. sieboldii (-14.3bar) and Q. acuta (-19.4bar) at 16:00 h for M. thunbergii(-17.0bar) and at 19:00 h for C. japonica (-14.5bar), and these showed similar trends to relative water content. Photosynthetic activities of 4 species began to increase from 7:00 h and reached maximum values before their minimum values of water potential occureed. Optimum temperature renges of photosynthetic activities was $18~20^{\circ}C$ for C. japonica - M. thunbergii and $14~16^{\circ}C$ for C. cuspidata var. sieboldii Quercus acuta.Q.acuta had the highest light saturation point of $0.4mM/m^2/s$ and C. japonica the lowest of $0.15mM/m^2/s$. Water potential of 4 species subjected to water stress, began to decrease after 1st day of drought and after 21th day of drought, those of C. japonica, M. thunbergii, C. cuspidata var. sieboldii and Q. acuta decreased to species began to decrease after 7th day of drought and after 21th day, those of M. thunbergii, C. cuspidata var. sieboldii and Q. acuta were dropped to about 50% and C. japonica 83.5%. Photosynthetic activity of 4 specie began to decline in the order of C. cuspidata var. sieboldii, Q.acuta, C. japonica and M. thunbergii after 10th day of drought. These results suggest that the segregated disributions of C. japonica - M. thunbergii on vally positions and C. cuspidata var. sieboldii - Q. acuta on slopes were associated with different responses of water status and photosyntheties to their environment.
To find out the mineral cycles of calcium, magnesium and sodium in dynamic grassland cosystems in a steady state condition, this investigation was conducted along the northwest side on Mt. Kwanak. The experimental results may he suromarized on the communities of a Zoysia japonica and a Miscanthus sinesis as follows. As compared with some properties of the surface soils among two semi-natural grasslands, cal- cium (Ca) was greater quantity in a Zoysia japonica, whereas, in a Miscanthus sicensis, sodium (Na)and magnesium (Mg) were greater in Mt. Kwanak. For the case of steady production and release, the ratio of annual mineral production to the amount accumulated on the top of mineral soil in a steady state provides the estimates of release constant k. The release constants of Ca, Mg and Na of the litter were 0.42, 0.25 and 0.29 in the Zoysia japonica grassland, and were 0.41, 0.54 arid 0.62 in the Miscanthus sinensis grassland, respect- ively. The half times of Ca, Mg and Na required for the release or accumulation of the litter on the grassland were 1.65, 2.77 and 2.39 in the Zoysia japonica, and were 1.69, 1.28 and 1.12 in the Miscauthus sinensis, respectively. The increasing order of the turnover parameters of the elements was Ca, Na and Mg in the Zoysia japonica grassland, and was Na, Mg and Ca in the Miscanthus Si nens is grassland. The amounts of annual cycles for Ca, Mg, Na in the grassland ecosystem under the steady-state conditions were 1.29, 0.20 and 0.12 g /m$^2$ in the Zoysia japonica grassland and 3.91, 1.04 and 0.61 g /m$^2$ in the Miscanthus sinensis grassland.
Fifteen populations comprising three taxa and a putative hybrid of Fallopia sect. Reynoutria in Korea were examined for their leaf flavonoid constituents. Nineteen flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified; they were glycosylated derivatives of the flavonols quercetin and kaempferol, and of the flavones apigenin and luteolin. Among them, quercetin 3-O-galactoside and quercetin 3-O-glucoside were major flavonoid constituents, and present in all taxa. The flavonoid data appear to be very useful for taxon delimitation, and all taxa examined are readily distinguished by their flavonoid profiles. In addition, the flavonoid data suggest that the Nonsan population may be of hybrid origin involving F. japonica var. japonica, F. forbesii, and F. sachalinensis. In F. japonica var. japonica, there is no apparent correlation between their levels of polyploidy and flavonoid chemistry, but geographical variation of the flavonoid profiles among some populations was detected.

This study was conducted to determine the content of atractylenolides I and III in Atractylodes japonica. An established HPLC-DAD method was used to monitor contents of atractylenolides I and III in A. japonica obtained from Korea and China and compared with contents of A. macrocephala, A. chinensis, and A. lancea. Quantitative analysis of atractylenolides I and III was carried out on a Shiseido C18 column (S-5 ${\mu}m$, 4.6 mm I.D. ${\times}$ 250 mm) with gradient elution composed of acetonitile-water. The results show that the average content of atractylenolides I and III in A. japonica were 0.0954 and 0.1963%, respectively, and contents of A. lancea were higher than A. macrocephala, A. chinensis. In this study, we identified the differentiation of the quality of A. japonica from different species and collected locations and established content standard of atractylenolides I and III in A. japonica and this content standard was helpful to quality control of A. japonica.
This study was aimed at investigating hepatic toxicity and immunomodulating effects of defatted methanol extracts of two kinds of medicinal plants, Rubus coreanus Miq. and Atractylodes japonica Koidz. in mice. Defatted methanol extracts of fruits of Rubus coreanus Miq. and rhizome of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. were added at the level of 0.5% or 5%(w/w) to cholesterol-supplemented AIN-76 diet. Each diet was fed to 8 ICR male mice for 30 days. Weight gain and food efficiency ratio of the mice fed 5.0% extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. were significantly lower than those of the mice fed 0.5% extract Relative liver weight and activity of plasma alanine aminotransfernse were significantly increased only in the mice fed 5% extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. compared with the others. Splenocyte proliferation was not significantly different between the groups fed 0.5% or 5.0% extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. However, splenocyte proliferation was significantly decreased in the mice fed 5.0% extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. compared with that in the mice fed 0.5% Production of interleukin-2 by splenocytes from the mice fed 0.5% extract of Atractylodes japonica Miq. was significantly higher than the control value and it became lower with 5.0% dietary level. Secretion of $interferon-\gamma$ was not significantly different among groups. In conclusion, the defatted methanol extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. was likely to exert immunomodulating effect at the level of 0.5% but it may exert adverse effects on immune and liver functions at the level of 5.0%.
This study was carried out to compare chromosomal characteristics between Atractylodes japonica and A macrocephala. Cytogenetic analysis was conducted based on karyotype analysis and physical mapping using fluorescence in situ hybridization. As a result of karyotype analysis by feulgen staining, somatic chromosome numbers of A. japonica and A. macrocephala were 2n=24. The length. of the mitotic metaphase chromosomes of A. japonica ranged from $0.70\;to\;1.60{\mu}m$ with a total length. of $12.11{\mu}m$ and the homologous chromosome complement comprised six metacentrics, five submetacentrics and one subtelocentrics. On the other hand, the length of the mitotic metaphase chromosomes of A. macrocephala ranged from $0.90\;to\;2.35{\mu}m$ with a total length of $16.58{\mu}m$ and the homologous chromosome complement comprised seven metacentrics and five submetacentrics. The total length of A. japonica chromosomes was shorter than that of A. macrocephala, but A. japonica had one subtelocentrics (chromosomes 4) different from A. macrocepha1a. chromosomes. The F1SH technique using 17S and 5S rDNA was applied to metaphase chromosomes. The signals for 17S rDNA were detected on the telomeric regions of chromosomes 4 and 5 in both A japonica and A. macrocephala. The 5S rDNA signal was found in the short arm of chromosome 1.

A limited number of studies have been conducted on the bioactivity of Callophyllis japonica (C. japonica), which is a red seaweed that is traditional in the oriental diet. In this report, the hepatoprotective effect of C. japonica was studied in a carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_4)-induced$ hepatotoxicity model in rats. A single intraperitoneal injection of 1.25 ml/kg of 20% $CCl_4$ in olive oil produced an elevated level of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and increased enzyme activity of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT). Pre-treatment with C. japonica (150 mg/kg/d) for 3 days in $CCl_4-injected$ rats reduced the levels of SGPT and SGOT compared with control levels (P < 0.05), while higher doses (300 and 600 mg/kg) were ineffective. The administration of C. japonica (150 mg/kg/d) for 3 days after the $CCl_4$ injection in rats was ineffective at reducing SGPT and SGOT. The histopathological findings in each group largely agreed with the biochemical data. The results of this study support the suggestion that C. japonica has a hepatoprotective effect on chemical-induced liver injury.

We examined the dyeability and antimicrobial activity of silks dyed singly with Sophora japonica L., Curcuma longa L., combination-dyed with Polygonum tinctorium L. and Sophora japonica L., and with Polygonum tinctorium L. and Curcuma longa L.. The color of silk dyed singly with Sophora japonica L., Curcuma longa L. was Yellow with Hue of 5.0Y and 0.6Y, respectively. Two types of combination-dyed silk were Blue Green with 2.6BG and 1.5BG, respectively. In the case of dry Cleaning fastness and rub fastness, all four types of dyed silk was good, achieving grade 4~5. The antimicrobial activity of Staphylococcus aureus of silk dyed with Sophora japonica L. extract showed excellent antibacterial activity of 99.5% and the other three types of dyed silk of 99.9%. In addition, in antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia, silk dyed with Sophora japonica L. extract showed 99.6%, and the other three types of dyed silk exhibited excellent antibacterial properties of 99.9%.
To elucidate the mineral cycles of potassium in a dynamic grassland ecosystem in a steady state condition, this investigation was cunducted along the northwest side on Mt. Kwanak. The exper-imental results may he summarized on communities of Z. japonica and M. sinensis as follows. As compared with some pronerties of the surface soils among two semi-natural grasslands, the levels of exchangeahle potassium were high in M. sinensis and low in Z. japonica. Contents of potassium for the litters of Z. japonica and M. sinensis were 1.69% and 2.51%, re-spectively. The annual production of potassium was 1.32 g /m$m^2$ in the Z. japonica grassland and 3. 08 g /m$m^2$in the M. sinensis grassland. For a case of steady production and release, the ratio of annual min- eral production to the amount accumulated on top of the mineral soil in a steady state provides estimates of the release constant k. The models of the release, accumulation and annual cycle of potassium in a grassland ecosystem are determined by the equation (1) to (3), respectively (Table 3). Since it requires a period of about each 0.693 /r, 3 /r and 5 /r years for the release and accumu-lation of 50, 95 and 99% of its steady-state level, the estimates for potassium in a dynamic grass-land ecosystem of Mt. Kwanak were 1.5, 6.6 and 11.0 years in the Z. japonica grassland, and were 2.7, 11.9 and 19.8 years in the M. sinensis grassland. The amounts of annual cycles for potassium in a grassland ecosystem under the steady-state conditions were 1.32 g /m$^2$ in the Z. japonica grassland and 3.08 g /$m^2$ in the M. sinensis grassland. Key words : ZQvsia japonica Ahscanthus sinensis, Mt. Kwanak, Potassium cycles.
In this study, the amount of seedlings and seed dispersal of evergreen broad-leaved trees in forest community adjacent to Camellia japonica forest were studied to provide basic information for effective management of evergreen broad-leaved forest. Evergreen broad-leaved trees including C. japonica, Neolitsea sericea, Machilus thunbergii, Ligustrum japonicum, Cinnamomum japonicum, Litsea japonica, Pittosporum tobira showed high density and ratio of seedlings in community adjacent to C. japonica forest. Although individual densities of N. sericea, M. thunbergii, L. japonicum were low, their seedlings were distributed up to Pinus thunbergii and coniferous broad-leaved forest at a distance of 100m and 200m from C. japonica forest. Distribution of DBH class of C. japonica suggested a continuous spread from higher frequency of young individuals, N. sericea, M. thunbergii and L. japonicum did not showed an obvious trend. Seed of C. japonica mainly dispersed within 50m from mother tree.
