  • This paper presents the ground behaviour of shield TBM lunching area during excavation. In order to perform this study, a scaled model test was carried out in the 1/45 scale for a field tunnel in practice where the tunnel had about 7.8 m diameter at Seoul Metro Line 9 construction site. The test to simulate earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunnelling at the lunching area was conducted with the developed small scaled shield TBM machine. Measurements were performed during simulation of excavation for total jacking thrust force, ground displacements and pressures. Based on the analysis of simulation results, the stability of ground was verified and evaluated. In particular, the suitable reinforcement range and methods are also suggested. In addition, these results are useful for engineers and technicians to select suitable and serviceable machine operation parameters and reduce environmental influence at all stages of tunnel construction.

  • The program which could determine cross-sectional dimension of the prestressed concrete box girder bridges at the stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the full staging method. Objective cost function consisted of six independent variables such as height of cross-section, jacking force and thickness of web and bottom flange. The SUMT(Sequntial Unconstrained minimization Technique) was used to solve the constrained nonlinear minimization optimal problem. Using the program developed in this study, optimum design was performed for existing bridges with one cell cross section of constant depth. The result verify the compatibility of the program.

  • Structural tests of the PSC Beam bridge using high strength concrete, concrete compressive strength 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, are conducted for the application including durability and serviceability of the bridge. Current design safety factors with respect to the jacking force and the service design load DB-24 are applied to the design of the bridge. Concrete compressive strength 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, girder depth 2.3m, girder space 3.2m, span length 20m, and slab thickness 27cm are selected for the bridge test. The Bulb-Tee section of the girders is applied instead of I section because it is well known more stable to the longer span(40m). Static load test(4 beams) with composite and non-composite section, and fatigue load test(1 beams) with composite section are conducted. Crack moment, ultimate load, deflections with load steps, and strains of the beam section for those bridges are investigated. The structural test results of the bridges showed a good performance for a safety and a serviceability.

  • The analysis method of stabilizing process and its program regarding large spatial structural systems are described in this paper. In this paper, the analysis of stabilizing process of the example structures, namely Olympic Fencing Arena, is performed and the jacking force of stabilizing process is proposed, and the characteristics of structural behavior is investigated. This result of research is applied to the design and construction of the actual structures and the reliability of the analysis is verified through comparison of the analysis results and the measured results in the field. When the analytical results is compared with the actual structural behavior, there is a little difference, but it is thought that the analysis results are quite reliable because it is very similar to the measured values in spite of construction and measurement errors.

  • The behavior of earth retention wall installed in cut slope is different from the behavior of retention wall applied in urban excavation. In order to establish the design method of anchored retention walls in cut slope, the behavior of anchored retention wall can be investigated and checked in detail. In this study, the behavior of anchored retention wall was investigated by instrumentation installed in cut slope for an apartment construction stabilized by a row of piles. The horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall was larger than the displacement of slope soil behind the wall at the early stage of excavation. As the excavation depth became deeper, the horizontal displacement of slope soil was larger than the displacement of anchored retention wall. It means that the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall due to excavation is restrained by soldier pile stiffness and jacking force of anchor. Jacking force of anchor was mainly influenced in the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall. The displacements of anchored retention wall and slope soil were affected mainly by an rainfall infiltrated from the ground surface. Meanwhile, the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall with slope backside was about 2-6 times larger than the displacement of anchored retention wall with horizontal backside of excavation.

  • Pretension PSC (Prestressed Concrete) members are subjected to a certain limit of size as they are generally produced in the off-site plant and transferred to the site due to the large scale of the product on system. In this study, a portable pretensioning production system has been developed, which allow us to apply the pretension method on site. Considering that a 50m span PSC girder using the pretension method requires a pressing device to endure a large jacking force, the portable pretension production system has to ensure safety against such a large pretension jacking force. In this study, the portable pretensioning system to produce a 50m span pretension girder was manufactured by using CFT (Concrete Filled steel Tube) members. In order to understand the stability of the system and the behavior of the elements, a static loading test was conducted and the stability of the proposed portable pretensioning production system was confirmed. The developed portable pretension system was applied to several construction sites and was investigated the problems on site. During the pretension girder and slab members that was producted by this pretension system in construction site, it has be found the several advantages such as simple fabrication processes, reduction of prestress-loss, and a decrease of 15% compared with the fabrcation cost of post-tension girder. After due consideration of the problems, this portable pretension system will be improved.

  • Friction coefficients of the prestressing tendon are the basic information required to control the prestressing force introduced to PSC structure during jacking. However, the friction coefficients show considerable differences depending on the specifications, causing much confusion to designers. In this study, the ranges of the friction coefficients presented in domestic and foreign specifications are compared together to clarify the differences. Then, a procedure is proposed that can be used to estimate the wobble and curvature friction coefficients from field data such as elongation and prestressing force and from theory related to the friction. The procedure is applied to various tendon profiles of several PSC bridges constructed by ILM, FCM and MSS. The resulting values are compared with those presented in some specifications and assumed in jacking and a reasonable range of the friction coefficient is discussed. Lift-off tests are also performed in some bridges to further verify the results. The resulting wobble friction coefficients are not as small as those presented in AASHTO specifications but range from the lower limit to mid point of domestic specifications, while the curvature friction coefficients approach or slightly exceed the upper limit.

  • In this paper, an EM sensing based prestressing force estimation method is proposed, in which it can estimate tensile force of PS tendon for PSC girder. The PSC girder has more improved performance than the general concrete girder by introducing the prestressing to the concrete. Thus the PSC girder bridge is widely constructed due to its high performance and low cost. However, the prestressing force has not been managed nevertheless it is major factor for the maintenance of the PSC girder bridge. The prestressing force was just measured during construction using jacking device and after that, it can not be managed. For this reason, this paper proposes a tensile force estimation method of PS tendon based on EM sensor. The permeability of ferroelectric material is changed according to the induced stress to the material, in which it can be measured using EM sensor. To measure the permeability of PS tendon, the EM sensor was fabricated and verified by performing the MTS test. The test was performed using 7-wire steel tendon under the 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 KN of tensile force. The permeability of PS tendon was gradually decreased according to the increasement of tensile force. The regression method was used to find the relation between permeability and stress. As a result, the permeability has linear relation with the tensile force of PS tendon and the pre-stressing force can be estimated by the derived estimation equation.

  • In the preliminary design stage of Prestressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder Bridges, the design factors(including depth, thickness of web, and jacking force) decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect the final design factors. So there is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To aim at an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design program has been developed by using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME(PSC Bridge analysis program) in these studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design factors by introducing the optimal design techniques of PSC box girder bridge design. The objective function for optimal design is material cost of box girder and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The optimal design techniques used the Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) with performing the optimal design program. In this study, We designed unprismatic section bridge and prismatic section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design program developed in this study. By analyzing the results we suggested the practical form of tendon's layout comparing the optimal desingns on the basis of each tendon's layout.

  • This paper presents a closing method for a cable-stayed bridge erected by the free cantilever method to produce the initial equilibrium configuration at the final construction stage. To realize the initial equilibrium condition in cable-stayed bridge by the cantilever method, compatibility conditions for vertical displacements, rotational angles, and axial displacements at the closing section of both side girders should be satisfied. In this paper, it was shown that it can be accomplished by using some applicable loads during construction such as the pull-up force of the derrick crane, some cable tension forces, and jacking force at the pylon. The proposed method was applied to a construction stage analysis of a sample bridge to demonstrate its validity, and it was acknowledged that the tower was considerably affected by the compatibility condition for axial displacement in the closing step.
