  • The dependences of microscopic magnetic domain on film thickness in unidirectional and isotropic exchange-coupled NiO/NiFe bilayers were investigated by magnetic force microscopy to better understand for exchange biasing. As NiO thickness increases, microscopic domain structure of unidirectional biased film changed to smaller and more complicated domains. However, for isotropic-coupled film a new cross type domain appeared with out-of plane magnetization orientation. The density of the cross domain is proportional to exchange biasing fields and the fact that the domain was originated by the strongest exchange coupling region was confirmed from the dynamic domain configuration during a magnetization cycle.

  • A penalized VIC method offers an efficient hybrid particle-mesh algorithm to simulate an incompressible viscous flow passing a solid body in an infinite domain. In this manner, the computational domain needs to be restricted to a relatively small region to reduce computational cost which would be very high in case of using a large domain. In this paper, we present how to dispose of far-field particles to avoid an unnecessarily large computational domain. The present approach constraints expansion of the domain and thus prevents the incremental computational cost. To validate the numerical approach, a flow around an impulsively started sphere was simulated for Reynolds numbers of 100 and 1000.

  • Background: Fc receptor-mediated phagocytosis is a complex process involving the activation of kinases and phosphatases. FcgammaRIIB has been known to transduces inhibitory signals through an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) in cytoplasmic domains. In this study, we examined the involvement of inositol-phosphatase in the Fc receptor-mediated phagocytosis. Methods: J774 cells were infected using vaccinia viral vector containing SH2 domain-containing inositol-phosphatase (SHIP) cDNA and stimulated with the sensitized sheep red blood cells. Results: Stimulation of J774 cells induced the tyrosine phosphorylation of SHIP which was maximal at 5 minutes. Phosphatidylinositol-3 (PI-3) kinase inhibitor (wortmannin) inhibits J774 cell phagocytosis of sensitized sheep red blood cells in a dose-dependent manner. Heterologious expression of SHIP in J774 cells inhibits phagocytosis of sensitized sheep red blood cells in a dose-dependency manner, but catalytically dead mutants of SHIP has no effect on phagocytosis. Conclusion: These results strongly suggest that the active signals mediated by PI-3 kinase are opposed by inhibitory signals through SHIP in the regulation of Fc receptor-mediated phagocytosis.

  • The dependence on nickel oxide thickness and a ferromagnetic layer thickness in unidirectional and isotropic exchange-coupled NiO/NiFe(Fe) bilayer films was investigated by magnetic force microscopy to better understand the relation between magnetic domain structure and exchange biasing at microscopic length scales. As the NiO thickness increased, the domain structure of unidirectional biased films formed smaller and more complex in-plane domains. By contrast, for the isotropically coupled films, large domains generally formed with increasing NiO thickness including a cross type domain with out-of plane magnetization orientation. The density of the cross domain is proportional to exchange biasing field, and the fact that the domain mainly originated from the strongest exchange coupled region was confirmed by imaging in an applied external field during a magnetization cycle.

  • Thickness-dependent magnetic domain structure of ultrathin Co wedge films (0.3 nm-1.0 nm) sandwiched by Pt layers was investigated by scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) employing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), utilizing elliptically polarized soft x-rays and electromagnetic fields, with a spatial resolution of 50 nm. The magnetic domain images measured at the Co $L_3$ edge showed the evolution of the magnetic domain structures from maze-like form to the bubble-like form as the perpendicular magnetic field was applied. The asymmetric domain expansion of a 500 nm-scale bubble domain was also measured when the in-plane and perpendicular external magnetic field were applied simultaneously.

  • Let Cl(A) denote the class group of an arbitrary integral domain A introduced by Bouvier in 1982. Then Cl(A) is the ideal class (resp., divisor class) group of A if A is a Dedekind or a Prüfer (resp., Krull) domain. Let G be an abelian group. In this paper, we show that there is a ring of Krull type D such that Cl(D) = G but D is not a Krull domain. We then use this ring to construct a Prüfer ring of Krull type E such that Cl(E) = G but E is not a Dedekind domain. This is a generalization of Claborn's result that every abelian group is the ideal class group of a Dedekind domain.

  • Species-specific polymorphisms in chicken, pheasant, turkey, and quail were identified by cloning and sequencing of the immunoglobulin constant domain (IgLC). A set of species-specific primers were then designed on the basis of polymorphisms in the IgLC between species, as well as two additional sets of primers for the cytochrome b and tapasin genes, for the purpose of species identification. Together, the primers successfully distinguished specific species from chicken by species-specific PCR. This simple but unambiguous method may be used to screen avian inter-species germline chimeras, which are valuable models for the conservation of endangered species.
